Things as in Cars, beautiful clothes, furniture and on and on. We don’t need to own so many cheaply made items, rather a few quality items that are repairable and worth keeping.
If you don't want to own so many cheaply made things, then don't buy them. But we don't need to force consumers to "only buy expensively-made products".
Our culture needs to turn the corner. We are in late term capitalism where the majority of the wealth has accumulated to the small minority. Jeff Bazos saw that our society is driven by materialism, His business model simple: provide customer products at the lowest market rate, put all profits back into company, expand and rinse and repeat until you put all of your competitors out of business. Boom 15 years later largest retailer. Now mind you Bazos started this in mid 90s, he saw the beginning of internet retail space and the beginning of Clinton's China trade act which has driven production and retailers in the US to vanish. Who is to blame? We get the politicians and leaders we deserve. Niche was right over 150 years ago in the beginning of the industrial age when he said God is dead. Lol speaking about protectionism not working yet you referenced Reagan forcing Japanese auto markers being forced to build cars here. That move created hundreds of thousands of jobs for decades and provided billions in tax revenue. I think it’s clear that trade needs to be to the best of the countries involved in it.
It already is the best, otherwise consumers wouldn't be engaging in the trade to begin with. Trade always makes both parties better off, otherwise the parties wouldn't be engaging in the trade.
Man, that was ages ago. Now manufacturing/producing everything in the USA would be, and is, hyper expensive. No companies could support that, and consumers would not consume anything that comes from the USA, and instead would buy products from competitive countries that share trade and production in a global sense. Even Trump totally knows that, but he just say what people with no education want to hear to get votes and power. And in America people with no education is the huge majority... that's why Trump does that. Actually that's the main reason why American politicians keep American population so un-educated.
Vance's back story and path to the role of VP is utterly inspiring, the absolute encapsulation of the American Dream. It has long been my belief that anyone who wants to be a politician should be immediately barred from ever being one, it is refreshing to see a reluctant politician called to high office by another reluctant politician. Those voices USED to speak for the RNC, but when the DNC became the party of large corporations and told a good percentage of their blue collar voters that they were deplorables, right at the same time Trump came on the scene, there was a huge shift in the voters. There's a big difference between "Globalism" and "Internationalism". Globalism wants to unite all nations into a central authority that directs the actions of increasingly unimportant national governments.
It was good of Freddie to interview a friend of the great JD Vance, which I didn’t really expect he would do. Even when he does this though, he just can’t keep his disdain for Trump allies down. That is why he superselectively chooses a quote from JD about how he doesn’t really care about Ukraine, even though that doesn’t fairly represent his views about Ukrainians. In his 2023 speech on foreign policy: ruclips.net/video/TTVVtEwbzXg/видео.html JD speaks about how he admires the bravery and courage of Ukrainian troops, as virtually everyone does. At the same time, he condemns the corruption of the Ukrainian government and bureaucracy, which he calls, with some exaggeration perhaps, the most corrupt in Europe. (The perceptions of corruption index published by Transparency International indicates that Ukraine to be a less corrupt country than Russia.) Freddie just ignores the almost unanswerable argument that JD makes that the US government is trying to help Ukraine win an unwinnable war, or at least pretending it wants to help them win that war. All credit to JD for seeing things as they are, when so many other prominent Americans are addicted to Hopium.
He could not put it better w.r.t. Ukraine: ' Ok,.what is the plan? ' Is there a plan at all? What a good in their for Ukraine? What is the USA priority? USA has pushed Russia to China with the lack of diplomacy.

I’m sure that some NATO warmonger nutcases like Lindsay Graham weren’t happy with the pick, but one of the other people Trump was considering for VP, the governor of North Dakota, had only good things to say about JD after the announcement was made. This Cass guy is right about one thing: it’s a myth that the right has ever been the champion of free markets. If you don’t realize that the key word in free markets is “free” (not under the control or in the power of another) and that the opposite of free is slave, that’s understandable. These are pretty abstract concepts that take a lot of thought to fully understand (it took the founders years to understand, articulate, and form a government built on them). But until you understand freedom, until you fully embrace freedom, until you advocate for freedom, and until you support politicians who fight for freedom, don’t call yourself an American patriot. Instead, be honest and call yourself what you are: an authoritarian (of, relating to, or favoring blind submission to authority).

I've long thought that myself, that social conservatism is actually much more closely aligned with economic policies which have a larger role for the state, than liberalism is with economic libertarianism. People tend to drift towards social conservatism when they are feeling economically insecure but they will miss their freedoms when they're taken away, and then they'll be wanting to pelt him with rancid tomatoes. What people actually want is economic security and the freedom to make their own choices at the same time - is that really such a big ask ?
Yes I support free choices across the board but what conservative free choices would you be referring to, out of interest ? What do I mean by security ? Well, everyone having secure accommodation as an absolute bare minimum for starters which would require intervention/regulation of the market and the undermining of landlords profits. Otherwise, collapsing birthrate. Economic security is a standard of living which meets everyone's human need for shelter, food, healthcare and low crime. Neoliberalism only really secures these for the top half of the population.
This is quite refreshing and debunks this idea that conservativism equals unrestrained free market capitalism. Traditional conservativism stands up for the worker, the family, the community. The free market cares little for them, the individual is merely a commodity.

Buchanan was definitely ahead of his time. We should stop all of these trade deals and starting making everything domestically instead...like the North Koreans do.
Fellow you saying what my finance professor said way back in the 1960s...you and he are 100% wrong because trade is NOT a level playing relationship -- if it was ideal level -- ovee time labor and other disadvantages and advantages would level out to the benefit of both parties. This is not realistic and as we see some leveling adjustments are handled by tariffs. Vance and Trump are on the better route. Is it going to work? Somewhat. Government greed and warring messes up all the beneficial trade and relationships...humans have not changed...have they? All the very best and thank you for your thoughts.
About damn time someone talks about tariffs. Our government is supposed to be making its money from tariffs on imports and exports. It's not supposed to be making its money from the unconstitutional practice of taxing our time. Taxing imports and exports is good for us as it encourages us to be self reliant instead of dependent upon other countries for our survival. If we export nothing but import everything and even send our manufacturing base to foreign countries as we do then all our money goes out of the country. Pretty easy to see how our middle-class got hollowed out and why so many struggle just to make it when our grandparents had the opportunity to work normal working class jobs and live pretty comfortably with only one spouse working
Please invite Dan Davies on UnHerd to discuss his new book on unaccountability and talk about how each of the polarized US parties and other nations either acknowledge and struggle with this phenomenon, or are entirely unaware of (the lack of) accountability. Thanks.
Go to any art gallery, and you quickly realize that value is subjective. All I hear is "people are doing things that I don't value. Therefore, the government should step in."
Isnt this supposed to be about Vance? Nevertheless, a good analysis by Cass. Henry Ford realized a hundred years ago that higher wages allowed for more buying of his own and others' products.
Although the founding fathers generally opposed protectionist tariffs, almost all the functions of government were funded through import tariffs and most taxes on the populace did not exist. The thing I've noticed about a lot of free trade advocates is that they don't include citizen to citizen trade in that. They're happy to tax ordinary people into abject poverty, but don't want any of these "barriers to trade" (taxes/tariffs) on imports. If you need to violate some free trade to fund even a nightwatchman state, why not pick the least invasive possible tax - an import tariff? Why pick an intricate web of income taxes, property taxes, sales taxes, payroll taxes, capital gains taxes, money printer go 'burrrr' taxes, inheritance taxes, and sin taxes which require controlling and surveilling all interactions between citizens? Maybe that's the idea.

In his 2023 speech on foreign policy:
ruclips.net/video/TTVVtEwbzXg/видео.html
JD speaks about how he admires the bravery and courage of Ukrainian troops, as virtually everyone does.
"Prolonging a terrible war in Ukraine because it good for American business is grotesque."
Ukraine was universally called the most corrupt country in Europe for many many years before he arrived on the scene.

But until you understand freedom, until you fully embrace freedom, until you advocate for freedom, and until you support politicians who fight for freedom, don’t call yourself an American patriot. Instead, be honest and call yourself what you are: an authoritarian (of, relating to, or favoring blind submission to authority).
Unfortunately, most people like to be told what to do. Human beings are similar to sheep.
@@shawnaweesner3759I don’t think most people are sheep. I think most people are trying to do the right thing, but have been sold bad ideas. I brought up the founders because even as amazing as they were, they were all just human. All that separates them from most is a conviction that ideas matter and a dedication to thinking - things within the realm of possibility for all humans.
The fear of Catholic reason still haunts the US/UK 'freemasonic order'.
Bingo.
Yep
Great point.
Biden is a practicing Catholic. Ain't no one to criticize anyone's faith, but Vance is a recent convert from Evangelicalism.
Catholic reason?
Wow. This guy makes a lot of sense. 🤯
People are first and foremost human beings - valuable no matter what.
Lower federal taxes on everything
He’s the VP. By what the media has made of it you’d think he’s running against Kamala. He will easily do more than Kamala has done, NOTHING. That be zero.
1 really like Vance .But if things go well
( like pulling out of Ukraine ) he'd be in line for president in 2028
so what he does the coming term is pretty important .
I could not have asked for a better introduction to the new emerging US!
Agreed. I find Trump deplorable. I’m a working class guy who is socially liberal. So I have gravitated to the left. If the “new right” is against free trade and pro worker I can agree with that. However, I don’t agree with their social conservatism, the racist elements on the right, and the Christian right.
@@drewj4297 I find myself and all humans to be deplorable and in need of salvation. It gives many of us the fortitude necessary to find the best in other people and see how evil can be overcome.

The hysteria is ridiculous: he is not an isolationist nor for abolishing abortion (he's leaving it to the states; and that is a correct move). Love that phrase "fascist adjacent"? Musk!? I guess I'm fascist adjacent too. Oh, well. . .
The left is making fascism look more appealing every day.
Thank you for a very informative interview.
God forbid the well-being of the country as a whole come before fully lining your pockets. Protectionist sounds an awful like being called a 'phobe or racist these days.
VERY impressed with Oren Kass. He laid everything out beautifully. Very enlightening. His logic resonates well.
This guy being interviewed is utterly spot on..
Those are standard, traditional Republican views and have nothing to do with Trumpism.
Win win is fair to everyone. The idea of I win and you lose is just does not work!
Well done, Freddie !
Do you support free choice if the choices aren't woke? What do you mean by security?
He seems like a decent guy, hasn’t said anything wrong
He said the UK was the world’s first Islamic nuclear power. Pakistan have had nukes for decades. So that’s one thing he’s got wrong.

@@stellarjayatkins4749 seems like evidence that Oren Cass doesn't know much about the world beyond the USA. So his ideas about what are US international interests could well be sketchy (ie unwise).
@@bazstraight8797Cass is no different than most Americans who typically don't know very much about foreign countries nor their histories. On the other hand I don't sense that he has very strong opinions about foreign policy outside of its economic effects upon American workers -- nothing wrong with that, really.
So, I’m a member of the “new right,” so to speak. However, one thing to take from this conversation is that the new right is diverse in ideas. For example, I am a free trader with some caveats regarding China. I don’t share the particular view he is outlining, except for the obvious overlap that we must start focusing on a significant amount of the ever growing problems at home. This is why I preferred Vivek to JD although I like JD for a significant amount of other reasons.
Y’all ignored Patrick Buchanan for years… until his ideas ate the Republican Party. 😂
Pat was a true patriot unlike the Neocons
😅 that's actually kinda true. Sure miss the Mclaughlin group. Bye BYE!
In 1950 the average income family could realistically consider buying a house. Today such families can not do so.

I really like JD Vance
😂👍 😂
Excellent argument.
The world needs more anti-trust. Working in tech, it's made me despondent that a primary goal of most small tech companies is to sell to one of the big three.
What the guest is saying about productive capitalism versus increasing wealth from shuffling pieces of paper is no different from what China is also focused on… a backlash on financial companies who make money out of thin air..
Finally I hear someone talking about the truth of business with China. a lot of the industry has to go back to the USA xq already with the salaries of the moment you can compete and the USA always manufactured quality products and China manufactures
