  • While Anders army soldiers were in the Land of Israel during the 2nd world war, they visited Maresha and entered this cave and engraved the inscription "Warsaw Poland" as well as the eagle image - which is the symbol of the Polish army. Due to the inscription, it was decided to name the place, "The Polish Cave". 4,000 Jews served in Anders army, which constituted about 5 percent of its soldiers.
The Polish cave, was initially used as a cistern and at a later stage the columbarium was added.
