In school, we learn Spanish the way the woman was speaking
sproutling It's most likely that you were taught Spanish from Mexican or Spanish speakers, rather than Argentineans (the guy's spanish). We have a very distinct variety of words/grammar structures/pronunciations that differ from the rest of the Spanish speaking community.

I'm not a parent but I can relate so much. my father is from Buenos Aires so naturally growing up I learned to speak how the guy in this video. in my school tho (I'm from Germany but I went to a bilingual school) the teachers and other students were Spanish or from other Latin American countries that spoke differently and they always tried to correct me and I'd fight them.

+Andrew R oh, not as many as in for example Los Angeles or many other American places. I live in Berlin, which is basically THE place for immigrants from allover the world, like you won't find that many on the countryside, but generally the majority of immigrants here are Turkish or Arab or East European. Also there's more Spaniards I think than anyone from Latin American countries.
There is a community, but it isn't too big, I'd say. You'll get to know many through for example the bilingual primary schools or festivals, but you'd have to search otherwise.

I went to the spanish/German primary school so I had half my classes in Spanish. the bilingual secondary school was rly far away and had kind of a bad reputation? so I went to a regular high school where I did French and later Spanish, but bc of bureaucracy I had to "learn" it all from the beginning, "hola yo me llamo..."

Why would you put ham on cake??? lol. Another time I asked my friend for a lapicero and they were like "what is that?" I was like a pen duhhh. In Mexico they say pluma which literally translates to feather. hahaha 😂

Once my 3rd grade teacher asked the class how to say "beans" in Spanish. I said "habichuelas" since I'm Puerto Rican but another kid said "frijoles" since he was Mexican. I was so confused because I never heard anyone say it like that before 😂

I am half Mexican and half Guatemalan. Similar struggle since in Guatemala they also use Vos (which I know is also found in Uruguay) and in Mexico they don't. My mom is from Guatemala and a lot of the family that I would spend the day with so I caught a bit of Voseo. My dad I interacted with when he got home from work.

Growing up in Texas, around mostly Mexican people, I had a hard time communicating as a kid, not knowing the versions of words that Mexicans used because I was so used to speaking with my parents and their Argentinean friends, and my family over the phone. When I started pre-K, I had no friends because I always corrected kids' Spanish. I got into an argument with my pre-K teacher because we were going over the colors in class and when she asked what orange was called everyone else said "anaranjado" and I said "naranja." She told me I was wrong and that "naranja" is only a fruit and I told her she was wrong because "anaranjado" wasn't a word and my mom always said "naranja." I also had a few mishaps when teachers wanted me to say "mande" when they called for me. I told my 2nd grade teacher that I wouldn't say "mande" because my mom had told me not to say that because it sounds submissive. So I always said "qué" and she called my mom, my mom told her the same things I'd told her and that because I had no other complaints about my behavior, she wasn't going to make me modify my speech because that's how we spoke, and she wanted me to be able to communicate with my family who still lives in Argentina. This specific teacher loved me so she let it go.
Still, I have problems sometimes understanding what people are saying when they use words I don't know, just as they do when I use words they don't know, but working with my dad in his shop and dealing mostly with Mexican customers has helped me greatly with the dialect barrier.

They were speaking a different variation of spanish, I'm méxican and I relate more to the woman's spanish, the man's spanish was probably from Argentina or Uruguay.

Irish American married a Castellana and we are bilingual. When it comes to Spanish I follow her lead and when it comes to English she follows mine so we have a distinctive Colorado/Castellana mix. The problem is that my parents are/were Southern (I was born in Colorado) and now we both will use "Y'all", "Bless your heart" and such. The other problem is that she grew up near Valencia, Espana so a lot of her friends speak Catalan and now we both use "bufar i fer ampolles" and "fotem un café" and other phrases. Both of our kids were raised bilingual and grew up in the US. Now my daughter is in college in New England and my son is dating an Argentine girl. So when abuela (Castellana) comes over she gets a little "concerned"... Son to girlfriend: "Che!..fotem un café?" Girlfriend: "Claro..pero ya me pica el bagre." Daughter to brother's GF: "Ya! So right, yahknow.. there's a place in town where they have a scrod grinder... wicked, good. Mint!" GF: "Guao!" Wife to everyone: 'No, no, abuela y yo hemos hecho la cena. Estará listo en 20 minutos. Y por favor no más palabras raras, Y'all sólo español, abuela anat l’olla. Y Imma' fixin' some Tapas tambien."

En Argentina se dice torta o bizcochuelo. Generalmente se le doce bizcochuelo a la torta sin nada, sin relleno nada, la que es sólo miga.
I am a Spanish teacher and a Cuban woman who grew up speaking and writing Spanish. I can tell you that most of the textbooks I have used use the woman's vocabulary but I grew up using a combination of both. Seriously, If you have to fight over something, that is not it!!! Teach your child both because we all know that there are several ways of communicating the same thing in Spanish!! Even my family from Spain can communicate with me using Catalan!!! I say get over it and teach your children Spanish!!!

That's because most schools in the USA teach Mexican Spanish. Mexicans make up the largest Latino group in the US, so it makes sense that most Spanish teachers would be Mexican.

I call piscina "alberca" (but I use both interchangeably) and I call calcetines "calcetas" (it feels weird to call them calcetines because I'm used to calcetas)

When speaking Spanish, I always use the word castellano referring the Spanish language. I learned Spanish when I was in China where European Spanish is taught more commonly.
