  • So I've used this method a few times probably 25 times actually to jump start my truck which is a V8 with a completely dead battery and also my wife's car who has a bad battery so her battery is always dead just a nice little trick to get you out of a pinch

Hi, this video could have possibly saved my life. This might be a bit of an exaggeration as I would have survived 1 way or another but I was in a remote part of Australia with no phone reception for 100kms, to get out of this nature reserve for help would have been a 11hr walk (all flat ground). I brought by DeWalt torch & 5AH battery with me for the camp and just before I left, subconsciously I grabbed a bundle of thin cable, didn't know why I just grabbed it. Anyway, got back to my car and I accidentally left my lights for half the day, my battery was FLAT. Anyway used the thin cable, jammed it into the battery terminal, stripped a large amount and bolted onto terminals burning my hand in the process, started the car and it started instantly! If it wasn't for this video I would of had to do the huge walk to the main road in 35 degree C weather.

I didn't know what I was going to do. I don't know what I expected to find on RUclips but I didn't have any other options. I drive with a decent tool collection that includes a DeWalt drill, yes with the smallest battery. I had speaker wire. Armed with that and this video I felt... Hopeless, and swore I'd never tell anyone that I fell for this lol.. I connected it, got in my car and turned the key.. I couldn't stop laughing it was AWESOME! When I first clicked to watch this I rolled my eyes to myself because I figure most people would cut the video and charge the battery to make it look like it worked. I have to try this tonight. The largest battery I have is 4AH, but if the battery's discharge rating is the same it should work quickly for me like it did for you.

  • @ytTaz480

My educated guess why it didnt work the first 2 times was because it wasnt a good connection(battery level meter 3 bars). As soon as a good connection was made, the voltage of the 20v and the dead car battery(guessing maybe 10 volts+/-) was reliably combined in parallel thus giving the battery level indicator a reading in the low to mid teens(+/-) which is why it suddenly read 1 bar. Thats why it finally started. The 3rd attempt was a more reliable connection.

This is great I already have to make this. I think I'm going to use a little beefier wire just to deliver the goods a little better. One thing I would suggest is if your cables are long enough set the DeWalt battery on the ground so that if it goes up in flames, your car doesn't get torched. If the cables are too short it would still help to set the DeWalt battery on the fender so that if it goes up in flames you can at least knock it off onto the ground. I know the odds are against that happening but these are Lithium-ion batteries were talking about so it definitely can happen. And I'm not saying don't do it I'm just saying put the battery where you can knock it on to the ground if something happens.
Also as far as those little connectors I tested some of the round ones that have a hole in the middle and they fit in there and give a fantastic connection. So if you have those give them a try. It's the type of connectors that are made where you attach a wire to it and it allows you to bolt the connector onto something. I think those do give a little more of a contact point.

  • @AlexAvet53
    @AlexAvet53 2 года назад +7

It works because it takes time for large 12v car battery cells to pass power from 20v small battery cells. Car battery simply gets charged and that is why it took him 3rd time to jump start. If you live them connected for longer time then it might damage electronics but less likely because difference in cell capacity is huge and probably car battery won’t reach over 15v which is ok because that is about what it gets from alternator. However one needs to be careful because damage can be really costly.

I found this out years ago and Yes it works!! I was stranded middle of winter with no one around for a jump. I took my 18V Dewalt NiCd battery and found the positive and negative. I took some 10 gauge stranded house wire (I'm an electrician) to get plenty of cranking Amps. Made my connections - it started right up! I closed my car doors, turned everything off (AC, radio, interior lights, headlights/park lights...) so the battery/starter can get full power. It worked!! I've boosted off a few other people in a jamb without using cables and they were AMAZED at how it did it!
In Extremely cold temp. this may not work. In this case, I Double up on jumper cables and connected in parallel to Increase the Power, more Amps. 2 Pairs of jumper cables connected the same way (the positives connected to positive and with negatives connected to negative.
I'm Not endorsing Anyone or Advising anyone to try this. Using jumper cables is the best and safest way to boost off your car. And always look away (or wear safety glasses) when making the connection. GREAT VIDEO!!

that's cool. great idea in a pinch, I was just stuck for over two hours due to accidentally leaving my lights on. I do not think a drill battery would get my truck going just due to its size and the cranking amps required but I bet a couple of these in parallel would do the trick. a jumpstarter is like 80 bucks though and my drill batterys are over 100 each so id probably rather just get a jumpstarter to keep on hand just in case. I love the idea of something that can be used for multiple purposes though!!! I always have drill batterys around maybe ill build an apparatus that they can plug into and safely do this without risking the drill battery!!! million dollar idea!!

please consider this: a jumpstarter has a cable with protections, like a relay and 30sec timer included, or some large diodes. The diodes protect it if user connect battery leads the wrong way. With a drill battery you lack these safety features. If a drill battery catches fire on top of your car, how do you estinguish fire? Liion burns at very high temps, you need sand to stop the fire. It's very risky and easy to make mistake of connecting wrong way the wires. Even a short between leads can damage drill battery. Your bet is on internal protection in each battery cell, assuming there is any.
A jumpstarter does not charge car battery, it just sustains the initial high current draw while keeping voltage from dropping too low. Thus, the jumpstarter needs the car battery to have some juice left, they work together. I assume that if you start car with jumpstarter a few times, car battery level will drop lower, to a point where it won't start at all, even with jumpstarter attached.
The drill battery actually charges the car battery, getting the voltage a little higher, to a point where it can start the car. This should work if the car battery is not very deply discharged.
This is why you need to wait some time, to get it charged a bit. A car battery has high capacity, e.g. 70Ah at 12V, but it may no longer start car if it's at 65% charge. If you can get it to 75% charge, it starts car.

Buy yourself a diode to inline it into your wire so you won’t get the back feed from your alternator next time.

I had this Idea today. walking a few blocks home. sure enough youtube. it’s been done. I’ve always hooked up negative positive bla bla. to battery. I’ve read manuals on this. I know what it says. I follow the order of connections but have never had good results going to frame. Is this simply mostly as a precaution. And is it the distance from the battery- that radiates the energy of the connection out instead of directly on the terminal?
    Just like welding?

Great video. If you put the Dewalt - end on a ground source you wouldn't have to worry about back charing your battery at that insane amperage.

Awesome trick. I think if Use smaller gauge wires and make them shorter . It will work a bit faster

    Attention, do not imitate !!!!!
    Too high currents are flowing!
There is a risk of fire and / or explosion!
A 1 ohm 400 watt resistor limits the current to 20 amps.
protect your health and your life!

I think the cables are trash or the connection isn’t good mine always dropped down to one bar when I hook up to a battery so your reading full bars on a dead battery is the problem I’m thinking

Yes you can jump start your car with lithium batterys, I should know I've done this, I used a 18volt 5ah hitachi cordless battery and it spun it over with ease, but what no one tells you, it killed part of the battery and after trying to revive these battery cells I had to renew them, I'm lucky because I know how to do them and trust me I won't be doing this again thanks colin

Figured this out with a sears battery in 1998. I have to do this now my cr-v has a dead battery. I needed to see if a 20v lithium was safe. Thank you.
