Honestly, I'm glad it was issued and saw service. That gives it a far richer history than being some pristine little Shelf Queen that barely sees the light of day each decade, since it was originally put together.
Wow! I heard about this story. I finally got to see it here on video. This is one of my favorite rifles and I own an M1903 myself. I love the sights on it.
TFB TV I just wanted to let you know that they’ve changed the name of the dirtwood. Now it’s platinum gentleman’s club. If you keep up with any of your marines that have kids getting stationed here, warn em?
This may be about the first Model 1903 Springfield rifle, NOT the first Springfield rifle. General George Washington, before he was President, approved the site of the Springfield Armory in 1777. It served as an arsenal only until 1795. It's first firearm was the Model 1795, though technically not a "rifle", it was a smoothbore musket patterned after the French Charleville. The first RIFLE produced at Springfield was the Model 1803. Also produced at Harper's Ferry. After the destruction of the Harper's Ferry factory, Springfield was the only manufacturer of rifles for the military until the Rock Island Arsenal was opened in 1862. Springfield made dozens of rifle and carbine models prior to the Model 1903. Most well known Models 1855, 1861, 1862, 1863, 1866, 1873, 1878, 1884, 1892, 1894, 1896, 1898, 1899 and THEN...the 1903. Springfield continued to produce rifles until 1968, it's last production military rifle being the US M-14. Since then the military has contracted production to firearms manufacturers and got out of the business of making firearms.
WOW! Really love that content- who woulda thought that the "primum semper" would have been just issued to "some Joe"! Even more amazing that it found it's way home after all that time. Absolutely an American treasure but I would wish all us vets could at least get to "cop a feel" on M1903 #1!BTW- anybody gots #2?... Fifty bucks right now...
I am not going to lie. I think it is generally expected for the early numbered guns to be issued regardless the #. You have to understand. We benefit from modern hindsight. People back then do not always know or recognize what they have will become significant or historically important later. They just treated it like a regular old item manufactured for service. This is why I think they issued the gun. Honestly, it might have been too premature in some way to send it to a museum for that number yet back then at that moment it was made. It was produced to be given for soldiers. That's what they chose to do with it.
They should tacti-cool this Springfield #1 with ebay gun parts.green laser, red dot, quad rail, chop the barrel back 5 inches for no reason and hydro dip it in zombie green skulls theme with canted back up sights....perfection!
Better or not the M17 Enfield was produced in greater numbers and supplied in greater numbers to US troops in France. That is 75 % of troops carried it.
Does anyone know any cheap gun classes in San Diego, I want to tell my dad and see if he can take me because I want to know complete gun safety, my dad told me basic gun safety (don't aim it at someone, turn safety on after you put it down, place it on something in front of you if you stop using it, etc)
TFB TV my parents split up, my mom doesn't have much money right now (she has a decent amount, but she just paid all the bills) luckily I live in a conservative area of the county but I do hate this place, I'd rather live in Nevada with my uncle (I don't know why I call him my uncle, he's in his 70's) the first time I went shooting wasn't too bad, I went with my dad and a guy who helped pay for range time, I shot an AR-15 and a .22 pump action rifle, my aim is pretty good considering I'm blind out of my left eye and have 20/40 vision in my right (don't feel bad for me) but I got a round stuck in the chamber of the AR 15 and we couldn't get it out, it was still fun though
well, it depends on how you look at it. from a tactical stand point, it is another thing that has to be taped down in the field to keep it from making noise or getting snagged on stuff. the modern military rarely stacks rifles, everyone is to keep their weapons within arms reach at all times, we don't leave them "over there". modern slings use one sling point at the rear, if they use one at all, so why put stacking or sling swivel on if it doesn't need to be there.
I'd argue about how many times a stacking swivel was taped down to make no noise(although that's a valid point) but it is such a minor thing to put on one's gun that it really shouldn't be a problem to make them for modern rifles. On the other hand as you say, modern military doesn't really stack weapons anymore so why bother? But if you are worried about swivel making noise then just copy Germans' idea of stacking rods :P
I'm guessing that the other number one was a Krag-Jorgensen. Awesome video, made even better with the back story by the soldier it was issued to. I would have been disappointed like he was to lose the number one Springfield to be issued a 1917 Enfield. I just never warmed up to the Enfield. Nice gun, but kinda clunky to my tastes.
Stacking Swivel* It’s what Tripp’s used to do to stack their rifles while encamped or otherwise busy. We still do it with M16s in Boot Camp and sometime in the Fleet but rarely. -Miles
My company in the US Army Reserves had a 4.2 mortar with the serial number 0007 back in 1980s. We had problems shooting it because at some point in time the ammo specs were tightened and the rifling was too tight for the newer rounds. Apparently the tube had gotten slightly out of round over the years, and we were now (then) getting hang fires (not fun). They were able to fix it.
the bayonet looks like they had a lot of phillips scewdrivers left over from somewhere....that type screwdriver prolly wasn't in use yet but that's not the point....so save ur breath
Justin Jake Tabasa functionally the enfield was a better rifle, it had far better sights which that alone is enough. These weren’t issued to collectors, they were used in war, so your emotional attachments mean nothing.

1903 Springfield serial #1 Should be placed in the million dollar gun category
Trust a Marine Grunt to notice the stacking swivel/sling swivel being reversed; Well Done, Brother!
Miles has really hit his stride on this channel. Great work!
m1917 as replacement is a huge upgrade, but having serial number 1 is super cool
The other number 1 gun is a 30-40 Krag model 1894
Wow! I heard about this story. I finally got to see it here on video. This is one of my favorite rifles and I own an M1903 myself. I love the sights on it.
Pretty cool! Love the bit where the guy who it was originally issued to saw his rifle in a museum. Kinda heart warming really
And it has a pretty neat story behind it. Good video.
I rarely give Miles a thumbs up, but this was an awesome interview.
*BUT HE WAS NUMBER ONE*
Sorry. I just had to get that out of my system. I'll leave now.
deadfishbrohoof It was just a lesson in trickery, that went down in history..
Great job Miles
Beautiful piece of history, if it could only talk, the stories it could tell....
Miles, keep this content up. This is why I love TFBTv. Btw, were you ever at camp lejeune?
Will do for you brother!
And indeed I was, HP 185 on River Road, across from that chow hall, a couple barracks’ away from the base church.

Excellent. It's about time the 1903 was featured.
Things like that were not that important years ago Winchester model 70 no 1 I believe was found in a ranchers truck in Colorado in the 90's
Very Cool 1903. I would love to have a 1903 Springfield rifle in my collection.
keep up the great vids!

I have a1903 with serial no. 828435 but cannot find information about it.
you sound a lot like indy neidell in the beginning

ive lived next to springfield ma for almost 20 years and i have never been to the armory im ashamed of myself
I have a 1903 that was made in 1906 with a 1906 bayonet within 1K of the serial of the rifle
Well the dude giving up serial number 1 getting an M1917 is good for him the m1917 is a better gun then the original m1903 with far better sights
Private Smuckatelli.
I have a 1903 Springfield made in 1918 in the 700k range. 1944/45 barrel so im assuming it was used in ww2 for sure and maybe ww1.
They should tacti-cool this Springfield #1 with ebay gun parts.green laser, red dot, quad rail, chop the barrel back 5 inches for no reason and hydro dip it in zombie green skulls theme with canted back up sights....perfection!

I have a Springfield 1903 30.06 bolt action and a 1898 Springfield bolt action 30 40 krag
6:12 Springfield model 1892 krag jorgensen
The other rifle showed with serial no. 1 is a Krag-Jorgensen

Man, you need to leave that state brother, it is not one conducive to proper firearms education.

I forgot to mention I'm 13
Awesome
the garand would seem to be the last one with a stacking swivel.
I'm pretty sure M16s have one as well and some other guns I'd guess.
M16 does not. it has a sling swivel. you stack them with the front sight A-frame. M14 also appears to only have a sling swivel.
That's a disappointment... I guess the Garand is the last one then. Such a simple idea yet it worked great :P
well, it depends on how you look at it. from a tactical stand point, it is another thing that has to be taped down in the field to keep it from making noise or getting snagged on stuff. the modern military rarely stacks rifles, everyone is to keep their weapons within arms reach at all times, we don't leave them "over there". modern slings use one sling point at the rear, if they use one at all, so why put stacking or sling swivel on if it doesn't need to be there.

Make a rewiev on a walther wa2000 sniper rifel, if you can of course

"30 ought 03" little slip of the tongue?
30 aught 3. Though ought is the archaic term for aught.
it's somewhere in the video, he say's 30 aught 03, not 30-03, not 30 aught 3
What's an attacking swivel?
Stacking Swivel*

Imagine being the guy in your squad with rifle #1.
Sucks that it isnt origimal but cool nonetheless. Ill be "that guy" the 1917 is a superior rifle to the original 03.
I’m curious what this would bring at auction

Why wouldn't the rifle be issued if the serial number was 1? Is it a convention?
Go to some chicken fights. They have some very talented birds. You should look into the Cartels Weponrey
Miles has nice hair. 😱👌
Miles, for God's sake, do you even get tested before you change your hunting field?
Goddamn it, I knew the sex jokes would start coming in when I went to Thailand, but not this early!
-Miles
Never mind. You seem nice white young man. Come to Ram Bar, Charoen Prathet Soi 6. I invested that place, you are very welcome. XOXO - Channarong
Miles very nice name, you หมีน้อยของฉัน.

It was his gun, mr Krabs! It was number 1!
Great video, interesting story indeed.
Still had to lol at "thirty ought o three" though, silly 'muricans!
It’s a krag
Edit: the rifle that he said to guess I mean
the bayonet looks like they had a lot of phillips scewdrivers left over from somewhere....that type screwdriver prolly wasn't in use yet but that's not the point....so save ur breath

2:53 he should've gotten another Springfield rifle. M1917 Enfield rifles are gay.
Justin Jake Tabasa functionally the enfield was a better rifle, it had far better sights which that alone is enough. These weren’t issued to collectors, they were used in war, so your emotional attachments mean nothing.
1917s are better for different reasons
Dellacondan my SMLE is the worst rifle in my collection. My shitty Mauser has a better action
