Internet Explorer had another icon between 2009 and 2015, it was actually for IE9 which came out in 2011.

2001 really loved diagonals. Adds so much life into it

Personally I prefer the simplification (in some situations). An example of doing it bad would be Firefox. Their last logo was already fine. It still looked like a fox but was styled. Now it looks like an orange streak

2019: Used on Windows 10 (20H2 onwards), 10X, and 11.

2001: Used for Windows XP. The Windows 2000/ME icon was used for 16 color mode.
2007: Used for Windows Vista, but resembles the Computer icon.
2009: Used on Windows 7. On Windows 8 and 8.1, the name has been changed from “Windows Explorer” to “File Explorer”.
2015: Used on Windows 10 1507 and 1511.
2016: Used on Windows 10 versions before 2019.
2019: Used on Windows 10 1903 onwards.
2020: Used on Windows 10X, and an unknown build of Windows 10.

Windows 11's icons looks more modern then any other version of Windows.

Weren't some 7 icons perhaps used in Vista as well? I mean, icons such as Generic folder labeled with 2009 also existed in 2007. There were also Vista-exclusive icons for Control Panel and media (such as Pictures and Videos) and one for IE (2009-2015).

Calculator, paint control panel and folders had its own icons in Windows Vista.

Well, in Vista RTM there was a Glassy Generic Folder icon that was changed to the 2009 labeled one in Vista Service Pack 1

@@xeeroh1 Like whatever you want. Designs that are Skeuomorphic (resembles real life objects) are my personal preference.
@@jayster3.0 the reason i like the modern icons is because it looks User-friendly and these high detail icons remind me of those scam websites when there are shiny detailed buttons and a very weird and trash font

I like how the updates are sometimes not by the RTM versions like the Media player update in Windows 11 22H2.
Windows 10 and older: 3D
Windows 11: *F L A T*
I like how all of the eras have different advantages.
For example, while 2007 (and often 2001) does look pretty, the whole "at an angle" thing is weird with the other apps on the computer. It would make sense if all of the default icons were at an angle, as a way to distinguish between default apps and ones you've downloaded, but many are not (e.g. control panel). The "some icons at an angle, some aren't" thing logically clashes... but then, you don't really notice that as a computer user, you just notice how pretty the icons individually are. All the icons facing forward (modern) makes most sense, but 2007 is most pretty.
There's also an advantage with the modern icons where some people just like flat aesthetics so the icons suit them. Personally, I don't really have a favourite aesthetic for computers.

I know this may be controversial, but I prefer the Windows 11 icons over Windows xp and Windows 10 icons. Fluent is a very good and modern design language that feels nice and smooth, not to mention how it makes the OS feel more alive and heck, it even looks very cool.
What I will have to say, by having used all four OSes shown in this video, is that Windows 7's GUI takes the win here. It feels so clear, peaceful, smooth and the realism makes it look infinitely nicer than Windows 10, which still has a solid design language btw.

Vista icon (the 2009 one with a green tint) and XP icon look amazing because of their Aero-style appearances and 2020 amd 2022 look good because of their Fluent appearances.
