Do you think Edgar Wright changed up his style in this film to show he can do work outside of his own Cornetto style work? I wonder if he wants to tackle some bigger properties but needs to convince people that he can do something different.
I liked the ending, which is about taking justice into your own hands when no one is there for you. It’s about being pushed to the limits when there’s no escape. And it makes you question who the antagonist really is and who to feel sympathy for. Real life is rarely black and white and the third act of the film understands that.

I'm always down for some Anya Taylor-Joy. I knew she was special since The Witch. That movie has a lot of issues imo, but she stood out. And then Split, where she was also pretty good. And oh, I remember now that another movie I saw with her was Morgan. It's worth seeing for her alone, cuz the way she looks there and the way she carries herself is striking. So I'm looking forward to this, and I hope her star continues to rise.
I just watched it. I'm super curious which part of the ending you didn't like. I think the ending could be split into 3 parts. I would love to know when you started to hate it. Are we talking the epiphany moment followed by the main character's empathy and understanding, final confrontation or where the characters reconvene and seemingly reconcile?
Maybe it was the very last shot of the two main characters finally interacting with each other and one, or maybe both, finally finding peace (not to spoil anything).
I've been really looking forward to this movie, and I'm glad to hear that it ended up pretty good! Can't wait to see it. Also - Anya Taylor-Joy as Mystique would be AMAZING!
I am old enough to remember London back in the day. It was mostly white, even the working class. I would say like 95% white. So the movie doesn’t white wash. The big changes in the population came almost 20 years later.
i probably wont watch it in theatres but i am curious to watch it nonetheless so i will look out for it when it hits one of the streaming services in the fututre...
I think Malignant was trying to more specifically capture the over the top absurdity of Argento's horror movies. Whereas this film better captures the more classier, earlier films of this Italian genre.
Ehh Argento has never made a film like malignant, that movie has more in common with John wick meets basketcase than deep red. Last night is closer but the ghost effects go way too big, if they just stuck with the mystery and added some kills then I would say yes this is the kind of tale you could see in a Giallo in a modern feminist sort of revisionist take on the genre it's closer certainly but does feel like a goosebumps version. Edgar Wright just doesn't have the edge to do a straight faced horror film it's a little too twee for my taste. The twist btw is the most giallo thing about it.
I think directing is more than camera movement. Personally I think this is Edgar Wright’s best movie or at least up there. What he did here was truly impressive at least to me.
Just watched.... And still processing (2 hrs in)... I can see why you'd hate the ending. Felt like a fudge a little... But I appreciate the message, the vision and the story. A very good movie. One thing that did bug me in your review was about EW not having his stamp on this movie. He has a range of styles. P.s. that cab scene....! Grrrr
Wait was Anya Taylor Joy listening to Beats headphones in this film or was that a clip from another movie? Wasn't this film taking place in older times?
OMG YES I saw it last night at the premiere and I absolutely loved it ❤️ 💚 Such a gorgeous film ❤️ I've mostly seen it for Anya but loved Thomasin as well and now I wanna see her in more films
Monday is a day off in Poland and I think I just made my plans for that day :) Wasn't planning to see it in the cinema because I was afraid that it was really scary (I hate horror movies - especially jump scares) but I'm sold now!
I am always up for directors changing their signatures as long as their able to pull it off. Sometimes it’s makes directors stronger to try genres they aren’t known for as long as they land the ending.
Hated the end of the movie? It sounds like you didn't get the end of the movie. The movie was making a distinction between 2nd wave and 3rd wave feminism. Maybe a nuanced take like that, you didn't catch... but those are two different ideologies in conflict in this film. It's throughout the whole movie. It's not another tired women good vs men bad movie. It's second wave vs third wave feminism. Try looking at the film again through that prism and you may be surprised at how it brings clarity to the film (including the ending).
Having finished watching it, i agree it doesnt give me scary horror vibes but maybe more of a psychological thriller? Ending was okay. I appreciate what they were trying to do but i feel like they could've cut some of it out.
I’m surprised I didn’t figure it out. Seems very obvious. I’m just sitting there figuring out who is who and I didn’t include Sandy being the one old lady in the film….and it seems most didn’t figure it out.
@@leonardogabrieltrevinoloba2377 it’s not a crap movie, on a technical level it’s incredible, an amazing soundtrack amazing cinematography and visual design and costumes and sets and acting…the script is just trash. Loads of setups with no payoffs, a tone deaf and DUMB twist, paper thin character, 45 mins of padding with the same scene redone over and over and over again with no new information.
For me it was The Queen's Gambit that I fell in love with her.
The Witch has issues?
Literally been waiting ALL week for this!
You know Grace there was probably like 2 black people in all of Soho back then. Stop trying to blackwash history.
I am old enough to remember London back in the day. It was mostly white, even the working class. I would say like 95% white. So the movie doesn’t white wash. The big changes in the population came almost 20 years later.
i love when grace brings up that tyra banks quote
SPOILERS:
Did you not like the ending because it turns out a woman is a killer? I really hope not because that would be dumb if you did.
I say it's either that or the fact it's a happy ending
i probably wont watch it in theatres but i am curious to watch it nonetheless so i will look out for it when it hits one of the streaming services in the fututre...
Your review hyped me a lot! Definetly going to watch it when it arrives here to Argentina on November 18th.
I just came out of the cinema, yeah Grace. I hated the end of the movie SO much!
It was a perfect twist I’d say. I think we all just didn’t want Anya to be the “villain” so I get it lol
Grace I would’ve figured you already knew about giallo.. but it’s great that you found this mew genre lol
I think directing is more than camera movement. Personally I think this is Edgar Wright’s best movie or at least up there. What he did here was truly impressive at least to me.
Grace any tea coming up to Disney + day?
Saw in the theatre yesterday loved it. The costumes the music the acting
Grrrr
ok, can not take any more with her white guilt
The end of Last Night In soho seemed like an episode of Scooby-Doo or the twilight zone lol
Anya Taylor Joy for Princess Irulan in Dune Part 2
Do it.
What's the movie about
I, too, hated the ending. Time to go watch this again!
Do you have a spolier review video?
I was already a fan of Thomasin after her role in JOJO rabbit and her brief cameo in the King. So glad to see her in a big film getting great reviews!
Wait was Anya Taylor Joy listening to Beats headphones in this film or was that a clip from another movie? Wasn't this film taking place in older times?
Thomasin McKenzie is a treat!
Watch out for Thomasin she’s gonna be big in the future
No strong camera work? Did we watch the same movie?
What's going on with "The Chain" that other Edgar Wright flick?
OMG YES
I saw it last night at the premiere and I absolutely loved it ❤️ 💚
Such a gorgeous film ❤️
I've mostly seen it for Anya but loved Thomasin as well and now I wanna see her in more films
i agree a little bit about the ending
lol already forgot about malignant
Ayeee wanna hear why I didn't like this movie? Check out my review!!
Just finished the movie an hour at the theater it was amazing Last night in soho 🔥🔥💯
You should check out Argento's 'Profondo Rosso' or 'The Bird with the Crystal Plumage' Grace, you will love them!
Wanted to see it on the big screen but its not getting released here
The ending of the movie really fucks up the whole experience. But it’s enjoyable until the last 45 minutes
Blood and Black Lace is available on RUclips... a nice print, with English Subtitles.
Having finished watching it, i agree it doesnt give me scary horror vibes but maybe more of a psychological thriller? Ending was okay. I appreciate what they were trying to do but i feel like they could've cut some of it out.
Movie does what 8t needs to do , no representation needed anywhere .
I saw the ending coming a mile away I'm surprised it took people off guard.
I’m surprised I didn’t figure it out. Seems very obvious. I’m just sitting there figuring out who is who and I didn’t include Sandy being the one old lady in the film….and it seems most didn’t figure it out.
I will see anything Matt smith is in
I HATED it, so incredibly well made for such a crap story
How is this a crap movie?
@@leonardogabrieltrevinoloba2377 it’s not a crap movie, on a technical level it’s incredible, an amazing soundtrack amazing cinematography and visual design and costumes and sets and acting…the script is just trash. It felt like he wanted the concept of a girl dreaming of the 60’s and then the story was an after thought. Loads of setups with no payoffs, a tone deaf and DUMB twist, paper thin character, 45 mins of padding with the same scene redone over and over and over again with no new information. The story has soooo many problems, but everything else is awesome
I just rewatched "the VVitch" and not only is ATJ an amazing actress, but her character's name is Thomasin, and in this movie, her co-star is also named Thomasin... ! What are the odds...?
Fantastic movie.
It's about white women... why do women of color need to be included in the discussion?
The BBC Radio 3 one hour long programme today took its cue from this film and returned to 1966 to play music from a number of key films from that year, including 'Dracula Prince of Darkness', 'Farenheit 451', and 'A Man For All Seasons'.
I needed this. Greetings from México.
WAIT! Anya would be an amazing MYSTIQUE!! OH MY GOD!! I loved her as Magik but Mystique also makes sense.
Anya Taylor Joy is truly a star in the making, she’s amazing
Love the review ❤️❤️❤️
have you seen The Scary of Sixty First?
Anya Taylor-Joy and Thomasin McKenzie was amazing in soho and Karlsen🔥🔥
I absolutely loved this movie. It had my attention from the get. Favorite of the year👏👏👏
I loved this movie.
I like that Grace covers films in general. I do get kinda sick of superhero movies or those big franchise stuff like Star Wars. It can be a little too redundant. Most of my favorite movies don't come from big franchises.
I have only seen one edgar wright film(Baby driver). It was great. Maybe this tonight I will watch Scott pilgrim.
