    Hey Friends! I know this video is SO LONG. I really didn't know that it would be this long until I had it edited, but I didn't want to cut out showing you how the products work especially because some of them became my new favorites (and others were kind of fails)! So let me know if you like the longer videos or would rather them be cut up into a few! Either way, hope you enjoy! Thanks for watching!

    the fuzz is salt from evaporation of the ink. it only happens in cheaper inks and it’s very weird.

    • @hunnybubs4527
      @hunnybubs4527 5 лет назад +8

      Yeah it’s called desalination and the “fuzz” on the outside is just salt/ minerals that are being pulled from the ink. It typically happens in water based pens with cheap ink.

    A tip they may help u in the future when it comes to using brand new watercolor brushes like the Jane Davenport,is to soak the tips in a cup of water BEFORE u try squeezing any ink into the tip...For some reason it helps me to get the ink flowing much easier rather than all of that hard squeezing which usually results in ink squeezing out all over the place!

  • @johnd9357

    That “fuzz” you’re referring to when you first open pens is actually mold. The tips can grow mold.

    I recently bought the Jane Davenport mermaid markers ( at my local Michael's w/ a coupon) and really liked them... One thing I found when you activate them is that they barely leak, if at all, once you rinse the brush before doing anything. Then as you push slowly, they soak up the ink really well and don't leak. There is a coating they put on the brush to keep them nice during shipping/capping that makes it hard for the ink to soak in.
    For leaking in other areas I would definitely recommend getting them at a store so you can make sure they haven't already leaked during shipping. I have watched some videos on the amazon warehouses and I think the reason people have been receiving leaking sets is because of the way they are stored ( in baskets) and possibly picked for packing ... I saw one at Michael's that was starting to leak and grabbed a different one that looked good.
    Another benefit is that they are refillable with her ink or just some ink that you have, even just using them afterwards for a water brush.
    I just wanted to say something because I think they are pretty nice pens/colors but, you just have to get them in person ( w/a coupon of course!).
    Hope this helps anyone who is thinking about getting these markers! :-)

    • @HowtoHandLetter
      @HowtoHandLetter  6 лет назад

      Thank you for sharing! That is good to know about the water (they are definitely stiff when you start to activate them so I can see how that would work!). Someone else mentioned that you could buy the ink at the store but just not these specific colors - I'm going to have to check them out because the colors are just SO pretty! Thanks for watching!

    • @gloriousbeginningsangoras4217
      @gloriousbeginningsangoras4217 6 лет назад

      Yes, they are really pretty!
      I just went to Michaels and saw that, in fact, she does have the ink but I think they changed the names to "INKredible ink". I may be wrong but they sure do look the same... Just thought I'd share!
      One more thing... I recently got the Winsor and Newton watercolor markers and totally agree with you, they are great for lettering I can get super thin up stokes and the colors are pretty too! They are SUPER juicy too!!! I am super excited to try them for water color!
      Although I also was noticing that the bullet nib seems to fray quite fast... But even if they are frayed you can still use it for water color, so that is nice.

    If brush pens as the ones from Jane Davenport leak, it's most likely (I guess 90%?) due to user error!
    There are 2 common and major mistakes that are made over and over again:
    *First mistake: you pressed/pushed too hard!*
    They are not made to push ink out! They are made to let the ink flow out, big and important difference! If you push the barrel it acts more as a pump, not as a press!
    To get them started the first time, just push 4 or 5 times short and not too hard on it until you can see the ink in the clear plastic. Then just wait for 2 minutes, gravity will do the rest, if not do the same again. You can try to scribble carefully a bit so the bristles move and the ink will flow inbetween. If the inkflow is started, it's self feeding. If the inkflow ever stops or you need a bit more you can push it, not too hard, and the inkflow will increase. Increase! Don't expect the ink to flow right at the moment you push and to stop if you don't, it will take a half or two seconds.
    More pressure won't fasten the inkflow, it will cause leakage and can destroy it irreparably. If you once pushed the ink out of the flow-system f.e. in the thread and it leakes, you need to take everything apart and dry it completely (hairdryer)! Otherwise the ink will always flow everywhere else first but not in the bristles. Basically it's a branch in the capillary system. Worst case is a leaking, dripping pen with a dry tip, selfmade even before the first use. I've seen this happen in youtube videos soooo many times!
    Try to imagine emptying out water from an aquarium with a tube - once the waterflow is started, it will keep running
    *Second mistake: wrong storage!*
    If you store these pens with the tip down. It's still self feeding and if the bristles have any contact e.g. inside the cap, the inkflow keeps going until there is too much backpressure for the capillary system. In other words, until the cap is filled to the point the bristles touch the cap.
    Don't put too much or too long pressure on them! Store them upright to stop the inkflow, it will start again when you turn the bristles down and pushing 1-2 times if needed. The inkflow will start right away and you don't need to take time as it took to get it goint the first time. If you want to take ink out of it, just scribble it on you pallette otherwise be careful with your pressure or unscrew it to take a few drops out.

    Could just be the video but the metallic pens look as if they have kind of a spongy foam tip? If so, I think that actually causes the "fray marks" because they don't have a smooth surface to begin with.
    Bubbles usually occur if you shake rhe pen right before using it, maybe try to just tilt the pen instead of shaking it.
    With a spongy tip I can imagine that bubbles could also appear if the tip squeezes on the paper and fills up with air every time the pressure is released. But the ink/paint seems to be so much, that it shouldn't happen. A sponge structure is also able to let air bubbles just pass through without bursting them.

    The best way to cure dry markers if they are new is to face them so the tip is pointing down. This allows the ink to flow into the nib and allow them to work. I did this as I bought the 14 pack of papermate flairs on sale and i tested this method myself. after 2 days the were like they were brand new again!

    THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH!!!! I’m a newbie to hand lettering so your videos can NEVER be too long! Thanks also for your thorough and honest reviews. I also appreciate your recommendation regarding which printer paper to use. Thanks also for the idea of using Jane Davenport’s Mermaid Markers. I tried to hand letter with them but had the same issues you discussed. Your BRILLIANT idea by using them on a pallet then using a waterbrush has helped with wasted ink when writing directly with the markers. I agree with you when you mentioned that it would be great if the Jane Davenport Mermaid Markers came as a separate product. Thanks again. I’m already keen for your next video, regardless of length! Best Wishes. 😀👍

    Hi! I don’t know your name, but I am watching your pen haul, so thank you for all of your information!! I loved it!! I just wanted to mention that if you get am embossing buddy from Stampin Up, or the embossing tool from EK Express if you just brush the powder all over the paper before you use your embossing pen, or stamp, the embossing powder only sticks only to the area where the embossing pen was used! I know this will work instead of shaking the paper! I also wanted to let you know that the black embossing powder is so hard to use and if you write in black, you can use clear embossing powder over that, you will get a much better result!, happy writing!😊

    Video was not too long. Loved all the helpful information! So kind of you to sample and experiment for all of us. It's so hard to look at a packaged product and try to imagine how it will work. I have your latest lettering kit and was wondering about paper so thank you for answering that too! I was wondering when first starting out, how long to you suggest practicing at a time? Per day? Thanks so much for all you help. 🤓🖋💐

    • @HowtoHandLetter
      @HowtoHandLetter  6 лет назад +3

      Thank you so much! And I totally agree! I used to look up reviews on pens before I bought them but no one was ever relating them to hand lettering, so it wasn't always helpful for me. Some brush pens are great for coloring and so people would recommend them but they totally wouldn't work for me. That's a huge part of the reason why I started my channel! Anyway, thank you so much for watching! I honestly would say that daily practice is really important to build muscle memory. As far as how long, it's kind of up to you. I totally overdid it at the beginning and got a very painful wrist where I thought I had carpal tunnel! It ended up getting better as I built strength and then over time I was able to letter for a lot longer (like hours when I record these videos!) without getting sore. So I'd say to ease into it at first with some basic drills over and over (even if it's just in 10 minute increments) until you feel comfortable with those and as your wrist and hand gets stronger, you may find yourself being able to go longer without getting tired! Hope that helps & thanks for watching!

    Hi, there nice video and thanks for reviewing all the pens and markers. Second, the fuzz that you said was on the Kelly Creates small brush marker is from the pigment build up when the marker has been overfilled, it happens when markers have not been used and sit on store shelves. You can just get a piece of paper and try to get the excess pigment of by wiping it in paper or just scrapping the sides of the marker that should help. Anyway thanks and keep the videos coming.

    • @HowtoHandLetter
      @HowtoHandLetter  6 лет назад

      faeriequeen6713 ahh that’s good to know! Thank you! I didn’t look for them because some of the negative reviews on amazon were that they were supposed to be refillable but the people said they couldn’t buy the inks which maybe was because they couldn’t find the right colors! Honestly, these markers were such a mess that hopefully they’ll just see their strengths and start to sell the inks only by themselves. I saw they’re down to like $11 on amazon so maybe getting clearanced out for new products? Hopefully! I think these and the kelly creates are both made my American crafts so it makes me wonder if they just have manufacturing issues in general! Thanks for sharing & watching!

    I love this video i own all of these pens and markers but i still love to watch these videos! I got so excited for those Kelly Creates metallic pens because the colors are pretty but man they were disappointing yours seemed much more juicy then mine i hardly got any color it was mostly silver! I haven't loved any pens that American Crafts have made at least the ones i have tried are usually not good at all! I have seen that fuzz i thought it was some type of bacteria or mold i seen it on alcohol and water based markers i tried looking it up to see if i could find anything about it but i couldn't find nothing!

    • @HowtoHandLetter
      @HowtoHandLetter  6 лет назад

      Thank you so much for sharing! That's super interesting about the markers! It really bothers me when brands are inconsistent because we're paying a lot of money for some of these products! I can't believe your pens weren't very juicy - I felt like mine were almost pouring out ink and not in a good way! It was like I was writing with paint. I actually just replied to another comment today questioning whether or not the American Crafts manufacturing had anything to do with it. I'm pretty sure the mermaid markers are AC too and they obviously had some huge manufacturing issues! I'm curious to see if anyone else has noticed this! And I totally thought the fuzz was mold, too, but obviously not sure! The other brush pens I saw it on were larger brush pens so it was more obvious that it looked like fuzz. So gross & another viewer said that she had the same thing on her KC brush pen in the same color! Thanks so much for watching & sharing your knowledge!
