Has anyone noticed they had light refraction in the gunbarrel for OHMSS and Diamonds are forever, but didn't bring anything like that back until Goldeneye? Also, love the use of synth in OHMSS and Goldeneye!
Brosnan was the best he was never cheesy like the other ones were. there was no flailing of the arms no stupid posing crouches just a difinitive cold turn that said "your dead". perfection to my eyes.
For your eyes only is the best one kicking some awesome beats to it.It's the only gun barrel sequence that sends chills down my spine and I love to crank it up.
License to kill was the absolute best, Not only the music is the best but Dalton definitely had the badass swagger walk down to perfection whilst still being calm and serious.
Very interesting to hear all the different orchestrations -- and the different keys the theme is played in. Plus, of course, the difference in the figures over the years.
When you really think about it, its funny how it has basically looked the same since '62 until now. There's few movie franchises to compare it to, but keeping the same opening sequence for 50 yrs is a surprisingly well grounded tradition. It's even weirder looking at it the other way around. I don't suspect they knew any of this during the filming of Dr. No - no one would've suspected that they would lay down the formula for 50 yrs of Bond films, such as the gun barrel and pre-title sequences.
I love the air of menace from Licence to Kill's gunbarrel music seeing as it is a dark film. And I have always adored the Goldeneye opening. All of these are great, I just wish Quantum of Solace hadn't waited till the end for theirs.
Dalton was the best bond imo - professional, suave, and just the right bit of psychotic. Pierce Brosnan was also very good, but his movies were kinda bad, except for GoldenEye, which is up there in terms of best Bonds.
I don't know why, but I love the For Your Eyes Only (1981) version of the theme. Much more energetic with the subtle strings in the back and the full-powered brass section.
I was just a young kid and my mother would take me to the Bond movies, I was just so overwhelmed with Goldfinger, seeing a mountain of gold in Fort Knox , Odd Job crushing a golf ball , a car with a tracking radar, a laser that almost cut Bond in half, a pilot named Pussy Galore, now I’m 71 years old, and to this day I can’t believed they crushed a new Lincoln Continental, I about fell out of my seat ,
tomorrow never dies - best sounding gunshot! i really hope we get the traditional sequence again for skyfall and AT THE BEGINNING... it really gets you in the right mood for a bond movie
I like Brosnan's pose the most though. That, and the Goldeneye gunbarrel's radical rearrangement of the theme, make it my personal favorite, with Dalton's LTK in a close second.
I will concede that my favourite gunbarrel music (LALD, FYEO, LTK, GE to name perhaps the most punctuated examples) is when the arrangement is radically unorthodox compared to the original Bond theme recording.
Although I'm sure every actor who played Bond has their strengths, and props to Connery for being the original, but Pierce Brosnan will always be Bond to me.
Yes, DAF gunbarrel theme could be the most iconic sounding version, with all the others being seen as ingenious variations. Each one enjoyably merits a comparative assessment.
He's not always "ticked off", as you put it. He's edgy, grim and focused. He's exactly what you'd expect a super-secret spy who kills alot of people to be. I think he's the most modern, and the most realistic of all the James Bonds.
I don't understand why they needed the stuntman to do the gun-barrel for so long. The probably would have saved more money during the first few movies if they just had the actor do it.
+superspy6 Connery did 5 Bond films between 1962 and 1967. They could have easily incorporated Connery into the gunbarrel during any of those films or did it with Lazenby during OHMSS or Connery again during Diamonds are Forever. Instead they waited till Moore for Live and Let Die, despite the fact that Moore had the worst gunbarrel stance out of any of the Bond actors or stuntmen. I'm just saying it could have been done alot earlier than it was.
Godzilla52 You do know that the stunt double only did up to Goldfinger, Connery took over for Thunderball and You only live twice, Lazenby did his gunbarrel and then they used the Connery gunbarrel for Diamonds are forever.
To answer your question, Bob Simmons was a stunt co-ordinator for the early james bond movies and choreographed most of the fights during the Sean Connery era. He is best known for the opening in thunderball when Bond sends his condolenses to a widow by punching her out and when Bond pulls off the veil, it is a man. That man is Bob Simmons
Dalton was consider to be the perfect bond character cause of his style though Sean will always be consider bond being the first Albert broccoli actually liked Dalton
I remember seeing a documentary on it once. A cameraman came up and was like, "Wouldn't it be cool if we got a scene with Bond shooting a villain through the eyes of the villains gun." And that's how it came about. They took a pinhole camera and put it through the barrel of a .357 if I'm not mistaken.
First 3 were done by stuntman Bob Simmons. Connery TOTALLY nailed it when he first did it in Thunderball. He was the only Bond who did the spin as if he didn't know the shooter was there until the last split second......with all respect to the other Bonds, they did the spin so robotically as to make you think they knew the shooter was there 5 min. before. Dalton was pretty good.
My favorites : 05:15 : For your eyes only (I love the guitar sound) 07:44 : Tomorrow never Dies (Absolutely class and no shitty effect in the sound or visual effect) 09:07 : Quantum of Solace (Because even in the ending, gunbarrel works again)
My favorite gunbarrel sequence was from For Your Eyes Only. The best gunbarrel music ever! I noticed the same film of Bond walking then turning and firing his gun would be used in 2 or 3 movies. The gunbarrel graphic and music would differ between films but was the same footage of the actor. I always thought they filmed a new sequence with actor on every film but I can see now I've been mistaken.
@@NeighborModder Whether you think Moore was the true 007 or not, the fact is that he was 46 when he debuted in Live and Let Die, and finished with a View to Kill when he was 58. By the end of the 70’s, he was starting to show his age around the early 80’s and his light-hearted slapstick Bond was turning the series into a Carry On parody. If anyone was the closest to looking like Bond, it’s Timothy Dalton. He read the novels to understand the character and played it straight.
Never say never again was produced by another film company... so MGM and Albert Broccoli never sold the Gunbarrel intro and main James Bond 007 theme. It's a shame because it was a good movie
“Never say never again gun barrel sequence” Did you even watch the bloody film? And on top of that the film was absolutely terrible, possibly the worst bond film ever.
thanks for letting me know, don't even really remember.Saw "Never Say Never Again" when released in theatre when I was in 5th grade back in late '83.May of last saw that movie probably during the late 1980's on network tv when I was in HS.
Great collection! Thanks for taking the time. Funny how it has changed over the years. IMHO, here's the list of "best" Bonds: 1- Connery (BOSS) 2- Craig (BAD ASS) 3- Moore (ELEGANT) 4- Brosnan (FOCUSED). Can't wait for Sky Fall! Thanks again!
It fits directly into the pre-credits sequence, as sort of an introduction to the new Bond (and a new philosophy of what a Bond film is). It's Bond finishing off a kill that makes him a full-fledged agent, so I guess he doesn't get the old school gunbarrel sequence yet. I do think the CGI blood looked pretty dodgy.
My ranking as it stands is Connery, Dalton, Brosnan, Moore, Craig and (sorry George I still love you) Lazenby. Brosnan was the 90’s Bond, I would have loved to see Dalton do (especially as it was written with him in mind) Goldeneye, but honestly I wouldn’t want Pierce gone either because he’s so good in that film. Both incredible in the role, all of them are!
i think Pierce Brosnans Goldeneye one was one the iconic moments of his tenure as bond and is one of my two favourites along with Casino Royales use of the sequence as a part of the film.
Connery didn't start doing the gun barrel sequence until Thunderball. The previous three sequences were done by stuntman Bob Simmons, who worked on the films from Dr. No until either A View to A Kill or The Living Daylights.
...And you already know that he's a badass. Seriously, it's wicked how they managed to establish a character moment SO early in the movie. Before even the credits roll, lol. Now it's kinda obvious, but still. Wow :)
I thought in the 60's through 70's, I noticed they had a looked a little old, i.e, the gunbarrels look like what they were in the real theateres, meaning these gunbarrels looked like they were not restored back then.
Watching them all back to back you have to admire how quick a shot Brosnan is. He's more or less already shooting as he turns, it's impressive!
Has anyone noticed they had light refraction in the gunbarrel for OHMSS and Diamonds are forever, but didn't bring anything like that back until Goldeneye? Also, love the use of synth in OHMSS and Goldeneye!
Tim is underrated... I like his Bond a lot.
Brosnan was the best he was never cheesy like the other ones were. there was no flailing of the arms no stupid posing crouches just a difinitive cold turn that said "your dead". perfection to my eyes.
"For your eyes only" 's theme sounded epic.
My favourite. Bill Conti's scores defined the late 70s and early 80s
My favourites are Moonraker, Octopussy and The Living Daylights.
Lazenby the best. That perfect drop to one knee. Lazenby one of my favorite Bonds and OHMSS my fav Bond film.
My favourite is Lazenby in OHMSS, his outline is very tall and lean and I like the way he drops down onto one knee before firing...very original!!
Listening to this, I never realized how much they played with the orchestration of the theme from movie to movie.
For your eyes only is the best one kicking some awesome beats to it.It's the only gun barrel sequence that sends chills down my spine and I love to crank it up.

George Lazenby did a tremendous job in On Her Majesty's Secret Service!

Brosnan's is just so smooth. he does a quick, and swift turn and BAM! he doesnt squat or jump. just a turn and BAM!
"The Living Daylights" is my second favorite Bond Flick, so no you aren't the only one.
I couldn't stand Timothy Dalton as Bond. And we only got two movies out of him! They should have just let Rodger Moore finish out the 80s

Dalton never got the credit he deserved
Dalton was the best bond imo - professional, suave, and just the right bit of psychotic. Pierce Brosnan was also very good, but his movies were kinda bad, except for GoldenEye, which is up there in terms of best Bonds.
I was thinking Dalton had best shooting style too. Brosnan seemed like a robot after his.
Thanks for providing an HD version of these! That little jump in "Connery's" intros hilarious.
I don't know why, but I love the For Your Eyes Only (1981) version of the theme. Much more energetic with the subtle strings in the back and the full-powered brass section.
My Fav Bond is Timothy Dalton!
Craig walks insanely fast.
My fav gunbarrels were all Brosnan. Perfect form. Standing straight, sa'll good.
In my books, Dalton nails it.
Mine, Brosnan
Mine Connery and Moore.
Brosnan was the best. It was so casual, and strong which perfectly encompass Bond's personality. The kneeling was too much.
I absolutely agree

I loved Pierce Brosnan as James Bond
sad thing in the years 1997, 1999, and 2002, bond was beaten twice by Austin Powers and only won once in the spy movie category.
Fun fact: Skyfall has the Gunbarrel at the end of the movie, instead of the beginning.

Dalton and Lazenby are awesome! I sometimes wonder why such good James Bonds would do the fewest Bond films. If only Lazenby could have stuck around.
The problem is in this case that there would be no Sir Roger Moore Bond movies
Nothing better than the opening gun barrel! Always gets the adrenaline going for a great ride!!
8:56 they got the rifling of a gun barrel right. The way his suit jacket flaps when he turns is just plain awe inspiring.
