Trudeau, Poilievre heated over Jasper wildfire: “Pretends you can put out forest fires with taxes"

  • Debate on climate change and the price of carbon was focused on the Jasper, Alta. wildfires this past July during question period in the House of Commons on Wednesday.
5,000 residents and 20,000 visitors to Jasper National Park were ordered out in late July due to a fast-moving wildfire.
“Mr. Speaker, (Justin Trudeau) pretends you can put out forest fires with taxes,” said Conservative Party Leader Pierre Poilievre. “What he should have done is listen to his own officials who said that the mass build up of fuel in the Jasper Valley, as a result of dead trees, needed to be addressed through controlled burns and other clearing methods, and also preparation, so that we would have the ability to fight the fire if and when it ever started.” Poilievre said.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau responded, saying “Jasper was one of the most fire smart communities in the country over the past two years. Residents and leaders within Jasper have been exemplary in making sure they were doing everything they could to protect their community. This fire, Mr. Speaker, was a treetop fire. It jumped from treetop to treetop and through flaming pine cones, kilometers ahead of it, which is what set this burn. This is a result of climate change. Mr. speaker, climate change. He doesn't want to fight."
"It's true - the people of Jasper were fire smart," the Conservative leader replied. "The problem is that the government in Ottawa was fire stupid. This government was warned repeatedly over seven years that they needed to clear the dead wood to prevent the spread of a future fire. Why, instead of bringing in a crippling carbon tax, didn't he clear away the wood and stop leaving a tinderbox to explode?"

Driving the Icefeild Parkway just two weeks before the fires, I was shocked by the amount of standing beetle kill I saw, and had to explain what it was to my girlfriend who had never seen it before.
The scale of this fire was entirely preventable, and the responsibility lies solely on the mismanagement of the Federal govt who mismanaged the forests around Jasper since you do not see that many beetle killed trees standing outside of the park, or on the other side of the provincial border in the Mt Robson region less than 45 min drive away.

Instead they have happened in more "environmentally sensitive" western countries. That is no coincidence because extreme irrational environmentalism also legislates policy that is highly restrictive of logging as logging is bad to them, even stopping loggers from taking dead ultra dry trees that are sitting there as strong fuel for lightning strikes and other fires that could happen and then spread quickly and powerfully.

August of 2003, A raging forest fire ravaged the southern hills of Okanagan Lake; North Of Peachland BC. The fire started in a ravine Gulley, It quickly spread because of dead fall of debris of decades of old pine needles, which never was burned to ensure safety. Jasper Alberta, suffered the same fate of this year. Our Prime Minister has his head stuck where the Sun don't shine. But because of the stagnant thought processes of yhe Governments, BC lost a legacy of The Old Train Trestles of The Old Kettle Valley Railway. Homes, farms, horticultural vegetation and wild life forever lost to fires. Towns and Cities threatened. When will our leaders come to some semblance of reason?? Time to vote in a new governing body, to represent a new Government, time to oust our governing Prime Minister.

The forest around Jasper has many dead trees from the mountain pine beetle. The pine beetle infestation has increased in the recent past due to longer and warmer Summer seasons and this is a direct result of global warming. It is high time that western Canada politicians understand this fact and take serious steps to reduce global warming.

hi, Jasper evacuee here. The fire was preventable, Parks Canada ( Federal Organization) wasnt clearing dead fall nor maintaing the back country.
Policy and rules got in the way, Bulldozers were in town Tuesday morning (We got evacuated Monday night) but Parks said no to offloading them as they didnt want the land destroyed.
There was water bombers loaded and ready to go Monday night, Parks said no to having them drop the red fire retardant as they didnt want animals or trees dyed red for a bit.
Parks wanted to be the ones to save the park but ended up being the ones to burn it.
They don't want to mention these things they want to say it was climate change
all this info I shared comes for residents of Jasper, people who did the most to protect the town and stayed while others left. all that occurred while the federal government did the bare minimum to save the town.

To remove dead brush from a forest with machinery would take years and years of preperation, youd have to rip down trees, excavate and remove organic materials, build roads, portable infrastructure and portable employee housing and a ton of portable facilities, not to mention there would be multiple sites across the entire forest. This would cost taxpayers hundreds of millions to possibly even billions of taxpayers dollars, as there would be hundreds and hundreds of kilometers of roads to access every area that could pose a fire threat. The risk of losing everything would be immense, as every year there is the risk of a forest fire burning down everything, each time in a different location.
Among this incredibly important point, lets not forget that branches keep growing, dying and falling, so this would be a full time job that hundreds of people would work, eating away tax dollars. The amount of fuel this would burn completely counters their argument that its helpful towards climate change. A controlled fire is $500 per acre and doesn't require hundreds of workers, roads, infrastructure, facilities, and employee housing.
No wonder his wife left him, he hasnt a clue what hes talking about. He should stick to pride parades and stfu

Logan Lake was fire smart! That's why that town didn't burn to the ground when the Forrest fires surrounded it. They had a "trial" program of rooftop sprinklers on all of the houses in town.
Why hasn't this government spent the tax money on clearing the dead lumber and putting sprinklers on the rooftops of homes that are in densely forrested areas of towns and cities in Canada? Almost every town in BC is surrounded by forrests! We have stopped logging, we have stopped clearing dead lumber, we have stopped using our common sense completely and it's costing Canadians EVERYTHING and had been for 20 years now, ever since the Okanagan Mountain Park fire.

Like reducing carbon emissions and the carbon tax, forest management also requires taxes. The same Conservatives whining about the carbon tax would also whine about increased taxes for better forest management. They'll also wonder why their air conditioning costs are going up along with their insurance costs. The consequences of doing nothing about carbon emissions are much higher and much less predictable than the carbon tax.
