Sturgill has said that “You can have the crown” is one of those songs that he almost wishes he’d never written. When he wrote it he was actually just trying to see how many cliches he could fit into one song and that it ended up being a last second addition to the record. Now it is one of his most requested songs and what was supposed to be this tongue-in-cheek song of cliches is one of his most popular tunes. He’s said he doesn’t even really like playing it anymore. Turns out he’s such a phenomenal writer that even when he’s facetiously writing, it’s still a fantastic song 😂 his wit and writing style just shine through so well it’s hard not to love this song though!
Take anything Sturgill says about his music with a grain of salt. He just released a bluegrass version of this song...rhyming Bronco with Mongo. Classic.
That guitar player is actually very good. Those fillings and licks are awesome, never overplays and plays only the essencial but in a really tasty way. Top notch guitar player
This was the best way to kick off the live stream. Sturg is the man! And Chuck D. I knew you were the kid sitting on the couch watching Boss Hog just like me!!! LOL my brother from another! Burt GREAT show as always my man, see you next Tuesday!!!!
My favorite thing about You Can Have The Crown is how Sturgill keeps referring back to earlier lines in the song. Like the rob a bank bit and the whatever rhymes with Bronco. That just really pulls it back together as a song and commentary. I can think of a lot of worse ways to spend a day than sitting with Chuck Diesel, watching Andy Griffith and Dukes of Hazard, while trying to find the missing line for a song. To be honest though, I am at a loss for a good lyrical rhyme or match to use with Bronco. Lol.
“ I’ve been spending all my money on weed and pills, trying to write a song to pay the bills but it ain’t came yet, guess I’ll have to rob the bank..” best lyrics ever in a song It literally is a man who doesn’t give a shit about anyone else’s opinion but his own.
You should react to the cover of this song that Post Malone did, backed by Dwight Yoakam’s band. That’s right, Posty. He recorded it for a benefit concert for Texas after the ice storms. It will give you a whole new respect for Post Malone and his talent. It’s on RUclips. Look it up!
God it's so much to say about Strurgill‼️ "Breakers roar" "It aint all flowers" "Welcome to earth" "Jesus boogie" "All around you" "Turtles all the way" And you can forget what got me hooked "I don't mind" his music speaks for itself and can't be duplicated, best country music artist of the fcking decade in my opinion
Sturgill also has one "The Dead Don't Die" & my favorite line is " WHEN THE AFTERLIFE IS OVER THE AFTERLIFE LIVES ON" Thanks Again for Honest Reactions
Sturgill Simpson Is 1 of the Nicest People you'll ever meet, met him at Pgh. Intl. Airport & my wifw Got her Pic with him & talked to him for about 1/2 hr , if you get a chance check out his CUTTING GRASS VOl. 2 REDID HIS SONGS BLUEGRASS & he did a show of all of them on youtube at the Grand Ole Opry. You won't be disappointed.
What happened with the recording of that song? Why is there so many different versions? It’s so confusing. And I swear the original version is unavailable at this time
Still loving the vibes of this channel every day! In addition to Derek Spencer, which I suggested a couple of days ago, you should check out Brent Cobb - Black Creek. Keep it up!!
“I’m so broke, I can’t pay attention.” LOL love Sturgill

The train horn sound he replicates on the song that follows is phenomenal. I'd never seen that done before.
