I like how Sam always gives the other family members the chance to have their own interpretation of events. It’s a weirdly rare characteristic for people to be able to realize that experience is subjective (edited, my bad, lol)

My husband was never allowed to snack or grab food freely as a kid either. They were very poor growing up. Now he is constantly snacking and wants the house extremely well stocked. Even if he isn't hungry he grabs a snack. When I ask him why he just says "because I can" 🤦😂😂😂

When I moved away from my parents house, the first night in my apartment I turned on all the lights, turned the air conditioner all the way up and opened the front door. I then called my parents and told them. My father understood and appreciated the humor ( I get my smartass humor from him :) ) My mom, not so much. She didn't appreciate it. Dad and I had a good laugh. And then I turned off all the lights, turned down the air con. and closed the door.

My partner grew up not eating on the weekend as the family had run out of food. As an adult he opens the kitchen cupboards and fridge to look for food all the time. I call it 'opening doors'. He feels very uncomfortable when there is not readily prepared food there for him.

  • @kkaye76

Typically, when you walk into a kitchen and go to food sources, its indicative of one or several things.
    1. You're hungry.
    2. You were deprived of food in your formative years.
    3. Your body is crying out for specific nutrients and you are subconsciously filling or trying to fulfill them.
    4. You have a place inside you that needs filled. Many people use food to try to fill that wound/emptiness unconsciously.
    5. You're bored. I'm a boredom snacker and I was a boredom smoker many years ago. Find something else to fill that space. (Jumping Jack's lol)
I rarely go to the frig when I walk into the kitchen...unless I'm hungry or my body wants "something ".

As far as the refrigerator deal, I grew up with kids that weren't allowed to just go eat whenever they wanted. My family didn't have that kind of rule, unless it was right before (30 minutes or less) dinner. I have always opened the fridge door and stared aimlessly though. Lol My hubs grew up very poor, with a lot of children (he was the youngest of 10). When a treat (ice cream, candy, etc.) is brought into the house, he eats it in one sitting. 😳 I think it stems back to his childhood (stories he's shared) when he had to eat all he wanted (and could get lol) at once. Maybe not, but it sure makes sense. On Christmas, I stuff his stocking plum full of candy and he eats until his heart is content. 💜

    • @GrowingUpinPolygamy

I don’t snack at all, but the first thing me and my siblings do when we walk into our parents house, is go straight to the fridge. And if there isn’t anything in there that we fancy, we go to the biscuit tin or for a packet of crisps. Whether we’re hungry or not. Sometimes we just look, lol. And growing up, we were never allowed to take any food at all without asking, and if we did ask, the answer was usually a no. We were told it would spoil dinner or tea, whatever meal was next.

I grew up in an adverage household, and we had some similar rules... We were not allowed to laugh loud either,.... Everything had to be a whisper unless it was a conversation with my parents. He was stern but he was quite fun and he taught me to play my first real pc game and he would let us drive his work truck around construction sites on his lap.

Hiding your music reminds me of my husband saying that as an Amish teen in the 70s, he managed to get his hands on a radio. He would hide it under his pillow so he could listen to baseball games as quietly as he could hear it so he wouldn't get caught. (A radio is a big no no for the Amish) He said the first pair of regular store bought jeans he bought his Mother hid them from him. The Amish kids learn to be very sneaky. LoL

@Kathy Yoder If you don't mind me asking, which Amish community was your husband raised In? I grew up for the first 8 years of my life in Akron,OH and we were close to Hartville,OH where they had really delicious baked goods at the Thanksgiving and then Christmas holidays. I also discovered,as a teenager,my love for them in Holmes County,OH,the largest community of Amish and Mennonites in the world(at least in the early 2000's when I visited them). On my Mother's side I have some Amish or Mennonite relatives from my 3rd Great Grandmother backwards. On my Dad's side, they were definitely German with last names like Kinder and Hoffman, maybe some Amish or Mennonite heritage there, too. Sorry for me rambling. Hope you are safe and well.

I'm curious what scripture was the reason for the no loud laughter rule? I know 1 Peter 3:4, but that's not referring to laughter. I recall reading in Proverbs not to greet loudly in the morning. Laughter is a very healthy emotional response and stress reliever. So many scriptures about joy, laughter and a merry heart, does good like medicine.
I love God's Word. It's so important to read and know what it sayes for ourselves. Thank you for sharing

    • @GrowingUpinPolygamy

I will look up the exact scripture, but it wasn't from the Bible. I believe it was from one of the early prophets of the LDS and FLDS religion. They believe that what the prophets say is also considered their scripture, and so sometimes I say scripture when I am actually meaning words from their prophets.

First off - Sam and Melissa - you guys are awesome. Thank you for opening up your life to the world of RUclips! It’s been fascinating learning about FLDS, but even better is witnessing the curiosity, thoughtfulness, and respect you guys bring in every discussion. I came for the intriguing Growing Up In Polygamy RUclips recommendation... and stayed for you two 😊
I have soooo many questions for you. But no pressure at all to answer (I swear I find new things to add to this list after every video) but it’d be really interesting to understand your perspectives.
    1. Has having children of your own changed how you feel or think about polygamy and FLDS in retrospect? I know you mentioned in a different video that you wanted to be present and attentive to your children in a way since that was hard to come by in your own upbringing. I’m curious too, if and how your concept of being a parent has evolved since having your own children vs. what you witnessed growing up/ what you thought a mother or father should be/do.
    2. FLDS and LDS both seem to create a strong sense of community and belonging. I assume you guys still live in Utah(?) where there’s a considerable mormon community. Since leaving the church, how have your social circles or communities changed? Do you feel your kids will miss out on the same type of social/community closeness you both had growing up within organized religion?
    3. What kind of impact do you feel the reassigning of mothers and children for reasons aside from death of the father had on those impacted/the broader community? (eg. punishing the father). IMO it seems to strengthen the loyalty to the faith & the larger community (via fear maybe?) over familial/blood lines. From someone with 0 experience growing up in polygamy, it seems to be an especially cruel punishment that could cause a lot of psychological damage but wondering what you felt or witnessed.
    4. These questions are just writing themselves at this point! What do you think will happen to the FLDS after Jeffs’ passes? I’ve read some stuff around FLDSers scattering around more since Jeffs’ imprisonment / more ex members of the church coming back to live in that area. Do you feel like it’ll be closed off for much longer?
Thank you both, again. I’m amazed at all the new things I’m continually learning from y’all!

Omg, the snacking! My husband is the WORST. Like, you have to work them into the weekly/monthly budget lol although I will say I started making homemade snacks years ago to help save money and obviously they are healthier and he doesn't care as long as he can just grab it and eat it lol we have 4 kids and so far just 1 of them is a snacker (we will wait to see what tiny baby will become lol)

LOL! Often i walk into the kitchen and completely forget why i'm there, but usually if i open the fridge it's because i forgot what was in there or i'm checking for cheese! That's so funny that you love to snack now - I guess it's time for Sam to learn how to cook some good meals so that when he opens the fridge he can gather ideas!! :) Sorry, i guess i'm assuming Sam doesn't cook :P

I would have to say that some rules like no running in the house are good rules to have. It would be crazy to not be able to watch movies, TV shows, and sports on the TV at any time. Also crazy to not be able to just go on the internet and read and look up and watch things. I feel like I could do it if I really had to like if my internet or power went down at my ranch house. I would probably just do even more things outside than I already would. Sometimes it is nice to just get away from technology, internet, and social media.

When you were living in the FLDS community were you at all taught about politics or world events and things of that nature? Did the group seem to back a certain political party, or were they completely separated from the secular world? Thank you so much for making these videos, it has sparked a huge interest in religious studies and sociology in me and you all seem like the kindest people ever :)

I have a question about serving a mission - if you are volunteering how do you support yourself while you are doing the mission? I read that the families will help some but how can they with such a large family to support and how were you able to do it when you were on your own?

The mission I served was for the LDS church, which I joined after leaving the FLDS. For an LDS mission you pay 10k to go on the mission and then the church uses that money to pay for your flights, housing and gives you a monthly food allowance. The family that helped me when I left helped pay for my mission as well as other donations from other LDS members in my ward (congregation).

I just saw somewhat of a similar question. If you are married and the husband passes away, what happens to the wife or wives and the children? How are they provided for? Does another man who already has wives and children take them in or are they placed with a new husband that maybe doesn't have a family already etc. You mentioned that men typically get married in their 20's and will marry a woman who is similar to his age so I can't imagine that an unmarried man would marry a woman that was already part of a of an already established family. For instance, your father had 4 wives and a lot of children. It didn't seem like the women worked and I guess took care of day to day things in the home. So would the boys in the family help to support the family until they got married? Even still after that, at some point all the children would end up married and then the wives would still be widowed. Sorry that is so long but I wasn't sure how to ask that without leaving anything out. I'm not sure if you know since you left at 18 too.

    • @GrowingUpinPolygamy
      @GrowingUpinPolygamy  3 года назад +1

Great questions. When a woman becomes a widow she will either be taken care of by an older child that has a family or will be remarried into a family. My fourth mother was a widow who was much older than my father and had all adult children before becoming part of our family.

@@GrowingUpinPolygamy it's nice to know that older woman have a place to go and still be part of a family. I really love this channel. I find different religions fascinating. Although your family was strict, it still seemed like there was love and care there. I have been hearing really bad things recently that I was unaware of and watched an interview with Warren Jeffs 65th wife. It's also wonderful that you met someone who has a somewhat similar religion beliefs. They just don't seem as extreme. She grew up Mormon correct?
