I think another pointer that could be helpful is that you should not start an attack with a spin kick. It should be set up as part of a combo or as a follow-up to a feint. Even better though is when they're used as as counterattack to the round kick, though that takes a lot of practice to get the timing right, and to have the ability to see the difference between a feint and a committed round kick.
As an itf taekwon-do black belt practitioner, any technique that requires spinning, is very risky. The textbook terminology of spinning kicks/techniques says "spinning"... But it's actually a turn, rather than a spin. Gabriel is right. Over turning is not okay, especially in competition or self defense.
We never trained spinning stuff that much so I was on my own in learning it. The first tip opened up my eyes - I usually tried to rotate as hard as I could thinking that it was the source of power in those kicks. Now I know better. Thank you, Gabriel, great video! Can't wait to practice them again with that knowledge.
Can confirm, good advice/reminder! One point I'd add, always rotate your arms so that your hands are back in defence position the moment your leg touches the ground again.
Again great video.I notice in this video that you are not kicking from normal boxing stand. When you are in boxing stand are you moving your left foot to the right side when kicking with your right foot ?another thing are you ever using horse kick? good bad or ?
Not sure if you have already covered stretching and mobilisation techniques. That would be good. Or even muscle strength too for those high spinning kicks
I've never practiced this kick (my Coach hasn't teach me it) but I have landed a couple times doing sparring, one time I hit the dude in the stomach and he went down
You're mentioned in this UFC 266 Breakdown! ruclips.net/video/qoBivy9-elY/видео.html I also agree with you that the Ortega fight should've been stopped. Thank you for the amazing content!
I have a question , hope u have the time I've been practicing it for months now and I can already do a full split, but I still can't manage to get my kick higher during the turn .. it Will not go to the Max do you have tips for this, I can't find this anywhere on youtube
Honestly if you're talking spinning kicks, check out Valentina Shevchenko. She has arguably more clean ones than Wonderboy and almost zero telegraphing.
Alot of times the karate guys who do this stuff alot will just put their foot down after the kick rather than come back because they switch orthodox to southpaw all the time anyway lol.
Common mistakes when throwing techniques. We've covered body hooks, head round kicks, the overhand and spinning kicks.
What should be next?
Leg kicks, I don't wanna end up with my shin snapped 😭
@@dylanstockard3855 I think he may have already covered that after Connor McGregor snapped his.
@@TheDAP8576 oh sweet I'll take a look thanks!
What about the effectiveness of uncommon kicks like the axe kick?
Side kicks! And why they are used in mma very much even though theyve got great range, or how to use that range!

Thanks for the great content Gabe. I train in traditional muay thai style where we don't train spinning kicks, but I will consider your instruction!

but I still can't manage to get my kick higher during the turn .. it Will not go to the Max
do you have tips for this,
I can't find this anywhere on youtube
i thought it was because i didn't have enough speed during the turn.. but you can do it stationary so this can't be the problem
My favourite part is when you say "counterbalances" while executing a spinning hook kick.

Yo do your knees not get injured with these spinning kicks mine hurt like a mother fucker every now and then
If you never said "throw" I would assume you were American 🤣
