Okay but can we also acknowledge the fact that many of the creatures designs(and some abilities) are actually scientifically accurate/plausible? Like the Ghost Leviathan- It's primarily a deep sea predator, which requires bioluminescence and the ability to sneak up on prey/escape predators. Their primarily translucent skin is a big factor! It glows, but the way you don't see it until it's basically too late are actual adaptations seen in predators and prey her on Earth! Color changing cells are combined with light refracting cell, light producing cells, and transparent cells to break up its outline, allowing it to hunt easier in its environment and maybe even evade larger leviathans. The large mouth is to scoop up any prey that happens to fit and the wide head is to ram into prey to stun them(most likely it'll target those schools of fish that're swimming around), streamline body is for speed, lil' arms are to help with turning and also appear to help with propulsion. *Honestly studying marine bio and figuring this all out makes those guys even more terrifying-*
You are not wrong, but I believe that adult Ghost Leviathans are mostly filter feeders ! IIRC, young GL are indeed predators, but once they grow too big they migrate to the deep sea and become filter feeders. It makes sense with their environnent : the edges of the map are described as ecologicaly dead zones, which only support microscopic and Leviathan type creatures. There, being a predator would be unviable ! They can still hunt and be dangerous, but they don't primarily feed that way. They are extremely territorial creatures, I believe, and that is why they attack you.
Fellow marine biologist here, I also love how the creatures habitat and ecology factor into their design and behavior. Another great example is a crab snake- they are ambush predators that live in a dark cave system- hence their lack of eyes (similar to other animals that live in the dark) and their snake-like design. The mandible-like teeth are great for catching fast prey (oculus peepers). Stalkers are another great example- being speedy pack hunters makes them perfect predators for the slow-moving but pod-dwelling and highly defensive Gastropods, similar to an elephant-lion type relationship

If you haven't done Subnautica in VR yet, yeah; you might shit your pants if you do! It could be that you got as immersed as I did, but because of bugs in the game (before I found out you could download mods for the game, some specially for VR that fixes most problems), I was forced to do do some area in pancake mode (normal monitor instead of VR), and it was nowhere as scary or immersive anymore. I'm actually curious if it's actually much more scary in VR mode for a person who has played pancake mode before doing VR. And it's not one incident where I have screamed out loud while playing subnautica either! I have done it at least twice, and both of them were when a leviathan charged me (the red and white one). I can't actually remember doing that before in a computer game, at least with that intensity! Subnautica is one of the best VR games I have played till now (I haven't played any of the full cost vr games yet), even with it's bugs in VR! It's sad that their next game probably won't support VR... But from what I've heard, most of the compelling reasons I played subnautica 1, is lost in Below Zero anyhow (in that you are no longer isolated, it's multiplayer etc)... I think the combination of swimming and behing in vehicles primarily, instead of walking around (yeah, I know there are some walking in the game), makes the game extra immersive in VR! I remember the first time I launched it, and I was so amazed even though I had played a lot of other VR content beforehand!
as someone working on creating an alien world, this vid was very helpful! My creatures, Aith'Gar, were created with the purpose of mixing both frightening and humanizing traits into a semi aquatic design. Since they're, well, bitey water noodles, I used references like subnautica, Monster Hunter, and real life animals as a base. To help me with the whole fish-out-of-water theme I even generated a purely aquatic design and let it "evolve" through throwing the design in various situations. I never was versed in creature design so your videos with regards to this process really aided me in the initial design process.

This is a great Video! It's kinda funny when you said, that you should run when you see a Leviathan, because that brought a fun Memory I had while playing it and talking to a friend. I wanted to explore the Game first in Creative Mode, just to see the whole World without being stressed out the whole time (which I still was, because of my fear of Underwater Worlds) and I already knew of the Reaper and that it indeed is able to Jumpscare you, so I took the Cyclops to the Aurora and parked it as far away from the Reaper as possible On the Aurora. So when I came back to my Cyclops I met a big mistake in my plan.. I couldn't get it off the Aurora, so I had to swim, my friend at least said that. I didn't want that, because that would mean I will see the Reaper, which was not my Plan, so I tried everything, for example using that Gravity Gun and throwing Items at the Cyclops, going in there and driving it, it was no use, but then I saw that you can drive at Emergency Speed and I told my friend "If I am able to free myself in the next 2 Minutes, we go to an Aquarium, you pay" she said "Deal, but I don't know why you got that confi-" While she said that I used the Emergency Speed, went backwards and IT WORKED! You can also create your own worlds! and write stories in them, immerse yourself and play RPGS like D&D in them with other people! This allows for limitless imaginative creative storytelling! I love logically consistent world-building and creature design that takes real world biology and anatomy into consideration! This subnautica looks great thanks for sharing!
My favorite creatures in the game are stalkers and those giant, red rays that you find in the active lava zone. I also love the little robots in the bases that are farther down.
Awesome channel. Agree with you when you say that in some games art component articulates player's experience. Hunt Showdown for example, has similar mechanics to Escape from Tarkove, but art direction makes it a unique experience.
I wrote about Subnautica in an expository essay about how games are and are not harmful to kids. I had the idea because I used to watch Jacksepticeyes's episodes from when he started the series. Never played the game but I was fascinated to no end by this game. Every time they updated the game to have a new creature, I needed to see how it looked. It really shows how far a fictional world can go and it keeps us curious. Curious as to what else may be out there.

this was the first video I saw from you guys, and this video combined with the smaugust videos are definitely the best videos, you are definitely my favorite, and I recommend that you review the character design from cuphead, with the sheer quality of the game, it definietly deserves a character design video; thanks.
