I imported Dragon Ball GT Final Bout in 8th grade (1999) and my friends and I thought it was so amazing to finally have a Dragon Ball game to play! Then I got this for Christmas that year and holy hell..... I was blown away. To me, it really felt like I was playing the show! I had no walk-through or anything but I tried to play the game story as close to the show as I could. It's too bad that of the 2 PS1 games they brought to the US, this wasn't one of them as I personally think it was the best!
Awsome👍 I did the same thing in 8th grade, but in 1997. For Christmas of 97 my Grandma bought me a PlayStation one that played both U.S and Japanese games without an emulator (Electronic Gaming Monthly😁.) She also bought me Dragonball Final Bout and Ultimate Battle 22 (both imports) and they were my first Dragonball games and they was GREAT! No guide books either, just the instruction book they came with. In Spring of 1999 she bought me Legend and I loved the hell out of that game. It was so cool showing my friends Ultimate Battle 22 and Legend since you couldn't buy them in the U.S. I was the cool kid at school💯
Late response but Electronics Boutique and Gamestop(Babbages) both sold imports briefly in the late 90’s and early 2k. I had a very large import Saturn collection and a decent size ps1 import collection just from those stores. I remember picking up Dracula X Nocturne in the Moonlight and Radiant Silvergun for 9.99 a piece.
I like that this game doesn't use a typical health system. It's great cause it gives a more push and pull feel. It's so sad that despite how popular the series is that this game pretty much faded into obscurity despite it being one of the best games in the franchise easily in the top five.
Only issue is, the only way to deal damage if not going about the game caring about the points, is to see the same super attack animations over and over again. And they all took forever. Still one of my favorite DBZ games, but that particular part was a problem for me, even back then.
@@bradydavis5791i disagree, this game was more cinematic and DBZ like than any other game at the time. It's a shame that there are no games with these mechanics so innovative for their time, think about it for a moment, this game is from the era of Playstation 1, 1996, a 3v3 fighting game where the characters fight simultaneously, it still amazes me today to see something like this for that time, it is exciting to be playing and see in the background another 4 players fight, I think the closest thing to this was Super Smash Brothers from n64 (and we know how good that franchise has been for now). Until budokai arrived there were no dragon ball games as good as this, yes, this game is not perfect, if you hold X all the time there is literally no way to lose in a 1v1, and there is no gameplay difference, all the characters are played the same, the difference is the sprites, the size of the sprites that affect the hitboxes, and the special by winning the power battle balance. Even so, the amount of fun I have with this game is absurd, I have always imagined how it would be a review of these mechanics in today's video game systems, how it will be to take these ideas and polish them, how cool would the multiplayer be, get more players? 6v6 team battle? It would be great if it could expand the movements, the specials and the attacks, be able to break defenses or add evasion mechanics, add better diverse and destructible battlefield, add new ways to move in the battlefield, make new combos, and holy shit! I keep thinking about the endless possibilities!. If no videogame company does something about it, in the next few years I will do videogame design courses, I will use a simple but efficient graphic engine that can handle 2d sprites (I'm an artist so I could draw my own sprites), and 3D elements, and make a remake of this jewel.
I was in high school when this came out. Played nonstop for years. It is my number one favorite back in that era of Dragon Ball games. Amount of characters available was super solid. Felt like I was watching an anime while playing. Would love to see a remake with today's graphics.
I remember in 2001, I modded my PS1 to be able to play this game. I was the only one in my town to have it. I had to special order it and affix a spring to the console to keep the disc spinning. This game was way ahead of its time

The first day I bought this game, I finished more than 23 times. This kind of fast and brutal gameplay made fall in love. I would completely wreck my friends in this game because they didn’t know you could super dash out of combos....I was banned from playing as SS Man and super Buu because I destroyed them the fastest using those characters.......but they just didn’t know how to play the game. Great times!
