You have just mentioned my top 4 watches I'd buy if I had a bigger budget. The 1016 ,36mm is still my favourite explorer, I'm also a skinny wristed guy so these vintage sizes fit beautifully. I don't know about your taste in Pacman Casio's but you definitely got good taste in Rolex mate 👍

Great video! I agree on the older references- so much better. Not to bring Omega into a Rolex conversation- but it very much reminds me of how I vastly prefer my Seamaster 300 2254, from roughly the same era, to the contemporary models...

I own a Rolex Thunderbird Turn-o-matic from the 1970s. I think it is extremely underrated. You can find them on the used market for $3.5K - $5K. A step up from a Oyster perpetual in my humble opinion.

Great video! The Rolex 16570 is an iconic lovely sports watch!! They do indeed wear smaller than the 40mm referenced size... hence why I sold my 16570 Polar and went w/the newer 216570 Polar for my 8-1/4" wrist.

I’m totally with you MWC, the late 80s to late 90s era of Rolex is the one that appeals to me the most too. Any Rolex is more than I’m personally able to justify paying for a watch unfortunately but if I had the money, it would hands down be a watch from this era that I’d be shopping for rather than a new one.
Amazing show as always MWC 🙌

I completely agree with your assessment of the 16570, but judging by the price, it is no longer a tool watch. Like it`s iterations, it has become a luxury collector's item. So price and enjoyment may not go together.

The Spelunking aspect of the Explorer i like because that was when Rolex were still actually tool watches, i.e. North Sea oil rig divers wearing submariners, not watches for guys trying to show off how rich and successful they are ....what would you rather hear 'yup i got this specifically made watch for my weekend adventures cave exploring' 'i use this submariner while diving and repairing North Sea oil rigs, or 'yeah you know i'm a playa i made it bro ... Can't you tell since i'm wearing a Rolex'.
The first story attracts me more than the.second which is why i currently favor Sinn over Rolex at the moment.

I had a black dial 2004 16570 and I have to agree 100% with what you said about the watch. It’s sublime to wear and the black dial is actually the more stunning one when seen up close on the wrist (thanks to the contrast with the white gold index surrounds). I tried multiple times and I just couldn’t pull off any of the 6-digit Explorer IIs. Sadly, I sold mine to fund the purchase of a modern Sub. Happy with my choice, but I’m still missing my old 16570. I have a feeling that either this and the Brosnan-era SMP300 will be my first ever reacquisition in the future.

Great video. I have the Japanese version of the INCIPIO Explorer2 'splunker' as you called it. Got it early 2000's for under £500. These Incipio brand watches out of Japan are excellent. Look exactly like the original ( without the R name ) and have no issues with reliability or timing. So I got as close as I could afford for the price of an R service. You should checkout Incipio, there are about 12 models in the 'homage' range.

What is your wrist size? Because if it’s anywhere close to 7in the new explorer II looks fine on that size wrist. The 39/40mm explorer II is extremely nice and probably a better size overall, but the new one isn’t actually 42mm it’s 41.2mm and not as different as people think essentially makes it the exact same size as the TUudor GMT but much thinner at 12.2mm and better designed in general.
