    The late '80s Turbo Bird was a fantastic car for its time. I was in my 20s back then and I remember it being one of the few bright spots in what was a pretty dark time for auto enthusiasts. I used to talk cars with a co-worker of mine around that time and we both appreciated the Turbo Bird. The next thing I knew he shows up with a brand new '88 Turbo Bird, dark red, stick shift, and loaded with pretty much everything it could have including a sun roof. That was a sweet car.

    I like how the owner subtly modded the car. The 93 Cobra wheels, lowering it slightly and slightly extending the front lower lip/spoiler really made it look a lot better than stock but in a tasteful, OEM looking way.

    My dad made me take my drivers test in a 1977 T-Bird. It had a hood 27 feet long. (or so it seemed) His thinking was that if I could parallel park it (a mandatory test then) I could park anything. So far, he was right.

      The joke was on your dad. I have a 78 TBird and although it's long it's also the easiest car I've ever had to parallel park. I suspect it's because of the long front and comparatively short rear end. I've had some amazed looks from folks when I parked the T Boat in one try with a smile on my face. Love that car!

      Took my drivers test in a 1977 Mercury Cougar XR-7. Basically the same car as your 77 Tbird. The guy that gave me the driving test made me parallel park up hil in between two cars that I thought were too close to each other. I was a little nervous at first but it was super easy.

And would take it to the local car meet every Friday night. Would be 110% cooler than 99.999% of the Honda's that would pull up easily!! And the only reason I don't put 100% down is because you never know there could be that one dude in his 30's pull up who actually knows how to build/customize cars and does so tastefully, so tastefully in fact that it will grab the attention of everyone in the parking lot not from banging his engine of the limiter for 30 seconds at a time to make sure all eyes are on him but grabs your attention by giving it a second glance and saying damn thats nice whats done to that, now its not going to make you follow it to which ever spot he chooses (and lets be real this guy is going to park on the farthest side opposite of the revving fuck-tards in their hand me down lawn mowers that mom use to take them to school in until they were old enough to drive an then they inherited it) but you will make sure to walk down the isle he is parked in to take a closer more in depth look beneath the hood an around the whole rest of car

      I had a silver ‘87 5 spd . Excellent car with unique features for the day like being turbo charged, a big car with a 5 spd manual transmission, 4 wheel disc brakes with ABS, electronically controlled shocks with a comfort and sport setting, adjustable thigh bolsters on the front bucket seats, limited slip differential, 16” aluminum wheels, an Alcantara-like material on the seats. I think Ford created a really nice GT car for the period. It could be a comfortable cruiser on long trips in comfort mode with tons of room for luggage and camping gear or a real canyon carver in the sport setting. It had a top speed of over 140 mph and you could get over 30 mpg (imperial gallons) cruising at 80 mph. As a package, it offered something no other American cars could match. That’s why it was 1987 Car of the Year.

    -SVO
    -Corvair
    Those are just off the top of my head....

    • @DrewLSsix
      @DrewLSsix 8 лет назад +16

      They could have...by using the same drivetrains in those cars. But then you wouldn't buy them. A turbo V6 corvette would have walked away from the GN but nobody would have bought it, even if it was fundamentally better than the V8 in power and handling.

    • @iant720
      @iant720 8 лет назад +23

      +DrewLSsix My point was that GM will never let another car be faster than the Vette. So instead of making the Vette faster they hindered or killed the competition. The Vette had 160hp. An SBC can easily make 300hp. Without turbos or anything.

    • @DrewLSsix
      @DrewLSsix 8 лет назад +13

      +Ian Thompson no...they couldn't. Engineers at the beginning of the 90s were sure that there would never be another 300+ hp pushrod V8 in any production car. You act like they were making that little power for no reason.
      They considered turbos and even OHC motors for regular production Vettes but determined that they wouldn't sell to traditional vette owners. And they were right.

    • @iant720
      @iant720 8 лет назад +12

      +DrewLSsix Just do to emissions. They easily made that way back in the 50-60's. They didn't because like the rest of the world, the fuel crisis was big. Emissions were new etc... Ferraris had barely over 250hp so why did the Vette need more? The world was happy with the low power of cars. However does not mean they couldn't build the engine to make much more HP.

      the real secret is the SVO pistons. GM never took the time to develop and test a piston that can actually increase the compression ratio as much as Ford did. Ford did and they were successful at it. On Bill Elliot's T Bird at Talladega and it also won Daytona too. that engine was producing a 21:1 compression ratio at full song and a 11:1 at idle. GM V8s at the time could produce 16:1 compression ratio at full song and 10.5:1 at idle. And by the way those pistons that Ford had are the same ones used in their SVO street platform engines.

    • @davidalexander828
      @davidalexander828 6 лет назад

      So on the track Bill Elliot Ford T-Bird was producing more Horsepower. Plus his brother Ernie knew how to build engines better than Yates or Rousch too at the time. And GM did have a Nascar team that build engines better than them, Childress at the time was the top dog in NASCAR on the GM side

It had electronic climate control. It had automatic electronic suspension. I remember when the electronic shocks wore out I called the Ford dealer and asked how much for a pair of front shocks. Back around '94, the price for a pair of front shocks was $1200! I said that includes installation right? Nope, he said that was over the counter. So, I just switched the shocks to "Firm" and left them there. In '96 I bought an Impala SS and gave the Turbo-Coupe to my 16 year old son as a reward for his high grade point average. He thrashed that car until it finally died.

    OH man I'm so happy you did one of these. I had two Turbo Coupes in high school - in the year y2gay - and I loved them so much. From a modern perspective, yeah it's a very, very confused/confusing car. When it was new, though, the Turbo Coupe was like the ultimate fusion of American and European forms and sensibilities. Ford was really knocking shit out of the park for a few years there under Donald Petersen, right after their near death experience... but by the dawn of the '90s they were ready to get back to selling stupid, fat cars to stupid, fat Americans. That's why the Turbo Coupe doesn't make sense to us in 2016; Ford never really built on what they started with the cars like this, the Fox Mustang, the original Taurus, etc. Instead, they went all in on easy SUV/pickemup truck money. They never adapted to the shrinking "personal luxury coupe" market, cheaped and dulled out the Taurus while its Japanese competition just got better and better, and allowed the Mustang to get progressively more cartoony and retrocentric over the years. When the T-Bird "came back" in 2001, it was the ultimate in sappy, sentimental retromobiles. Promising beacons of Euro hope like the OG Contour and Focus arrived full of compromise and lacking the (relatively) high quality that defined mid '80s Fords. The current "One Ford" model recalls certain elements of the Petersen approach, but there isn't any firm link between the two eras.

    I had a summer job as a lot boy for my local Ford dealer in Philly in 88. Someone stole our T-bird turbo and it was recovered in Baltimore. I was sent to get it and spent the whole day weaving up and down i95. Loved it!
