Looking at all the different views about the 1857 revolt, one cannot help but realise how revolutions actually happen. It is beautiful.
On the topic of IF 1857 should be considered a war for independence, I feel this -
Yes, the revolt of 1857 was not the first, neither completely spread out in the country, nor was it an act meant to overthrow an oppressive regime in the hopes to establish self-rule. What it was, however, an act to establish ‘self-rule’. That cannot be disputed and here’s why -
1. The British not only exploited and constantly acted in an oppressive manner but took away the ability of the people to choose for themselves.
2. Any self-respecting individual will feel anguished when he/she finds itself in a situation imposed on him by an authority.
3. Keeping in mind the above and historical facts, the 1857 revolt, though motivated out of personal motives and resentment against ‘the Raj’ - brought together all the people at a large scale.
The common resentment became the basis on which people of different ideologies, classes, races, religions acted in one direction.
And this is how revolutions begins -
1. Party A starts dictating terms to Party B.
2. Party B initially accepts but starts to think if this should be acceptable or not?
3. Party A continues to impose its will.
4. Party B feels oppressed. Resentment arises in its heart.
5. Party A ignores what Party B feels and continues the same.
6. Party B has had enough and is now ready to fight for itself. It looks around to validate its own feelings and if there are others who feel the same. Oh! Look, Party C and D share the feelings albeit for different reasons.
7. Party B, C and D join hands and devise a plan to overthrow Party A.
8. Tada! We have a revolution!
PS: I do not why I wrote this long comment. I just felt like writing my thoughts out.

And and remember there were hardly any clues of concept of India and nationalism back then until Congress/Ghandhi came into picture……we shouldn’t club both concept respecting that time period.
