it's rock n roll, it doesn't have to be complicated to be kickass. There's millions of bands with over-players on all instruments that drive you nuts. Nikki kicksass!
Nikki Sixx has always been a great bass player in my opinion. He's always been one of the influences that made me want to first start playing bass 31 years ago. He's solid, and he keeps the sound full without over playing.
I’m a guitarist first and bass player maybe 3rd or 4th. I always liked his style because it’s not flashy, but sets the foundation and that’s what I try to do if I’m playing bass.
I've always liked Nikkis style, I play bass and by no stretch I'm I a professional so his easy bass lines help me to grow. Love his Warlocks, I still play one.
I met him a few times. I worked at a convenience store many years ago near his house, and he would pop in occasionally. I started keeping a bass in my car, hoping I could get him to sign it, but never got the chance.
Yes, totally true !! He's a great rock bassist and was always mistreated. Nikki was always 50% Motley Crue, a great wall of bass sound! a great rock songwriter, which we all like.
Now that I remember, if you have a special technique, he usually hooks his little finger of the right hand in a kind of wedge or ring near the bridge, this makes the right hand more firm and balanced the sound with the pick.
Id say hes 35% of motely crüe. He did write a lot of the songs but mick probably had the biggest influence on the band, tommy lee is an amazing drummer, and without Vince Neil it just doesnt feel right. Nikki is a super important part of the band but he couldnt do it without the others.

Yeah, he's a lot better than I thought, actually. His bass is sort of low in the mix, so I think a lot of it isn't even really heard consciously. I actually found this video by searching "nikki sixx bass tone" to see how he does it. It reminds me of Bill Laswell's subsonic bass. It's so "fuzzy" around the edges it's almost invisible. It really works perfectly. It's nice how they finally got some HD quality video in 2016 so you can hear the bass and guitar tones clearly and see how well they play together...shame Vince is doing that mumbling / out-of-breath stuff, though. Shame they never had a real good quality live video at their 80s peak.
Love Nikki's bass lines, simple but direct, effective, supportive for guitar solos, and fresh, sincere. One of my influences, also Leland Sklar (no need for speed nor 'virtuoso moves' to show BIG personality) and Jürgen Dehmel (combining technics, changing times, wise use of silences).
My idol - love it. Great tips, Paul Nikki always throws in a some curveballs to some of his songs. As someone relearning bass, it took forever to get that bridge part of Primal Scream right. Got there
As a bass player trying to find my style and always trying to improve, I really like your format!! My art's school teacher always said "good artists copy, great artists steal"
Nikki sixx is under rated. It took me a long time to really come to that conclusion. I was listening to Motley in the car once and really vibing on it listening to Tommy and Nikki and it clicked. They are not the most technical but they do the job of keeping things going really well. For me a good rhythm section is the engine of the band. That is really all at matters.
