2001 ALDS, Game 3: Yankees at A's

- New York Yankees 1 at Oakland A's 0, F -- With their backs against the wall for the first time since 1997, the Yankees traveled to Oakland one loss away from elimination. A's starter Barry Zito stifled the Yanks through four innings, until Jorge Posada belted a solo homer in the fifth. Mike Mussina also pitched a gem, the key turning point coming on a bang-bang play in the bottom of the 7th, when Terrence Long drilled a ball into the right field corner. Yankee right fielder Shane Spencer fielded and threw toward the plate, where Jeremy Giambi was trying to score from first without sliding. Shortstop Derek Jeter, up the first base line, cut the throw off and executed a backhanded flip to Posada, who tagged Giambi out, 9-6-2. The eye-popping play preserved the lead, ended the inning, and turned the Series momentum the Yankees' way.

Giambi running like he had a refrigerator attached to his back
Just another GLARING example of why Moose needs to be in Cooperstown.
He's there now! :)
The radio broadcast sounds very cool with John Sterling and Michael Kay.

I remember how nervous I was this entire post-season, especially with this game. This Oakland A's team was so good. Shame they never reached their full potential.
The two heartbreaking ALDS losses to the New York Yankees started the Oakland A's inability to win do-or-die, winner-take-all playoff games in the Billy Beane era despite their regular season success with a low payroll.
In the Beane era, the A's won one playoff series (2006 ALDS vs. the Minnesota Twins), a record of 1-12 in postseason series clinchers and 0-7 record in do-or-die deciders.
That's primarily because Billy Beane found a system that worked very efficiently during the regular season of 162 games. Come the postseason, which is an entirely new season, the statistical approach wares off, and it's up to the big players who can play big in big games, which Billy Beane could never afford.
That one playoff series in 2006 was a sweep, when the A's did not have to overcome any losses to win the series. Simply put, when the A's lose just one game, you know they are done.
I guess that explained why the A's ran off to A Record 20 Game Winning Streak in the middle of the 2002 Season and had The Best Record in Baseball(Tied with the Yankees) at 103-59, then got knocked out by Minnesota in the Division Series. That year, The California Angels won The World Series over the Giants.
The Yankees win beat the a’s in the wild card game
@@Jiltedin2007 they were the Anaheim Angels at the time.
luvfreedom
I know, but to An Old Schooler(Like Myself), they will always be the California Angels.
this game should be on Yankees classics
I watched this game in pc Richards as a kid lol😂. Then we had to leave and heard rest via radio. One of my favorites
Best plays you'll ever see by a SHORTSTOP?? I'll still place that in my top 3 EVER!
In the first inning: "The way Oakland's been pitching, Mussina better be pitching the game of his life". Pretty much.
Mussina was one of the greatest pitchers. Never got hurt, incredible winning percentage, and amazing ERA all during the steroid era in the AL East hitters ballparks. The only thing he never did was have that one season where he was the best, he just had a career of being in the top 5 statistically every year. If he pitched in Oakland for a few seasons he wins multiple cy young awards
Thank you for posting all your recordings!
Dammit Jeremy Giambi, SLIDE!
The a's were a better team in 01"but they made mental error's in game 5.If giambi slides he is safe but a mental error changed history literally. That was the difference!!!!!!!
LOL @ all the people saying 'safe'
Out!😂
Yanks would win 7 of their next 8 games against 2 teams that combined for 218 wins.
The greatest play EVER! Derek Jeter HOF!
Giambi should have slid, but Posada tagged him before the foot hot the plate! They'll be watching that play for many years to come!
If Giambi does a hook slide, Mariano Rivera retires with never blowing a save in the World Series.
Still would have been tied
I want to see Alcs 2000 Game 4.....Clemens masterpiece in its entirety.
It was great, everyone was rooting against the Yanks, everyone hated Clemens after the Piazza thing, then Clemens struck out 15 in a 1 out shutout, after he threw at ARods head twice. True evil empire/bad guys shit that night. Loved it.
Johnny Damon looking over the Flip Play. Damon went on to win a World Series with both the Red Sox in 2004 and the Yankees in 2009.
best play ever
this is why Jeter is tough to replace 1:37:50
But Giambi was save, wasn't he?
No, he's out.
i wish they would reupload this and fix the audio. the delay is just enough that its hard to get past. and i can't believe there isn't a different recording that could be used.
That play ranks up there with Billy Martin's series saving catch racing into the infield to snag that popup that everyone lost in the sun during the 1952 World Series.
RIP Jeremy Giambi
How did you get a part of the WFAN radio in the beginning?
This was the game where Derek Jeter made The Greatest Defensive Play Ever in his Professional Career. Long after his retirement, people today are still talking about "The Flip" when Jeter flipped the ball(From the 1st Base Line) to Jorge Posada to tag out Jeremy Giambi(Who should have slid when coming to Home Plate).
Shane Spencer missed both Cut-Off Men down the Right Field Line when throwing to The Plate, Derek Jeter left his Shortstop Position to get the Cut-Off Throw and fielded it with His Bare Hand before he flipped the ball to Jorge Posada right on The 1st Base Line about 40 Feet from Home Plate to nail Jason Giambi, who came to the Plate standing up.
+Jiltedin2007 What's even crazier is that the Yankees ACTUALLY practiced this play.
Oh, you're kidding! Don't say that, you just might have tarnished Derek Jeter's Legacy. A play like that will never be duplicated in Any Major League Postseason. I, as well as Millions of American Baseball Fans, believed that Jeter actually left His Position to do that little thing to help Shane Spencer and the Yankees save A Run which would turn out huge later in the Game as The Yankees won 1-0.
Jiltedin2007 No, manager Joe Girardi said the Yankees still practice this play in Spring Training.

sean2015 you the real MVP
god, the a's pitching staff was so good *frothing at the mouth*
SLIDE GIAMBI! Oh wait...
Great play by Jeter but lack of hustle on Giambi's part..
Jeremy Giambi should have slid when coming to The Plate!
Cause nobody expected a SS to be in the first base line
Yea the throw missed both cutoff men and was dying in foul territory. He was probably gassed and figured no one is making a play like that.
To be fair he probably though yet he was safe. Nobody expected that.
The Flip
Oakland was in great position to completely topple the Yankees. They had the everyday players, they had the pitching, and they were all very young. And they would have done it with a garage sale payroll. But, they call them Chokeland for a reason.
Giambi looked safe
Holy crap Giambi rounding 3rd looks like he had a piano strapped on his back. What a travesty he was even on the team, the A's trying to appease his brother Jason with a favor instead of paying him. Lack of hustle/smarts on this play cost the A's so much, completely crushed their soul
"He gets on base"
Giambi's OBP in 2001: .391
#1:37:50 Jeter's backhand flip
good old days.
Moneyball is the 2nd best movie of all time!
True but I like for love of the game also
so around 17 minutes we switch broadcast. why not stick with one?
They are opening it for this year's playoffs because the ticket demand was so high. They will open the 3rd deck but not the "Mount Davis" seats. They say they may open up Mount Davis if they advance to the ALCS/World Series, esp. if they play Boston which would be a huge draw.
The Yankees offense in 2000 and 2001 postseasons wasn't very good. If it wasn't for great pitching, great D and some insanely clutch Homeruns they wouldn't have been able to win in 2000 or go to Game 7 with a lead in the 9th in 2001.
That's why they were so keen on signing an OBP machine like Giambi after 2001.
Plus those teams were examples of how they got by through experience. They were far cry from how they were in 1998 and 99.
@@iamhungey12345and other teams were scared of them in October and played tight.
@iamhungey12345 2000 Yankees had what 87 wins? They were lucky to even make it.
The 02 and 03 teams were much better, they just didn't have the same October magic.
@@dukedematteo1995 2003 was a case of blown opportunities being had. There were concerns with their RISP issues and middle relievers in their bullpen in the regular seasons and these came back to haunt them against the Marlins. I felt they could have won despite lack of break after ALCS which may have worn them down for Game 1. Even then they still led the WS with 2-1 lead before the extra inning fuck up in Game 4 where things went downhill.
Date?
WE OWN THE JOKELAND V's.....LETS GET IT POPPIN' ONTO VEGAS
great ball game i jeter the best
Thom actually made a memorable call... wha?
You’re here because of Moneyball, aren’t you.
I have that movie on dvd I just ain't watched it yet.But I will at some point.Cant wait. You said its the 2nd best,so just out of curiosity what's number 1? My favorite is Star Wars 1977. Followed by The Sandlot,A League of there own,& a real cult classic called Race With The Devil.
who are you talking to?
Captain clutch
Jorge Posada 0:58:48
What time
1:37:52 amazing
Moose shoulda had strike 3 on Long way before his double.....pitch was right over the plate, he was walking off the mound.
Giambi was safe. Posada never tagged him.
59:06 Posada Homerun
Which stood up thanks to Derek Jeter later in the game.
One of the few factual errors the 2011 drama film 'Moneyball' committed was that of Art Howe being brought in shortly before the 2002 season, when in reality he was brought in to manage the Oakland A's in mid-2001 - as seen here.
sanebear68 also Billy Beane being married with a wife
Art Howe replaced Tony LaRussa in 1996.
Also Jeremy Giambi already being with the team even though the "gets on base" scene has Beane mentioning him as a player he's attempting to acquire.
Fuuny how they never mention that Giambi was safe on the play, Seen this 100 times and he is still safe to this day.
i think the ump decided to reward a great play
John Looney: Funny how you're not mentioning that Giambi was a dumbass for not sliding, & is therefore a dumbass for putting that call in the hands of the umpire. Seen this 100 times and he still should've slid to this day
Which Giambi? Jason Or Jeremy Giambi? Cause I'm Pretty Sure Jason Giambi Left Oakland After 2001
Now and then there's always going to be some projecting idiots in denial who wanted to believe that he was safe, like this guy:
ruclips.net/video/ApoJk9X7Vto/видео.html&lc=z12ky3w5uoabd5cvq22bgzsyrx2ouzo5x04.1531107037725135
In the end nothing will change the fact that Jeremy blew it by not sliding. And there's the fact that Oakland still had Game 4 and 5.
He was out, get over it. The A's had a 2-0 series lead, and they blew it.
Thought u had to be tagged out?
Thought you should slide when someone's trying to tag you?
the announcer saying the lazy getting out the way was a stretch
Jeter = GOAT
Velarde and Sierra never got a title . Bounced their way around 4 championships
Sierra got a ring for 1996 despite being traded halfway through that season due to his lack of production and his attitude problems.
OAK 5 NYY 3
OAK 2 NYY 0
NYY 1 OAK 0
NYY 9 OAK 2
OAK 3 NYY 5
Am I the only one who finds that weird echo annoying?
Who’s here to see the money all scene in person? 😂😂
"My problem with that play is that YOU GOTTA SLIDE HERE. You have to slide(...)"
Oh, Steve Lyons, if only you tell that to Giambi...
I hate to be the devil's attorney at law here, but I must here: I guess Giambi NEVER saw Jeter, with an rocket in his ass, and wings on his Air Jordans,(I don't even know if they make Air Jordans for baseball) flip it over to Posada to tag him.
I would even agree with some people that he was safe, but he should've been even MORE safe if he slid though. He was out.
it's actually questionable whether Posada tagged Jason in time, but still a hell of a play by Jeter
汚いスライディングが

Choakland
Giambi's fault for not sliding.
HE WAS SAFE
Nope.
The one and only meaningful clutch hit of Jorge Posada's career. I'd call him the worst clutch hitter of the 1996-2012 era but unfortunately there was Robinson Cano lol . . .
No it wasn't. What about game 7 of the 2003 ALCS when the Yankees were down 5-3 in the bottom of the eighth against the Red Sox? If he doesn't get those 2 RBI's in that at-bat, Rivera doesn't have an amazing 3 shut out innings and Aaron Boone never hits that HR in the bottom of the 11th to send the Yanks to the World Series.
OroborusFMA I think the 2003 one was more clutch. This was simply an early solo home run that turned out to be the only run scored all game.

+OroborusFMA umm..how about the game 7 03 hit or how about the bottom of the 8th hit against the Phillies to extend the lead to 7-4...a forgotten hit, but def clutch...he did the job, although I wasn't the biggest fan of him either
learn your baseball
Looking at that Jeremy Giambi play 13 years later, he was actually safe when they play it in slow motion. Replay would have caught that, but alas, that was not meant to be for another decade.
Replay wouldn't have overturned it, the play is too close
I was just looking at that, he was undoubtedly safe.
Keep telling yourself that.
lol dude...he was not safe
Giambi was safe even though he shouldve slid
+Sean Carroll no he wasn't safe, watch it in slow motion, clearly out
Should've pinched runner for giambi
That play wasn't anything special. Jeter was just running to the dugout early because he needed to use the bathroom.
Yankees are irrelevant period. Since George is gone, the team is just clueless and a shadow.
+Raed Rahman I'd have to agree with the last statement. Girardi is a good manager, but it doesn't help when the upper echelons don't have an idea of how to direct the franchise, nor how to get good players.
P.S. I am a Yankees fan.
+Raed Rahman Every successful team like the Yankees is bound to hit an 'irrelevant' wall at some point.
Just sayin'.
+Samuel Marinov But we all know this isn't the first time the Yankees hit a wall like this.
For the good of the Yankees, George's Kids should just sell to someone with The Resources as well as The Will to win, like "The Boss" himself!
That 90's team was put together while George was suspended from baseball.
