someone was just recently saying they wanted to get an SP404, but that the MPC Live was more appealing. I told them that you can do a lot of what the SP404 is famous for by resampling. But what I really like to do is resample, then pitch up a couple octaves, flatten to pad and pitch back down. With a little EQ to bring back the top end, you get that crunch and aliasing as well
you know some of the old crunch is from recording sped up records and then pitch down to save sample time. maybe your process is sonically very similar?
Wow, I have a live 2 and I needed this video. Thought the new sp was super cool and knew there had to be a way to do something like it on the live. Subscribed!
This video was awesome brother! You are a GAS therapist! It’s funny that I’ve been using my MPC so long so differently than my sp404sx that I really never thought of “stealing” the other’s workflow. Might actually think about cancelling my sp404mk2 preorder after watching this one!🤔🤔 keep up the great work!🙌🏻
Bruh, just walk up into a Guitar Center and auto sample all the expensive synths you’ll never buy. Walk in there like a MFing G with your MPC Live, a midi cable, and an audio cable like you own the damn place. The employees ain’t gonna do shit, they don’t get paid enough.
Great video. You can resample as well with the flattening the pad feature. As you can bounce to sample feature work as well. Try it out and if you would like for me to do a video showing how this work then let me know.
Sweet!! I was exactly thinking about this! And we will probably get this to be recorded as automation in the next update. The force is now able to automate the sub mixes and master bus 👌🏻
This is fun. I had been making finger drummer practice kits, and I've been messing around with how make the non-drum stuff. You've given me a lot ideas to try out! Thanks.
Bro, thanks for the vid! this is so different way of doing the stuff compared to my workflow, truly an eye opener on some. good stuff and nice ideas to try!
This is how i used to get down before the latest update then it started messing with my qlink settings and resetting them as soon as i left the qlink edit screen. Rly bummed me out, I had the beat repeat super dialed in 😂 and it wouldn’t save my settings. I hope they bring that option back in the next update along with the ability to record the live fx on your master
I always use looper to record midi tracks to a sample. You then export directly to a pad. Clear sample for a fresh start or build a layer of sounds using over dub. It’s super quick
Haven't used the looper hardly at all! Can I record midi, change my active tracks, come to the looper, record an audio track(or multiple) , then move back to midi tracks?
@@JorbLovesGear yep, I mainly use it for recording external synths, I play the midi and record different takes with fx etc. the thing I like about looper is you set the bar length and get a nicely timed sample every time. It was something I overlooked for months before stumbling across a RUclips video. Always learning with the mpc. Looper is quite a powerful feature and not much talked about.
Wow i was wondering if you could assign the q links to individual parameters like that…..and the momentary button is a complete GAME CHANGER. Safe to say im feeling something magical happening in my lower region
Oh cheers, nice to see you here! Yeah, the way I feel about the X/Y stuff, it feels like a gimmick until it sounds good, then it's real fun to throw around
I know this is a bit outside of the topic of this video, but as a person looking to add a sampler to my setup, what is the benefit in choosing the mpc over the 404? Especially now that the 404 is so beefed up. For some more context, it won’t be the center of my setup either, that will still be my computer Love ur videos 🤘🏻
If it's *not the center of your set up, you just want the sampler sauce, even the old sp's would work really well. Take audio from your daw, processed through the 404,or 303 even, and right back in. MPC is the choice if it's your main / only way to sample & sequence, but 404 is great as a supplementary vibe-changer
Another Excellent video my friend. I bought the reface cp after your advice. I have a question I was hoping you could answer. On the electric plugin on the mpc there is an option for increasing the release time. Can you recommend or point me in the direction of any pedals that will let me do the same thing to the reface cp. any help greatly appreciated
Ahh cheers! Thats tricky, on the software emulation, you can have a release time, sound can persist after you release a key. On the reface, they emulate the real pianos, which would have dampers come up when a key was released. You can hold the notes down, adjust your velocity, and let the notes decay naturally, the wurli would be quicker than the rhodes. Or a sustain pedal into the reface, which would stop that "dampening" and let them decay. OR reverb can let the note ring out a little more, and that might be all you're looking for!
@@JorbLovesGear ah thanks yes that’s kinda what I wanted to do. So something like the a sustain pedal of efx pedal maybe like the strymon volante think I saw that being used with the reface on Gaz Williams channel. I’ll have a look and see what I can find out. Appreciate you taking the time to reply. Your videos are great keep doing what you do :-)
Maybe I'm missing something here but was wondering when you tried to play the electric piano on the sample page why didn't you just go to resample at that point? It would have allowed you to hear the incoming signal to resample on the fly without the need to play it in as midi first .
I’ve been gassing for the MPC … but I already have an Octatrack & Electribe Sampler 2. Don’t judge me.. I got the later for a very good price because no one wants a salmon pink sampler (I assume)… but I like the idea of moving right away from the computer. I think I just like the option of not always being tethered to a DAW. The freedom the MPC affords is highly desirable. Should I sell what I have for an MPC? … or just save up for one?
Thats tough...octatrack can beat it in a lot of ways, electribe is way more straightforward, groovebox . If you can get along with the octatrack, no need, i think. Pretty redundant, I believe.
I reckon some of this can be a little less cumbersome if you use the looper, and then you can get a perfect loop like the sp 555. I've never used the SPs but you can tell I've done some research out of jealousy 😅. Exporting to a pad on a program is a still a thing. You have to then add that pad to the start of the sequence though which is still a bit of a pain but we can't have it all!

@@LaymensLament exactly the same process!
Try adding a decimator in the drum fx window to about 2 -2.7 and then flat the sample This will add even more crunch
Great stuff. I love the idea of "emulation" of one device within another, it also shows how beefy and versatile the MPCs are.
Thank you! Thinking of other ways I can "steal the vibe" 😁
