Honestly, as someone who has been in a management position and has since gone back down due to changing companies, if you don't lead by example then I can't respect you. Had a sales manager who lived by that and a supervisor who didn't. Sales manager completely saw my point and interviewed me when a spot opened up. Managers should know you're only as good as your weakest teammate, and if you aren't building towards the standards you set then you shouldn't be a leader.
One of the things I found it helpful is developing domain expertise. It helps you build the credibility and gain the respect as a leader.
