  • A recieve test. Testing an aincent Icom IC-M12 against a modern Baofeng GT-3TP.
It's not even close, the vintage Icom wins hands down!
The Baofeng GT-3 is not one of the el-cheapo Baofengs, like the uv10, it was a quite expensive radio (for a baofeng) at around £55.
Ok, so you could argue that the Icom is a dedicated Marine band radio, where as the Baofeng is a general purpous radio, but the Icom is using antiquated technology from the 80's (?), so you would expect the modern radio, with its modern technology, to wipe the floor with its grandpa, though it just doesn't.
This is a genuine test, with both radios using the same external antenna. I had to use an sma to bnc adaptor on the GT-3, but it is a high quality adaptor, so wouldn't affect the signal that much.
The transmitting station was Falmouth Coastguard sending its normal nightly weather report, so you can be assured there was no sneaky tricks there to let the Icom win.
I swapped the antenna cable between the radios as the weather report was being broadcast.
I have more old marine radios to test and another Baofeng too, but thats for another time.
If you have any ideas for different tests I could try, please comment below.

It is should be around 5 watts, but I haven't tested that radio yet... I tested another one which was only doing 0.5 watts. They are very old and I think some components in the RF Output stage are bad.
