I noticed this while watching RPM. When you're a kid you watch Power Rangers for the powers and the zords while the people stuff just gets in the way most of the time. But when you're older the ranger side of things is just really a supplement to flush out the more normal things in the show. Its amazing how a series aimed mostly at kids can have people both young and old enjoy it for so long.

Bryan Suminski this is a problem westernized shows have, their was never a attempt to mix "fantasy and reality" that has ended the same way as japan has done with Anime and Super Sentai. In super Sentai the actual "powers and zords" are tied to the story itself and are designed to be the "limit break" the characters need in the midst of danger be it physical or emotional. In Western shows "the powers and zords" are the entire point of the story and the humanity of the show gets thrown to the side because "gotta sell them toys b itch, whose gonna care about a kids show LOL." It is why anything "cartoonish or less realistic" will never be taken seriously.

Bryan Suminski You got that right. *Sigh!* I wish that Jonathan Tzachor wasn't such a mentally-retarded ass-hat when he was put in charge of handling Megaforce/Super Megaforce as the executive producer and show-runner of that series, especially since it was supposed to haven been the franchise's 20th anniversary TV series at the time.

rikacomedyletsplays Do you really think that anything you said matters at this point, nowadays?! I mean, I don't know what your experience is from watching a few Super Sentai shows, but for me?! I've seen far better and far worst sentai shows that have focused more on telling coherent stories than acting as a fucking toy commercial. And believe me...I've seen far worst sentai shows, before. Hell, same could be said about a few Kamen Rider shows and movies as well.

I love Mystic Force for a few reasons:
    - the 'big battle' took place only a few decades ago. That's fairly recent compared to some of the 'hundreds/thousands of years old evil'
    - the characters were all pretty damn 3D
    - magic rangers was SO DIFFERENT and refreshing to me
    - we saw characters developing powers and getting better
    - that ending
    - Mystic Mother. Nuff said.

To give Nick some amount of credit, seeing isn't believing. If I was in that situation, I would probably be convinced I was hallucinating, dreaming, or having some kind of psychotic break. • @smiley-skeleton4598
    @smiley-skeleton4598 6 лет назад +245

Since Nick is the son of, well, two wizards, it makes sense to me that he was probably born with magical powers that he couldn't control and couldn't understand. And he probably got a lot of shit for that, especially since he was an orphan. I think his reluctance to believe might just be a result of him thinking that if magic is indeed real, it means all he went through was basically for no reason. Just my two cents. 😅
Then again, I might have a little bit of a bias towards Nick. Not just because of Firass Dirani, but because Nick is, for lack of a better word, a cooler version of me. We share many a personality traits and I don't think I ever related so much to a character as I have with Nick.

I like that idea, but we never got that in the show. If we did, it'd make his character have more weight and explain why he'd want to ignore the blatantly magical things going on at first. Then, as we see him advance and get stronger, we'd get to see him open up more and develop into someone to not only cheer for as a ranger, but respect as a person.

If I were writing the show I'd have done it more like this:
    1. In the first episode, I'd have had Nick more shellshocked than in disbelief over the magic. More of a "This isn't happening" and less of a "yeah, this is all pretend". I mean, his entire worldview has just been irrevocably shaken.
    2. Nick's character dynamics would have been a little different. His main relationships would have been with Maddie (for the romance angle), Xander (both being outsiders and the eventual switch from Nick as leader to Xander), Claire (Because I think they're cousins and it would have been neat to see both improve their magic over time by learning together and develop a strong friendship without even knowing that they are cousins) and with Udonna (in a mother-son relationship before we even get the reveal. I'd change Nick's backstory so his adoptive mother died when he was young so that Udonna's backstory of losing her son would match well with that and make the reveal that Nick is Bowen a lot more powerful). I'd keep his rivalry with Koragg, but I'd edit that so Nick would grow more heroic over time as Koragg grew more unstable and evil, thus creating a nice duality between the two.
    3. I'd give Maddie more focus episodes, but the original one she had I'd change to a Nick focus episode, focusing on his position as an outsider to the group. It'd also start the arc of Nick becoming closer to the group and therefore also kickstart the Xander becoming the leader arc by having Nick slowly recognise overtime that Xander is actually a better choice to lead.
    4. As mentioned above, Koragg would not turn back to the good side. There would still be the Leanbow reveal, but after Koragg saves Udonna and revealed himself as Leanbow he'd sacrifice himself to absorb the Master in an attempt to keep him sealed and become the new leader after Imperious's death, now Koragg permanently.
    5. I'd use the Udonna sacrifice you mentioned above, her sacrificing herself to weaken Koragg so the rangers could destroy him and I'd even have Nick be the one to strike the final blow. After this, he'd become overcome by his grief and be taken over by the Master and become the new Koragg. This would lead to Xander rising up and becoming the new leader and Maddie doing everything in her power to turn Nick back, something she succeeds in. After this, Nick would want to leave, that being his go-to thing when things got tough, but would return on his own and gain Koragg's powers as a power-up, leading to the Wolf Warrior. Following this, you'd have Maddie and Nick become a couple officially.
    6. The overarching themes of the season would be very similar to Lost Galaxy. The original Mystic Force sacrificed themselves to seal the Master and his forces away. Claire's mother sacrificing herself. Calindor sacrificing his identity and becoming Imperious, Daggeron sacrificing himself to seal Imperious away, Leanbow sacrificing himself to keep the Master sealed away, Udonna's sacrifice and even the sacrifice of the team's sacrifice of their powers to stop the Master. Nick would have to overcome his instinct to flee when things get tough, his hot-headed nature to become a true warrior and even his own grief at losing Udonna to become a better ranger, Xander would have to overcome his overconfidence to become a great leader, Claire overcoming her own self-doubts to become the new mentor for the Rangers after Udonna's sacrifice. I'm sure there are other things that can be added in to fill these themes.
    7. In the final episode, I'd have Nick make the choice to take over Root Core out of respect to Udonna, working with Claire and Daggeron to teach about magic, thus allowing Nick's story to come full circle from episode one. Pretty much everything else would remain the same.

His potential gets so much buildup in the last third of the series, about how he’s “The Light”, the strongest sorcerer of them all, the one fated to end the Master’s reign of terror. The notion of “Sometimes the red ranger isn’t the best and isn’t a good ranger”, _really_ doesn’t belong there.

What I think I most enjoyed about mystic force and growing up with it as a child was the morals it instilled in me. Teaching me things such as honor, hard work, teamwork, leadership and accepting responsibility. For honour, koragg explains how you must have honor in all that you do. “My honor is the cornerstone of my being. A warrior without honor cannot be trusted to protect and serve you at all costs.” And all the other traits can be summed up when the rangers lost their magic and were powerless, all hope is lost and darkness rules over the world. They still continue to fight for what is right. To be the light in an empty room full of darkness. And to accept responsibility for their failures and mistakes and take accountability for it. No longer blaming Jenji for their lost but rather themselves for getting lazy. Mystic force is probably my favourite season !!!

I had to give up on this video before reaching the end because some of the issues you had, especially regarding Nick, came from being hamstrung by the requirements of the Magiranger footage.
Not every Ranger series has the advantage of being able to throw away the basic setting of the sentai source. With vehicles, it’s fairly easy. With a season with such a heavy magical theme, it’s not as easy.
And things like the Leanbow pacing and the lack of Red in the initial battles was something inherited from Magiranger. Heck, Sentai seems to love having their Red Ranger show up late to the party, and there are only so many ways you can adapt that.
If anything, one of the strongest bits of writing (if the worst bit of characterisation) was that they made Nick’s character consistent with the footage the best way they could without adopting the “He’s the youngest of five siblings” route.
We’ve also seen Power Ranger episodes where a character suddenly acts out of character to fit within the requirements of that week’s stock footage. So instead of having a mostly strong character who inexplicable acts different every so often, it feels like they’ve written a more consistent but inherently flawed character. And sometimes the footage is going to leave them with that unenviable choice.
It’s always going to be an issue when half of your storytelling is built around pre-existing footage and the rest has to be built to try to fit into it. Some choices will have been made for them, and sometimes it will leave them without being able to use “better” ideas and having to choose between inferior options.
It’s like trying to finish off a building where someone else (with a different plan, requirements and aesthetic) has already dug the foundations and you’re picking it up to build something different. Sometimes things just won’t go where you want them, and you’re left making choices that sadly won’t make sense without that background knowledge.

    Some quick things:
    1. In my undressing of Nick's "character arc", I didn't mean to possibly imply that his parents were not an area of importance, but that the show itself made it seem less important than it should have been.

I'll be trying to upload my important videos at least there but if there's a specific video you can't see for whatever reason, message me and I'll throw it up just for you :)

  • @freezia0
    @freezia0 6 лет назад +12

One explanation on Nick's utter stuborness in not believing magic could have been him having some kind of complex he developed when growing with the Russel's who apparently are businessmen so very rationnal people. Him getting "Dursley'ed" but being wild for the lack of emulation in his life with his adoptiv parents, feeling the need to disconnect.
He is a wanderer, not settling for too much time then leaving somewhere else when it doesn't fit him. That was his immediate reaction after the events of the first two episodes : he doesn't wants to get involve in this, he is not comfortable with these people, he will do as he always did, leave this behind and start again in an other place, opportunist like he is.
It would have been the case if, for the first time ever, someone insisted for him to stay. And that greatly surprised him, he had the habit people just letted him go, making him believe he was expandable to them. So nothing ever held him back somewhere.
He isn't a good leader and he doesn't want to be. Heck, he could have made a better 6th ranger, having somewhat of a touch of anti-social trait, like he does not believe in people, like something won't fall from the sky, you have to earn it yourself or you don't get it, otherwise make your way, because life won't make you any gift (hence is resistance to the concept of magic passed through the pragmatism of his relatives). But he kind of felt ... needed and that doesn't happened every day of his life and also Madison happened, all that made him curious enough to stay and ... try.
But, at heart, Nick is obliging to people who "lost their way" (litteraly and figuritavely) for he is a traveler and he knows what it is to be lost. He'll have this solidarity to strangers, for he feel lost in his own life. Like travalers are more of a family than biological or adoptiv. That's why he still go at the end, only this time he expended his family. Leaving the burden of red ranger, for he was meant since his birth to take the mantle, but in the end he wasn't through his life experience. And it was somehow reflected during his rogue moment when adopting the Koragg personna.

A lot of people appear to have a love/hate relationship with Mystic Force, but it will always hold a special place in my heart. Even though it's not my absolute favorite, it DID do something very special for me. For the longest time, I had actually lost interest in the Power Rangers franchise. And then I saw Mystic Force, and my love for the franchise was instantly re-ignited.

Here's a few things I would have changed:
    - Have the prophecy be wrong and the light was actually the forest people and the humans uniting as one against the evil.
    - Explain how the other four rangers are connected to this magical world. Maybe they grew up together in the same orphanage and slowly remember over the course of the season that Nick was there with them too.
    - Claire inherits the Snow Staff and becomes the White Ranger for the final battle.

Nick not being heroic at first and being reluctant to lead is a good idea and I think it works well. Just because you don't like a character doesn't mean he is a bad character, just look at Guts from Berserk or Rock from Black lagoon. They are not traditionally heroic but they work because of their dynamic with the people around them.

I git the point tut the thing is Xander actually learnt from his mistake but Nick never did. In Rock Solid, he realized his mistake of talking impolitely to Madison and it could give his character an arc of becoming more polite but instead what happened ?? In Dark Wish, Nick was going to fight Koragg knowing he didn't even had his magic when Koragg himself politely said that he want to talk leaving his sword on the ground. Xander on the other hand gave the right suggestion of following Koragg's path cause it was their last chance and it did worked. Nick was even going to fight that person in desert but Xander did the right thing. It's not about making mistakes and it's consequences but about what you learnt from it.

okay counter the claim that Nick is a quitter is grossly exaggerated
in every instance save for the finale HE is the one who gets up and pushes the team to keep fighting
Gatekeeper (Rangers think its hopeless he gets right back up and into the fight)
Dark Wish (He's the first to charge into battle to save Toby)
in just about every instance the guy is too stubborn to quit (I actually thought the ending was out of character)
also when a random stranger asks for help in the first ep, Nick is the first one to volunteer despite hearing the stories about the woods (even calls everyone else out for not caring enough to help)
and the one time he gives up its because its pretty hopeless, EVERYONE in the WORLD was gone, his dad was dead and the Master took down their most powerful megazord without even trying, and even then he redeems himself like 2 min later

I just finished Mystic Force. Nick wasn’t that bad. People make it seems as if he ruins the entire season. He made some questionable decisions in the early episodes, like not believing in Magic. Then, him giving up at the end was a pretty bad choice too, but the other rangers quickly snapped him out of it. Nick showed solid leadership, growth, and heroism throughout the season. Him giving up during Mystic Fate didn’t make much sense after he’s shown time after time to dive head first into battle even with the odds against him. The writers made a bad call on that one. I feel like it’s the popular choice to hate him, when he’s made similar mistakes that other rangers have made before and after him. I didn’t even feel like the season revolved around him. Nick’s back story didn’t really kick in until deep into the show. Even after Nick’s origin is revealed, they slowly peel beck the layers, and the other rangers don’t take a back seat to Nick at all. Mystic Force was amazing as hell. If they would have developed the romance better, and given Madison a few more episodes to shine , It’d be one of the top seasons of all time. It was a great time either way, and I don’t believe Nick deserves as much hate as he gets.

For me, Nick is meh. Kinda think he's a jerk at times, especially to leelee but to be fair she was a baddie at first. His words feel out of character when he said "you don't belong". He should have at least understood not belonging. Still, I'm comparing to the sentai, magiranger. The sentai's red ranger could be forgiven for his hotheadedness and bad moments since he learns from his mistakes and is genuine with him being a hero. Plus, that show had more to do with earning magic by showing true courage instead of recklessness. Also, he did almost give up but that's more of him hearing and seeing his teacher and father basically dying, so it's more on grief. Lastly, the whole light storyline bugs me because the original source, the sentai, emphasized that 5 were much more powerful than one.

I love this series so I might be a bit biased. But I always thought Nick personified a real person's reaction especially now in this era. I personally would've been like "uh am I being pranked?" And when people start getting hurt and it gets this serious I'm not ashamed to say I'm not a Gryffindor, I'm gonna run and say "hey I didnt sign up for it" and I feel like that's more of a realistic attitude vs assuming everyone will be a hero. Or that everyone would step up and take responsibility.
If anything we get a view into a ranger that is chosen but doesn't necessarily want the job and that maybe the powers that be dont always choose the correct red ranger lol Xander would make a good stereotypical red ranger.

Koragg the knight wolf was always my favorite villian to me
Honor as he would put it is the corner stone of his being.
Most villians especially in power rangers universes don't always seem to have that. Plus i felt the real reason why he never truly destroyed the mystic force besides distractions is they are worthy opponents he doesn't want to lose besides dageron.
Now as for the reveal of leon bow my head cannon would play out similar to wild force
    Ahem
After separation of leonbow koragg moves further away to be alone since the master no longer exist but is followed by Maddie she manages to speak with him of what he could do with his skills as a knight . well she suggest perhaps he can become a mentor to train a new generation of knights to protect briarwood especially at night while solaris could train those in the day
    Lunar guards
    Solar guards
Pretty much i saw koragg is a tactical fighter even getting respect from the tribunal. He knows when to fight and when not to fight that is the question XD plus his voice Geoff dolan and armor design is amazing he was one opponent that really pushed the rangers to do theyre best
Plus the fantasy in this season was well written and phinese and toby were enjoyable jenji to XD though i like to see him get chased by a dog once

She is the only one who actually learned the truth as to what was happening and learned from the rangers as a whole something that in the end set her free. She over time watched and studied the rangers, sought the knowledge, and then put in to practice when the Rangers put the final piece in the puzzle for her. Also in one on one fights aside from the muffin top guy (Can't remember his name) she is probably the most powerful terror because of her honor and intelligence.

And he has a kick ass fight theme to go with it. Other characters who fit into this character type are Clair, Toby, Boom and Fran. SO many times the day has been saved due to these characters giving the rangers a different perspective on things.

alternate take (5 years later, yes hi): claire is one of the rangers (maybe red? could be fun), xander is the leader, and nick becomes evil-korag, a la jarrod and/or trent. that way nick still gets to be angry and impulsive, but maybe gets some kind of meaningful growth (along the lines of MHA-bakugo's growth), xander gets to be the leader he deserves to be, and claire gets to have a more fully realized role and arc as one of the rangers, but also one of the initially worst magic users-turned powerful sorceress.
also, no romance between nick and maddie. well, ok, have her be initially attracted to him, and trying and failing to get his attention, and then move one from him when she realizes that she can do sooooo much better. (maybe vida's relationship with chip can be the catalyst that makes her realize that what she really wants is not something she'd get from nick, and to look elsewhere--either to a side character, or one of the other main cast) it would be a very good and honestly necessary lesson for kids that age to have.

Ok so here's the thing. Nick's problem isn't really the character. It's the fact they adapted the sentai's story and left out the most important parts of the teams dynamics. They are a family team. Red in the sentai wasn't even the leader, green was since he was the oldest sibling while red was the only underage one. Most importantly they all knew the white ranger was their mom from the beginning, so a major part was how they needed to avenge her after she seemingly dies. Red is especially passionate about it so he forms a rivalry with the korag character. But the Korag subplot affects the while team so it's not just him alone that grows from it.

The thing I liked most about this season is how vulnerable the rangers were - they had weaknesses but they overcame them together as a team.It had interesting cliffhangers and plot.Their costumes were unique (I guess they're the only ranger team with capes) But much as I liked the season overall, the final episode disappointed me.

In my fan-fic series, I tried to capture a bit of that dedication that Jason and Carter showed with my Red Ranger, Jessie. He's presented with the request to become a Ranger, and even though he has no experience, that he'll be putting his life on the line, he readily accepts if it can prevent other people from suffering.

This video is old but I actually like nick! Yeah, he had issues and was a problem but I liked the fact we didn't have another by the book red ranger and he had some issues to go over. Maybe his skepticism was owned to high but I feel like I would have done the same. Overall he had issues and could have been better but I liked him as a different type of ranger. Maybe if he wasn't the red he could have been better.

After watching magiranger, I've come up with my own way to change Mystic Force. It changes up a lot about Nick's personality but here goes.
Nick is not taken to the surface world and stays with his mother, Udona. He keeps his name Bowen but the others refer to him as "Bo". He admires his father Leanbow as a hero but not as a father. He strives to live up to Leanbow's legacy. He is always thinking about how he can become a hero but Udona tries to make her son see how Leanbow was not only a good knight but also a great person. As the series progresses, he comes to the conclusion that he is own person and not just the son of Leanbow and Udona.
Before the other rangers come in, he was never able to tap into magical potential even though he was chosen to be the red magician. And when he sees people who have never seen magic before be able to use it, it tears him apart inside. But with words from his mother, goes to fight without any powers. And through this action, he is rewarded with magic.
Also with the Maddie relationship, Bowen learns about the surface world from her and he always tries to connect with his team, mostly Maddie, with any chance he gets.
And as a leader, he could be like a tactician. As a child, he studied the art of the sword and way of magic even without being able to use magic. He learns from his team; such as learning responsibility from Xander and learning about the surface from Maddie. He is always seen studying about new techniques in the background.
What do you think? Yay? Nay?

Also when Leanbow is revealed, he refuses to accept Koragg was his father and declares Leanbow dead. This is because as a child, Bowen had come to the conclusion that anything, anyone related to Infersia is evil and be destroyed due to stories he's read. He then has a breakdown during his final fight with Koragg saying how much he wanted to spend time with his father.
And Bowen is the most calm, collected of the rangers. And most of the time he plans out his team's movement. BUT when he get infuriated, he becomes rash and will throw away his plans to just rush the enemy.
And at the beginning of the series, when he plans out strategies before Infersia sends a monster. He refuses to include his team in the planning due his belief of that they don't have the knowledge of magic and battle he has but then realizes he was wrong and opens up to them.

Personally, I would have liked Koragg to have a more Darth Vader story. Still have him be Nick’s dad, but this time, Koragg know that fact, and Koragg is the one who reveals that “I am your father.” But keep him evil after that, forcing nick to change as a character so nick can redeem his father. And during the final battle of the season have nick fight Koragg before the master, defeat him, and then not kill him, turning to the master who is now fully formed, and attempt to fight him… only to be swatted away like the insect he really is, but nick. keeps. fighting. Giving everything he has to stop the master, only for him to fall to his knees and unmorph. The master would begin to torture nick slowly killing him, and throughout all of this Koragg would stand in the background, watching…. And contemplating, until ultimately choosing his son over the master’s wrath, and in this final moments striking down the master once and for all.

They went to far with nick being apprehensive of magic but I did like the change of pace of his character. Nick couldn’t wrap his mind around magic being real even seeing it being more a form of denial. One of my favorite teams. A back story on nick would be a better way to explain why he is the way he is.

I love Mystic force and it's theme song I still play sometime. Best theme for them.
I also liked Samurai the series and theme.
Dino Charge had a good theme song too but the series overall didn't hook me.
This is coming from someone who grew up with Power Rangers but never stopped to watch it. Mystic Force was the first one I ever got into and enjoyed followed by Samurai.
