Coming soon! Although might be 2 or 3 weeks yet as I have a big job coming starts mid next week....not sure I can do my studio tour in time as I want to make it good and not rush it. Will do a few episodes before to keep you all happy in the meanwhile....but it IS definitely coming!!!
@@DarrenMostyn Good morning Darren. Here is a suggestion. Bring one guest to your studio like Cullen Kelly and share a video of your studio tour and discuss some critical elements of color grading together in your studio. This will break the ice and the entire world would rush to watch your videos and you will hit 100K in no time. Have a LOVELY day!!!!
Good Morning Darren. Great videos. I've been working on my first RUclips videos last 10 months. Colour grading and correction is still new to me. Couple of queries. Do you have a video that explains it all and the order to do it in for someone with zero knowledge like me? Also should it be done just before rendering once edits and audio are optimised. Finally I have an old Asus 6 years old 16Gb RAM i7 chip and Nvidia 920 graphics, could you recommend the minimum hardware to handle what you do e.g MC mini ? Or Macbook pro ? And the amount of RAM and cores you'd recommend. Thanks for reading. Just some feedback you have a great relaxed style of delivery.
This is an excellent video, Darren. When filming slightly longer takes outdoors the fluctuation in light levels can be a great problem due to passing clouds. This tutorial would be great help in correcting changes in exposures. A big thank you.
@@DarrenMostyn This kind of content is gold... for beginners and colorist with experience. Short videos explaining some things or fixes, that no one do or dont know how to do it. Keep it going.
This is exactly what I have been searching for. Thank you so very much for your clear teaching. Thank you! My new travel camera was set to automatic exposure. Every time I moved my arms it drastically changed the exposure of clip. This worked so well. Many thanks!
Brilliant - as usual - big problem for us here in Hawaii… have to deal with it all the time… couldn’t figure out how to use the stabilizer. Came up with a little workaround… would split the clip grade each side then put a long dissolve between them… Mahalo again Darren
Incredibly helpful! I’m already using your “best node tree” so am adding a color stabilization node after the first set of parallel nodes, and then using your TRIM node to keyframe any manual adjustments to it in the color page right after. Your excellent videos have been indispensable in helping me navigate the steep learning curve of getting up to speed editing professional quality video. Now I need to send a stern email to my twitchy cameraman who’s creating all these issues for me to fix in post. Oh wait… that’s me. 😅
Great vid, Darren! Yeah I think we would like a vlog style "in your life" video. Following your latest work grading a documentary for Channel 5 I would be interested to learn on how you work with multicam clips inside resolve or coming from other nle's, also it would be very interesting if you were allowed to take us on a deep dive showing how you graded this particular documentary, node structure, color management etc.
Hi Lefty. Image rights are always the issue with deep dives. Its something I want to do...working on it. Most of my day is spent in dark room not moving much so the 'vlog' element is narrow...it wont be 'Casey Neistat' put it that way, but certainly looking to vary the content a bit! Thanks for your input as always.
Love the new angle and look! Thanks for this, had no idea about colour stabiliser and immediately have a shot I can use it on. In general, since you’re asking, I find the colour space discussions really helpful and overlooked by most people discussing colour in DR. I personally have questions about getting the most out of non-pro displays (in my case a PD3200U) in terms of DR settings and display modes (Rec709 vs sRGB). There are a million ‘grading’ tutorials but not so many guides addressing correct setup of the ‘boring stuff’. Cheers!
Agreed… and specifically what settings would you use for DJI drone footage… color space gamma etc… very confusing, when i try various combinations i get some pretty startling results… ha ha
Thanks for the tip. I sometimes forget to take my cam out of aperture or shutter priority. Was able to save a few shots.

Amazing! I'm a total newbie and was trying to get my GoPro footage corrected clip by clip and using the color wheels and Waveframes. It was tedious to say the least. With your method I can select the "worst" exposure clips and correct them all in minute. Only downside is the huge watermark in the FREE version. That's a bummer.
Really interesting - the workings of this particular OFX is not one that is evident - after the analyzing , having to then press play to have it work, is not something that anyone would know without either reading up on it ( somewhere ) or watching this fine tutorial. So bonus right there. The lens looks great. I understand the appeal for people that want to see your rig. I am not a fan of equipment or product videos. But if I start to think about purchasing something then I like them. So although I don't care for them, I can see why people do and people make them. So I vote for the vlogging of your day, I would find that interesting to watch your day over just drooling over your great rig. This collection of OFX tutorials is absolutely great. Grouped together in a playlist will be my goto, even as a refresher on ones that I know. Thanks so much.
Hi Jim. Agreed its not intuitive that once it has PLAYED it is then fixed. Also, pressing the "live region analyze" all the time to reset is slightly confusing/annoying but it works if you get the right region. The studio tour is because people want to see it (I did a community check and it was my biggest response ever)....Im happy to show and also its a bit different...let's see what my subs say...if it flops I'll never do again, if people like it then Im happy to do more insights beyond software. It wont turn into 'the kardashians' don't worry! Im really pleased with the OFX collection too and that was partly down to your idea in the first place...I've also done a dedicated OFX playlist here ruclips.net/p/PL6VNHhfsVYJaF_Hv-I23768MnVvHux1VE I'll try not to start doing lots of b roll making coffee etc but also happy to let people know a bit more about what being a colourist day to day can be like! Always appreciate your input Jim. Keep well...Darren
Amazing, used it for an interview where it was lit by a sun on a cloudy windy day, therefore a lot of exposure changes and also on an interview where I left WB on auto and it kept messing around with green values. Worked like a charm.
Great video Darren, this OFX will definitely save me time key-framing exposure. New lens looks fab, looking forward to your studio you’re mate! Hope your ribs are healing up just dandy. 😎👍🏼
Ok i always i ignored this plugin assuming it could be related with reel to file conversion, now ive got a strong idea to go and explore it. Thank you so much Darren 🙂
Wow this will come in handy. My son is just getting to grips with his drone and although I’ve told him to manually expose, he has a few times forgot. Going to try it out with this now. Lens looks good too.
Glad was helpful to the whole family! I think I like the lens too....will stick to the 35mm for my usual intros but its passing my first tests. All the best, darren.
I would like to Thank you Darren for making this tutorial ! its exactly what i needed. I use to have painful experience in Premiere Pro with this subject (adding adjustment layer to balance the dark area and highlights manually keying on moving shots ) and Resolve is just couple clicks away and your done.
Thank you so much. I had horrible shots and kept saying it's ok for now, for the next video I will learn not to use Auto. But today I broke down and have to fix what I already shot. Couldn't edit anymore looking at all those exposure changes.
I just did a test and it's like magic. It works! I searched before coming here and people even on the Blackmagic forum were saying it is not easy. You have to key frame stuff and it's a lot of work and not worth it. Well I did it in few seconds and it worked. I even used the entire frame and that's good enough for me. Thank you.
Hi Darren. Thanks for another fantastic tip. This is going to be a great help, just brilliant Thanks again Darren, also, looking forward to your studio tour
Many thanks Darren, great stuff. When it comes to new features I fall into the age category of too old to change, but too scared not too. So very useful. New lens looks great BTW, nice DOF.
Great effect. I had only wished I knew about it when I edited footage for a wedding video years and years ago. (I've known about it for a while now, but after the fact for that particular video) - nice video, Darren!
Thanks for showing us this feature in Resolve Darren! Last week i bought the DJI Mini 3 drone. I have done an orbit and during this orbit exposure changed and white balance. I corrected the exposure and white balance on one part of the clip but it got messed up later. Will try if this effect fixes the issue i am facing now.
Thanks for another great video! Always looking forward to them :) A whole day of being you would be nice! Also, any plans on doing any Fusion tutorials? Would also love to see your take on how you approach noise reduction.
Considering the 'day in life of' but might be a basic version first whilst I get accustomed to exposing myself to RUclips and get used to filming off a tripod - Im not a DP...definitely POST production side - but lets dip my toes in first - think it might be fun!! No plans to do Fusion at present, as there are many good channels out there. I don't use it enough (or as much as I edit and grade in Resolve) so sticking to real world scenarios and giving you the best I can. I like to give you real world scenarios and not just explore something I can make a video on. Thanks for sticking with me anyway. Thanks Roberto.
That's nice... would have been nice to have white balance in the tut as well because outdoor shots can often shift between full sun and clouds on partly cloudy days. The WB stabilizer seems much more sensitive and difficult to get right than the exposure.
Awesome addition. Thank you Darren! definitely something to keep in mind. Could you elaborate a little more why possible gain use for scene referred and offset for display referred. pls and thank you.
they are probably the closest to exposure control - if in log space, before rec709, or camera colour space (arri, red etc) then gain may give better results than offset. In this scenario clips have been brought into REC709 space (display) in the node tree and so Offset likely best choice, but always try them both and see what works for you. Hope that helps.
Will be a couple of weeks now - its a long one to make and I'm booked quite heavy. I do have a new one out tomorrow, but the studio tour needs time as it will be slightly different style. Definitely happening though! Thanks Dakota.
Thanks for this Darren. Most of my work that I use resolve for is rugby matches where I’m shooting for training purposes rather than cinematic excellence. However, there’s no need to settle for mediocrity, so that episode was really interesting. I wonder how much processing power would be required to correct a half of rugby at a time? Keep up the good work. I look forward to your studio tour. Let’s see some examples of the kit in action please.
Great topic! I don't think it's necessary to play through the clip to apply the affect. As soon as you click "Live Region Analysis" the affect is instant based on the selected frame. You can then tweak the settings and they will be immediately reflected. At least in 18.6
Thank you for the video, as always, informative and straight to the point. I'd be curious to see the studio video in any format, and maybe as a second video, a part timelapse, part snippets of your (screen) of your normal workday with commentary, just as a snapshot of what everything happens during the day and what is the approximate breakdown of time expenditure, including the "boring" parts like emails, calls with clients, etc (contractual secrecy permitting).
Thanks Milan. Trying to get something like that yes. Although most of the day is just sitting at the suite in the dark....doesn't make for amazing viewing! Working on it though. Its hard to get clearance at pre - release on footage though.
This is crazy cool. I have been doing it the hard way for a couple years with lousy results... I just tried this out again with 5 different pieces of drone vids and a few forest shots. WowWWww! works gr*8 Thanks again n again. p.s. U don't need to reply. It must be so much to try n reply to each one …. no need. !!! love the content. keep doing what you do. Maybe do a video on something that you like to film yourself. Short film of how you prepare for a job perhaps? or maybe how you like to make your tea?... Something you love to do... .. (maybe use that new lens) and see how you do grading it for everyone. Start to finish of your entire process. Beginning to end!... ???? >>???
Thanks once more for an excellent video, I had no idea that colour stabiliser even existed! (…maybe is was simply Davinci’s incorrect spelling that threw me)
Hi Darren, thank you for great tip and video. Could you please make a similar one for setting the correct exposure using false color plugin, especially with low light conditions such as night shots or dark interior scenes
Hello Darren! Thank you for your work! Could you tell us more about Nobe Omni Skopes? how to make it work well with a laptop? How can I do this so that the picker for sampling with Davinci is available? So that I can also move the poker across the screen during the bachelorette party and it will be displayed on the scale in Omni? I really like the devices inside the Davinci. but it’s very frustrating that you can’t customize it(
This is great! Wondering if there is access to any curve information that it produces? If i wanted to go in and manual adjust, or just smooth the adjustments.
Hey Darren, GLOW! How about a deeper dive into this powerful, yet very tricky tool? Glow is very often used to emulate the cinematic feel, but it's very hard to get right. There are many ways to use GLOW, and I feel many of us only just scratch the surface. Is that something that you could do?
Hey that was awesome ,but can you help me with this scenario? So i filmed myself in a room with a window so i had some minor exposure changes in the background but the problem is that the A-roll isnt a single clip and it is actually multiple clips with cuts… how can can i make the colors and exposure even in the whole timeline?
Hey Darren, was wondering if you'd consider doing a video about Color Management options. Like what are the differences between selecting Davinci YRGB Color Managed versus ACES in project settings, versus using a CST node. This is something that I've never been able to wrap my head around.
Hi Darren. Thanks for the tutorial. Amazing tip! I noticed the sky is still overexposed at the beginning. Is there a way to fix it so its exposure is consistent too like the foreground?
Hi, thank you so much for this video!! Just one question, when you press PLAY to apply the effect, it seems to go pretty quickly on your clip, but I guess that's because it's a short clip... I've applied it to an 8 minute long clip, and assuming I must wait 8 minutes for it to play the whole thing? Is there a way to speed this up?
Thanks for sharing this helpful technique! May I know what software you use for making an orange circular highlighter and magnifying the circular area, please?
That you for another great video. Do you know if it is possible to track an object moving on the frame in order to correct for white balance? For example a bride walking left to right while the white balance is changing. Is there a way to track the white of the dress?
Awesome video Darren as usual! This is a tool which in my opinion is really helpful. For the studio tour, i'm wondering if you have an utlra studio extreme 3 in the suite. If so, it would be great to talk a bit about how you use it in your workflow.🙌
In my case it is adding a incredible amount of contrast and saturation in some moments (even trying with gain instead of offset).. Don't know why. I used the dji lut for the dji mavic 3 pro as you showed in another video... Should I use the other method (color management environment) instead and apply the color stabilizer again?
Thanks for the video! I recently tried to use this OFX but was having troubles. After watching your video, I realize I was making it way more complicated than I needed to! Thank you for the simple breakdown! I'm a little muddy on when to use offset vs gain when trying to adjust exposure (in general, not just in this plugin). Sometimes I can look at the waveform and get some clues that way, but I've heard opposing opinions on the matter, and I'm wondering if you could go more in-depth on the subject? Thank you as always!
Re: Gear tour. I'd like to know what your preferred hardware is for each DR "Page". More directly, are today's computers more or less efficient than the DR hardwired control-panels? To what extent can the many control gadgets on the market help or hinder efficiency. What does the future hold for DR, i.e. is there gear that you would like to have but don't? Thanks for this great post, and the opportunity to make this request.
@@jannisnewiadomsky you really think it 'wont take long' to Vlog for first time...editing etc. It will be a long process believe me - there will be tons of footage. But, yes, still considering it - weighing up time vs value at the moment. Thanks anyway. Glad to know you would watch!
More because it is my first one and I am NOT a DP !! It takes much longer if you dont do this regularly. Im really looking forward to doing it though and it WILL happen. I think early to Mid March to be realistic!
Hi Darren, Tried your technique on some of my drone shots. Love the keyboard shortcuts. Could not figure out the APPLY. Can you provide some more details? Also, noticed the Captured Analysis Valiues never change after multiple passes. What am I doing wrong?
in theory yes....but those slower changes often can be done with keyframes....the quick changes are the harder ones to fix manually. Of course this only works clip at a a time.
Hey Darren... another great one! This is a little off topic. In Fusion... the different modules have different input markers, blue, green and gray. Do the colors represent different layers?
Nice tutorial. Maybe adding the 'color stabilizer‘ into the title can help more people find the video since I happened to see the video when I need to know the color stabilizer.
did you search color stabilizer and it appeared ? I would imagine most people dont know the tool to search for to fix the problem - hence the tutorial - Im counting on people searching for "how to fix exposure changes" more than color stablizer
Why didn't I watch this earlier... 😅 Great tip thanks! I was wondering though, when you have a more complex nod tree where would you apply this effect? Especially, would you put it at the end on the final look or is it beter before the CST but after correction?
Boris flicker is not really for this problem I thought. Ive used flicker which is very good but would not have thought to use here...never tried TBH. Might try - I have all the Boris, Mocha and Sapphire FX

That's nice... would have been nice to have white balance in the tut as well because outdoor shots can often shift between full sun and clouds on partly cloudy days. The WB stabilizer seems much more sensitive and difficult to get right than the exposure.
Sounds like you know how to use it already. Just making the tool aware to people really.
Great content as always Darren!
Much appreciated! Thank you
Can't wait for the studio tour!
Will be a couple of weeks now - its a long one to make and I'm booked quite heavy. I do have a new one out tomorrow, but the studio tour needs time as it will be slightly different style. Definitely happening though! Thanks Dakota.
@@DarrenMostyn Love it! Love your content.
I wish I knew about this earlier, I have a few issues like this when filming golf courses. and especially when filming indoors
(…maybe is was simply Davinci’s incorrect spelling that threw me)
Setup looking sweet!!
Thank Adam - FULL in-depth look at every bit of kit in a few weeks time.
That's soooo useful! Thank you so much! Please keep doing such tips,, and of course the vlog is interesting one :) Please do!
Thank you! looking into it!
Hi Darren, thank you for great tip and video. Could you please make a similar one for setting the correct exposure using false color plugin, especially with low light conditions such as night shots or dark interior scenes
Great suggestion!
I'm not sure but the captured analysis value slider will help make adjustments
Thank you as always a great bit of information
you are most welcome Sir
Hey Darren, GLOW! How about a deeper dive into this powerful, yet very tricky tool?
Glow is very often used to emulate the cinematic feel, but it's very hard to get right. There are many ways to use GLOW, and I feel many of us only just scratch the surface.
Is that something that you could do?
Maybe yes. Thanks for idea.
Thanks for a great tip. Any advice on using rec709 gamma 2.4 vs 2.2? I’ve seen advice that for web work 2.2 gives more accurate results. Thoughts?
2.2 is correct for web. Thanks
@@DarrenMostyn thank you!
Hey Darren, was wondering if you'd consider doing a video about Color Management options. Like what are the differences between selecting Davinci YRGB Color Managed versus ACES in project settings, versus using a CST node. This is something that I've never been able to wrap my head around.
Its on my list, has been for a while...not an easy episode!
@Darren Mostyn I can imagine! Haha no pressure. I can always do the research myself, I just have more fun learning from you 😋
OK, well there's the inspiration for me to do it right there!
Thanks again, pal. Great, great, great vídeo. Are you planning a green screen tuto? Will be also much appreciated.
Hi Enrique. Thanks, no Im not planning a green screen episode as I dont have one.
Thanks for the video! Where did you pull the nodes from? I can’t find them in the list…
Thanks for sharing this helpful technique! May I know what software you use for making an orange circular highlighter and magnifying the circular area, please?
Wow... one more reason Resolve is years ahead of other NLE's. Thanks!
That you for another great video. Do you know if it is possible to track an object moving on the frame in order to correct for white balance? For example a bride walking left to right while the white balance is changing. Is there a way to track the white of the dress?
yes, you can use the fx tracker to add points. hope that helps.
Awesome video Darren as usual! This is a tool which in my opinion is really helpful. For the studio tour, i'm wondering if you have an utlra studio extreme 3 in the suite. If so, it would be great to talk a bit about how you use it in your workflow.🙌
I have Ultrastudio 4K rack mount. Just trying to change that but hard to get stock at the moment..! Will talk about in my workflow yes.
In my case it is adding a incredible amount of contrast and saturation in some moments (even trying with gain instead of offset).. Don't know why. I used the dji lut for the dji mavic 3 pro as you showed in another video... Should I use the other method (color management environment) instead and apply the color stabilizer again?
Fantastic tip! Thanks 👍
No problem!
I need this, time to buy studio. I have big issues with auto iso and exposure changes flying drones indoors
Experiment. Its not 100% good all the time but good more than bad.
@@DarrenMostyn Good to know my "guess and check" method is endorsed by a pro, haha!
It was helpful! Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Thx for the tip. Didn’t know this was in resolve.
welcome Ant!
Great video 🔥🔥🔥
Glad you enjoyed Jacko. Spread the link to your friends ... its such an easy fix for people.
Thanks Glen. All noted!
VLOG would be awesome ! With as much detail as possible ! thanks already !
still considering it - never done it before.
My thought would be that it may not take as long as a planed video (for you) and the real fans wills watch it anyways 🔥😊
@@jannisnewiadomsky you really think it 'wont take long' to Vlog for first time...editing etc. It will be a long process believe me - there will be tons of footage. But, yes, still considering it - weighing up time vs value at the moment. Thanks anyway. Glad to know you would watch!
I see that 😅😂 I appriciate generally how much time and quality you are putting into your content !
CAV us a manual slider to change so wont change until you change it. It just happens...you dont have to actually APPLY it
Thanks, it was really useful!
Glad it was helpful Rokas. thank you.
Fantastic tip! I assume the same technique could work to adjust exposure that changes shot to shot from cloud cover?
in theory yes....but those slower changes often can be done with keyframes....the quick changes are the harder ones to fix manually. Of course this only works clip at a a time.
Fantastic. Thank you.
Thank you so much for this!
Glad it was helpful!
I would love to know which OUTPUT / Playback device you are using. Maybe one of the blackmagic decklink ?
Sure.
Thanks! Can make good use of this.
Glad to hear Paul.
Hey Darren... another great one! This is a little off topic. In Fusion... the different modules have different input markers, blue, green and gray. Do the colors represent different layers?
no, different inputs and outputs and keys etc
Storage management would be interesting !
OK
Dear Darren, do you have any suggestions on a free software to color stabilize for us who can't afford DaVinci Resolve Studio? Thank you so much =)
No I dont sorry. Ive been on Resolve for 13 years and it works great. It will be the best few hundred pounds you invest in!
I love this!!!
Why didn't I watch this earlier... 😅 Great tip thanks! I was wondering though, when you have a more complex nod tree where would you apply this effect? Especially, would you put it at the end on the final look or is it beter before the CST but after correction?
it can go anywhere but I suggest before the end CST and after an initial balance of your shots.
@@DarrenMostyn Great thanks a lot! 😊
Amazing, thanks!
Glad you like it!
You are a life saver!
thanks adam
Auviously the screens would be interesting to know about.
Noted
Very cool effect. I’ve been using Boris Flicker Fixer. How does this compare?
Boris flicker is not really for this problem I thought. Ive used flicker which is very good but would not have thought to use here...never tried TBH. Might try - I have all the Boris, Mocha and Sapphire FX
@@DarrenMostyn This has been the go to tool for iris fixes in Avid, which is where most of my series work is done. I have it in DaVinci, but haven’t tried it yet.
@@vidcut1 OK, look forward to trying it on this very clip tomorrow!! Thank you for enlightening me.
@@DarrenMostyn The trick is to open up the frame count to a greater number than the duration of the iris fix. Normally between 5 & 15 frms. Good testing. Looking forward to your feedback!
