Yeah, he's a lot better than I thought, actually. His bass is sort of low in the mix, so I think a lot of it isn't even really heard consciously. I actually found this video by searching "nikki sixx bass tone" to see how he does it. It reminds me of Bill Laswell's subsonic bass. It's so "fuzzy" around the edges it's almost invisible. It really works perfectly. It's nice how they finally got some HD quality video in 2016 so you can hear the bass and guitar tones clearly and see how well they play together...shame Vince is doing that mumbling / out-of-breath stuff, though. Shame they never had a real good quality live video at their 80s peak.

Nikki sixx is under rated. It took me a long time to really come to that conclusion. I was listening to Motley in the car once and really vibing on it listening to Tommy and Nikki and it clicked.
They are not the most technical but they do the job of keeping things going really well. For me a good rhythm section is the engine of the band. That is really all at matters.

There's some bass guitar there remaining, so he probably played it on bass guitar initially, and then most of it was later replaced in production. And the synth bass doesn't play the climbing fill as D-0-2-3-4-5 but D-0-1-2-3-4!

The record rly needs to be set once n for all that the reason why Cliff WIlliams and Michael Anthony don't get flak like Sixx is because they AREN'T IN THE SAME LEAGUE. Check out Dreamer by Home, one of Cliff's early bands, or the isolated bass track for For Those ABout to Rock and tell me he isn't a BITCHING bass player, or at least MUCH better than Sixx. For MA, check out Beautiful Girls. And Push COmes to Shove off Fair Warning. In fact, that whole album is progressive as hell and so is a lot of the bass playing/overall musicianship. Fuck, even Ian Hill's walking lines on the first two Priest albums prove he's in a whole other league than Sixx. The only thing similar between them, is Sixx's style and the style those other three chose to employ for a lot of their band's poppiest hits because it's what worked in that situation. THAT'S IT. Furthermore, that style isn't even bad, and I'm talking as a bass player who loves to shred. Sixx was a shitty bassist in many cases because he couldn't even pull off that style tightly live a lot of times! To his credit, he could other times; he was very inconsistent. When pulled off tightly and on records, it's fine if it's called for. However, if you're a fuckin paid musician, you SHOULD be consistent... especially if you're party of the rhythm section.

Well my man it's like this.... To play like him all you just do is play some boring -ass 8th notes and be a chord chaser and. bob your head up and down like your are rocking out or somthing.... And that's how you play like cliff williams.... Shit!!! ( try learning from some other bass play that has more guts than cliff williams from ac/dc!!!!

But....... If you REALLY want to play bass...... Try listen to some 60's and 70's bass players,,,,, back then you REALLY have to play the hell out of it. you can't be a pussy about!! and stay away from alot of 80's bass players. Hey... don't get me wrong... I REALLY LOVE THE 80"s Shit.. I am an 80's type of guy, BUT.. Most of the bass players at that time took the easy way out by being a chord chaser and playing 16th notes alot , and and over buying gear that they think that they need, and ended up not using. (what a waste)

People say he's not good. I agree. But he doesn't need to be. It still works really really well. And besides, fancy slap or whatever just wouldn't fit the music. I play bass for my band, and when I have to make the bass, I do it simple, much like Nikki does. Less is more.

@@DoubleD72 um, NO.....Nikki Sixx IS Motley Crue!
Love it or hate it, HE alone is responsible for their sound, their early look, obviously for their SONGS which is of course what its all about..........without Sixx there would not have been a Motley Crue, so I am not sure how they would have been "cooler" without him?
That is just a plain SILLY statement.
