  • It’s all too easy to walk past a painting in a gallery without noticing that there’s more than meets the eye. In this talk, Mary invites you to contemplate how Roman emperors are portrayed in 19th century art and demonstrate that these images are edgier and more interesting than we sometimes imagine, raising issues of power, corruption, race and more…

Mary Beard doesn't disappoint! I love learning from her and her knowledge about Roman anecdotes is so engaging. The Bordonc painting alone gives a really interesting artificial transition between the pagan and Christian world. Art like this is so cool for what is allows us to learn about human nature!
