I visited tower hill as a child, and the ranger gave me a book on wildlife in the park. This is what I attribute to give me an interest in the environment and behind the interest so much I studied and got a Science degree. Unfortunately I don't often travel to western Victoria and I haven't been back since. Hopefully one day I will be back.

Sadly, the majority of what was planted at tower hill doesn't belong to our region. It is also riddled with the weed hemlock.
I can also confirm the emu don't fear human or cars.

Thanks Philip, this was so informative. I grew up near Tower Hill, but haven't visited in years. It's wonderful to see it looking so lush and green. I remember when schools in the region all took turns in planting trees in different areas, which gave people a sense of pride and responsibility.

Just drove past this today (12th Aug) but didn't have time to stop. Was at Budj Bim yesterday (11th Aug). Such a beautiful area. Keen to go back west to visit and explore again soon! Was visiting family in Heywood and drove back to Werribee via the Great Ocean Road until the Twelve Apostles before taking a more direct route back home.

Tower Hill is a State Game Reserve. Important distinction for a particular reason every march until 930am daily.

The bus to Port Fairy more or less takes the same route as the former rail line and is pretty regular for a country bus, but it does drop you off a fair way from the actual entrance. The bus stop is closer to the exit but fair warning there is a steep series of hair pin bends you need to climb out of the park. Nonetheless I really enjoyed exploring Tower Hill on foot! The Warrnambool line is one of my favourite V/Line journeys simply because of the N class - enjoy them while you can. Koroit is a nice little town as well if you want a feed, on the same bus route.

Great episode. Very informative and great camera work. When my family went to Tower Hill for a BBQ we had a pack of Emus steal our lunch off the hot plate and they chased us. We had Maccas that day

I love your content, and am 100% for seeing you combine Vline with cycling to tell us about Victoria's history. I'd love to see a video on Alps Link. Australia's highest altitude public transport service. You can do it as a loop, by catching a train to either Wangaratta or Bairnsdale, and the buses to Bright and Omeo to link to it. Accomodation is cheaper in Omeo than in Bright, in case that matters. In Winter it's difficult to take your bike because the coaches to Hotham are often filled with ski equipment, but if you do the trip clockwise on the summer timetable, it's easy to take your bike, to aid in exploring.

Big fan of your videos. Would love to see a history of some of the gothic or gothic style architecture around Melbourne. Such as 48 Drummond St, Carlton; 293 Church St, Richmond; 388 Collins St, Melbourne and any others I might have missed. Keep the content coming! Cheers

Great video. Really interesting. I actually live in Hamilton, and there's a few other outposts similar, especially Budj Bim, and local mountain around here, Mt. Bainbridge is an old volcano/lava flows.
Odd fact: the road is Mt. Baimbridge. The school is Baimbridge College. The mountain itself is Bainbridge.
I definitely think this is a trip I should make, although I don't head to Warrnambool often.

shame about denuding tower hill. about 50 years ago, i'd seen an early 1900's stereoscopic view of a waterfall near warrnambool with lots of tree ferns and trees so we went there and what we saw were no trees or tree ferns but open paddocks with sheep, sheep shit and a road that crossed the stream just near the falls. disappointing.

Hmm last train to Port Fairy you say was 1977 and yet attending grade 6 in 1979 my entire Koroit Primary School caught a free train ride from Koroit to Port Fairy before it's closure. I know I was there in 1979 on the train to Port Fairy from Koroit, & yet you said it closed in 1977 😂

    • @philipmallis
      @philipmallis  3 месяца назад +3

I should clarify that I meant the last -scheduled- passenger service was 1977. The line continued to carry goods trains for a while after and I understand there were some special trains, probably the one you've described. victorianrailways.net/photogallery/westsou/gal05/portfairy.html

What I don't understand is how it is possible for the Australian Aboriginals to be repeating the story of a volcanic eruption that happened 35000 years ago!
From what I know, the Australian Aboriginals didn't live much past the age of 40 years before the country was colonised, there's a lot of generations of people over 35000 years, how long before the story becomes irrelevant and not interesting to the people who came much much later and didn't experience it!
To me, tower hill is no different than the pyramids of Giza Egypt, and the pyramids were supposed to be built way after this volcano erupted and no one can explain how or why the pyramids were built....
I'm looking at this volcano and listening to its supposed history and I can't even fathom what it must have been like when it was active.
I have tried to educate my kids on my history and culture and I know how difficult it is to get them to remember any of it, even as remarkable as my history is....

Hey there, I just came across something interesting that I thought would be right up your ally for a vid but I don’t want to post it here. I went to your website but couldn’t find a email or contact me form. Is there a way to contact you? I have Insta and FB as well so if you’re on either of them I can send you a dm there.
