I got a very inspirational idea for using the Hero Clicks/Mage Knight bases. If you take coffee stirrer sticks and glue them to either side of those bases, then cut them to match the circle and finally take a piece of cardstock the width of the sticks and base, glue the cardstock to the edge and you get an old style wagon wheel! I know others use round wooden pieces from the Woodies packages to make the wheel base, but the size of the Mage Knight bases is just about right for a wagon wheel. I'm going to try and get a tutorial done once I finish reorganizing my craft area and post it.
Hey, what a great idea. Wife and I have over a thousand Mage Knight figures, many of which (the spares) we convert and use for our D&D games. I`d have never thought about the wagon wheels.. what an inspired idea. Thanks for that. I need a few wagons as it happens: and I`d much prefer to make my own than buy them :-)
hello my father and his friends have been playing D&D for years and I have received a ton of mage knight minis like bags of them but two of my favorite are a hill giant and a dragon do you know where to buy bigger bases so I can convert them. Thanks for your time and love the video.
I wish i had tons of mageknight minis... for giants, dragons and more classic monsters it may be easier to look for toy sets ( and then convert the figures to miniatures). Of course there is always ebay- tons of dragon miniatures of various sizes. for giants- One thing you can also do is find large sized figures ( super heroes-think thor, hulk and such). paint them black then dry brush in skin tone or such. It will make them look like a giant sized mini. Then find a large base to glue them on.
omg gust had a quick look on ebay for single miniatures (new or replacements) and yer they do cost like 2-3 pounds-uk/dollars-us but like 10 -12 pounds-uk/dollars-us to ship... i'm not going to buy something that costs 4-5 times more to ship than the actual item itself. cos i'm thinking about getting back into this game and thinking about making some bits and pieces like houses but with moving bits hidden leds for any fireplaces for the lighting effects and seeing if i could get a small model smoke machine in for the chimneys. obviously i would only make one or two like this but still in order to do this i would knead a human dnd miniature to scale the buildings to the miniature but at these prices no way...
yeah the price of minis has gotten a little high... see if you can find dead games like mageknight, horrorclix - you can sometimes pick those minis up really cheap
You can pick them up in lots on ebay.. or check out the facebook group for sell/trade of rpg items= link is in video description ( i picked up a huge lot not long ago for under 10 cents each)
Fascinating idea here. Do you think the quality compares to bought miniatures? I am alway concerned that my attempts will end up being sub-par to a purchased version. Thanks for posting.
you can easily paint better than the D&D pre painted minis... most of those paint jobs are horrible. they have little to no fine detail and normally no was or highlight. and best of all if you have 3 of the same mini you can change color of certain features or clothes so the dont look identical...
I'm new to this and I notice when you're talking about price there is a dramatic swing. Can you still get minis at a low cost from a lot of these different sets and games? I know things overall are more expensive now and I don't want to waste money unnecessarily. I'm just starting out and only have five pre-painted wow figures so far.
How about just 3d print them? Using an Ender 3, ABS transparent filament (highest detail) and a 0.25mm nozzle with 0.04mm layer height, you end up with something identical to extruded plastic.
I also Vapor Smooth the ABS, so the layer lines fuse and disappear. I find that it is Way cheaper than resin. Lots of potential there. Self sufficiency is the ultimate Wealth - Diasophenies
if searching ebay- search ( mageknight, miniatures 28mm, also make sure to use the word- Lot) the larger lots normally go for a bit cheaper per mini.. you can also search for heroclix, horror clix and dreamblade minis
Dungeonmaster Mark Yeah... I wrote the comment as I was still watching the video. then you mentioned the Facebook group and I felt dumb. just joined the group. hope to find some cool stuff.
Dungeonmaster Mark very nice group. I saw someone sold over 300 mage knight minis for 75 dollars a few months ago and I almost cried I didn't get that deal. other than that one. the rest don't seem much greater than what you can find on ebay. I'll keep my eyes open.
Hey man, I don't know if you got my message, but for some reason it doesn't allow me to gain access to that facebook group anymore. Do you think you could get me back in, or do you know a reason why I can't join?
3x5 cards, coloured pencils, scissors, glue... look up "cardboard heroes"by SJG for how to assemble them. you get 3d/2d (2.5d?) with plenty of colour in them, a front and a back so you can tell facing direction, and have loads of fun colouring things and making stuff up... if you wanna get fancy use a penny to weigh them down.. but i think they are cool, and way cheaper than mini's. i mean dollar store has all you need to create anything for probably 3 bucks.. scotch tape, scissors, coloured pencils, and index cards... now you have a 4 dollar army of goblins :)
i picked up 200 of them on the facebook group ...in the description there is a link. they came to about 10 cents each..sometimes you can pick them up on ebay cheap also
Hey i was about to request to join the facebook group but i read the description and it said you pay via paypal. But can i use visa? I'm still learning about paying for stuff through cards haha sorry
Paypal is pretty common online payment method. ( you can add funds to paypal with a credit card and bank funds) .. on facebook you can also use a credit card using facebook payments - I've used it a few times... hope that helps
This just a guide on how to cannibalize minis from other games and change the bases. Not on how to make custom minis at all. And he takes 9 minutes of a 13 minute video to get to the point. Waste of time video.
The clear bases are a stroke of inspiration, especially when using printed play tiles or mats.
yeah - I am really considering getting tons of them and re-basing all of my minis....
Thanks for the tips, Mark! I am so pumped to save up for some of these plans. So great!
you are welcome

ive done it before.. it makes a very nice wood pattern...
that is a great idea!

Also pretty easy to make your own bases out of Polymer clay.

How do I add weapons to heroclix that have empty hands?
easiest way is with a drop of superglue. ( my son made a few where he added spears " toothpicks"..then painted tips to simulate metal spear tip)
what size are the bases you are gluing them back on to?
i use a 28mm base ( approx 1 inch)
Thank you
Cool, but you didnt make them. You bought or sourced them. Probably why your ratio looks like that.
you should google the definition of make.. ( if you mod or put together from parts ) - that is by definition making something !
How about just 3d print them? Using an Ender 3, ABS transparent filament (highest detail) and a 0.25mm nozzle with 0.04mm layer height, you end up with something identical to extruded plastic.
not quite as google as detail sadly... I have a resin printer i am working with currently that is almost on par..... the tech is almost there...soon

My girl is trying to find a Rabbit-Folk Usagi for PF any ideas?
Budget is a little low.

Are pathfinder minis the right size for d&d?
yes... Pathfinder is based off D&D .. so it uses same size minis..and most of the rules are the same also.
where is the link to the facebook page
it just got updated at bottom in video description
thank you

maybe... but i want actual minis... not a army of paper. Heck paizo sells nice monster tokens if just going for cheap and paper
I plan to do this with heroclix.
hero clix work well ... so do horror clix if you can find them
I used Loki from marvel as a changeling because, why not.
@@ninchia - Actually i can see loki as a changeling really well
Wow, were those minis really that Cheap! Were did you buy them?

+Dungeonmaster Mark I got another question. Can I paint minis with normal paint and brush ? Can I still add textures and detail that way?
you can use any acrylic craft paint ... you could also use green stuff or acrylic gell to add textures.
would you mind doing a video about paizo's new Starfinder game?
i can do that this weekend...there isnt a whole lot of info yet..but i can share what has been released
+Dungeonmaster Mark Thanks! I'm interested in your thoughts on it.

MANTICORE, MANTICORE, MANTICORE, MANTICORE
Manticores are awesome
Dungeonmaster Mark I know, right. I always use them in my campains. They're right up ther with the owlbear for me
i love owlbears... the best is when the party find a egg and doenst know what it is.. and then momma owlbear tracks them down
Dungeonmaster Mark that's such a good idea. Owlbears are so cool. I do that a lot too ^-^
that thumb got smasshhheed
GWOTvetx4 acid actually..damaged the nail plate
Did it heal up?

wow you are an idiot.. if you cannibalize a mini to make something new = then you are making something custom...
I’m kind of on his side... I was misled into thinking this was a tutorial on sculpting minis.
