  • In late November of 2020 I was finally able to go for a long (3 day) bike ride. In order to stay as far away from people as possible I rode on mostly gravel roads in southern Illinois. If you want a copy of my route with turn-by-turn directions, send me an e-mail at babikeadventures@gmail.com. I'm not sure if I was bike touring or bike packing but it was fun, Type 2 fun, if you know what I mean. I started at the western terminus of the River to River Hiking Trail in Grand Tower, Illinois on the Mississippi River and rode to Cave in Rock, Illinois on the Ohio River. The route cuts through the heart of the Shawnee Hills in southern Illinois. On day 1, I rode the Big Muddy Levee to Pine Hills then past Bald Knob and into Alto Pass. I rode down Water Valley and stopped at Panther Den Wilderness. On day 2, I rode past Bork Falls to Buncombe, onto the Odum Tract and the Tunnel Hill Bike Trail. From Stonefort I rode down Appel Rd. and stopped for the day at Burden Falls. On Day 3, I rode past William's Hill, Lusk Creek Wilderness and One Horse Gap on my way past the old Iron Furnace. From Rock Creek I finished the ride at Cave in Rock on the Ohio. The Shawnee National Forest has many opportunities for primitive Wilderness camping along the way. There are also plenty of cabins and B&B's. Make sure to plan ahead.

    I rode out of Harrisburg to Jackson Falls this past Saturday. That was a tough 40 mile day! I did 22 miles and took 145 back in the next morning to my truck. I drove 4 hours up from Tennessee Saturday before taking off on my ride. Beautiful place! I ran the Tunnel Hill 50 mile race in 2018 and man that ride was just as tough! Much respect for riding that loaded 3 days!

Thanks for sharing. Wishing you continued health and happiness, and maybe some day our bike adventure paths will cross.

      Thanks for watching and I really appreciate the nice comments. During the pandemic, I had nothing better to do than watch youtube videos on how to make youtube videos. Really. I've still got a lot to learn, but I can't wait to get out on the road this summer. I've been studying for my drone pilot certificate (FAA part 107). I'm still legal, but I'm learning a lot about that too. Thanks again!!

    Nice work. You're as lucky as I am to have a wife who helps with outings like this. My bicycle has been in some of those places, but I haven't had good luck with gravel roads in southern Illinois and southern Indiana. Too much loose gravel on top of a hard surface. Some of those ordinary gravel roads you were on didn't look too bad, though. And some of the not-so-ordinary ones were unlike anything I've ever tried. You're making me want to give the area another try.

    Paul, consider getting a water purifier. I have one that fits in my kit. You'll never find yourself with out water. I KNOW you teach biology, so you're familiar with the risks of drinking bad water, but these do the trick and keep you safe.

    • @paulsuchecki3985
      @paulsuchecki3985  3 года назад

      I have a water purifier, but I've never used it. I bought it to go bikepacking in out of the way places. I guess if I found myself in an emergency where I had no water and the only choice would be to drink out of a puddle. I just haven't been there yet. I don't even know if mine is a good one. It's heavy and I paid about $90 for it. You said that you have a good one. What kind do you have?

    Dude you’re my age.... my first thought is “wow that’s uncomfortable.” I did half of the trans-am (adventure cycling) from Missouri to Oregon in 2003, but my first long ride was the KATY trail back in the 90’s... I didn’t like the gravel. From there forwarded I only road on pavement. 👍

    • @paulsuchecki3985
      @paulsuchecki3985  3 года назад +1

      Type 2 fun is always uncomfortable at any age, especially 57. But like they say, it's not the years as much as the miles that count. If I was really hard core I would have slept outside on the hard ground instead of at home in my nice soft, warm bed. I've done the KATY trail and others like it, and I agree. It seems like a gravel surface slows one down. Fewer miles, harder and more gritty. I prefer paved roads for the most part, but riding on less traveled backroads is nice, especially during a pandemic. Thanks again for watching!

    Paul thanks for all your videos. I am thinking of doing your Southern Illinois Gravel ride the 3rd week of April. Will the leaves be out by then? My options for the shuttle are to see if a. I can hire someone from your area( do you know of anyone) b. Could find a second person to ride with and leave a car at each end or c. See if I can rent a cabin for my wife to stay in for 3 days while I do the ride. Do you know a location for my wife to stay for several days.
    Thanks, John

      Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it! It's been a cold spring and leaves are coming on slow. But by the 3rd week in April, I'm sure Spring will be in full swing. I don't know of anyone for hire. I've got to work. If you need help on the weekend, I might be able to. There are lots of cabins in the area. I would search on the web for "cabins in the Shawnee Forest". Cobden and Alto Pass are on the wine trail. Giant City Lodge is nearby. I really have no specific recommendations, I've never had to use one here. Hope that helps. Stay safe and ride on!
