- Shoe polishing is both luxurious and frugal.
HongKongTatler.com heads to The Armoury in Central, Hong Kong, to learn the art of shoe polishing from Ethan Newton, co-founder of the artisanal clothiers.
"After six months the shoe falls apart". I read and hear this type of comment by clothes horses all the time and it is utter bollocks. Unless you wear the shoes or clothes in a way that they are not designed for even inexpensive items will last a many times longer than that.
Great film but not sure about the 80's electric blue sound track.
Carl Fry that was my first thought....wtf is that wierd background music
Shoe trees are definitely very important..
the music is louder than his own voice making it difficult to understand.
yes, the music is overload...cant hear the guy...aagghh
Superior advice for bespoke gentlemen. Please delete soundtrack. It's not needed and distracting.
Like the video but what's with the crap music? Too loud too!
I bought my first pair of Allen Edmonds because I appreciate quality, craftsmanship, and the longivety of the shoe. But what bothers me is when a lot of videos, such as this, says cheap shoes fall apart after 6 months or even a year. I bought a pair of Rockports at Macy's for $100. 7 years later, I'm still wearing them. They lasted me 6 years before the sole cracked in half. I can still wear them, but only in dry conditions.
Timothy Chan Berluti is the best
Timothy Chan my Rockport is 25 years and I'm still wearing them
@@victoria69813 Berluti is a $3000 shoe
3 years and noone can repair them, and after 3 years is when they look the best.
What’s with the 90’s porn music?! 😂
Funky music, sounds like a Miami Vice acid trip all in one, and yet you find yourself polishing shoes... must be the chemicals...
Love this informative video.. also... I actually liked the background music. Great Vid.. please keep it up! Give us more of these informative videos.
Re-work the video by taking out the horrible background track and repost. Great video save the music.
Do you wax the bottoms? I've always asked myself how to maintain the bottoms clean. Thought at first people used sandpaper. How would you recommend to prep the leather before applying the shoecream then wax? any help would be greatly appreciated
Love the video.
He knows what he's talking about. Take good care of your shoes and they'll make you look sharp.
Thanks for some great tips.
went past the armoury while in hongkong. Brilliant store.
that antique brown .. yum
Turn down the music.
He's a kingsman!
Agree about shoeedges, but in generall, shoetrees, renovature, creame, hard vax and good laces.
Daily maintance 30 seconds goes a long way, and a few versetile quality shoes, 20/80 rule for the win 🥇and you must be in the upper quartile.
Wow, that toe cap is shiny. Saphir polish, G&G's and Lobb shoes... theres no store like this in Houston =(
Meltonian Shoe Cream is great as well.
How do you polish the shoe edges?
I cannot remember seeing a shoe tree outside a shop window and that would have been decades ago. I certainly don't own any and I have perfectly good shoes that are 30 plus years old.
me too and why would he say an expensive pair of shoes will fall apart after 6months huh
With what kind of cloth is he rubbing the shoes?
Best Store in Hong Kong!
At least they used some music from a 1991 Sim City game x.x
I am lost on the "if you want to burnish or add color" part. Are you suggesting using Saphir Surfine with color, Saphir Cream, or something else completely?? Thanks.
You can use different types of wax colours (Saphir Pate De Luxe Wax) in the polishing process in order to change it and add the patina.
The music in this video is good. But it doesn't work here.
What is the liquor used for in the background? Lol.
i think it'll be better to let ehtan newton talk about he has to, without any music behind..... but good video!
Why he kept polishing the soles? A display pair?
this has inspired me to increase the love I give to my 10 year old crockett and jones brogues
Nice job.
how much do you charge for bulling shoes
Well the shoes you own I could buy
Are you supposed to polish the bottom of the shoes as well or did I misinterpret what he was doing in the video? This is news to me!
What other option is there besides polishing your own shoes? Here Finland it's certainly the only option.
Have you ever use SKUFF PROTECTANT on your leather shoes? Heard it last longer then regular wax and protect better. What are your toughts on this ?!
Can I just warn you not to bother reading the comments. 90% are all about how great the music is.
Music is annoying, I had to mute the video
How can you restore the colour of the sole edge if it's rubber?
Next time you make a video with a mixed sooundtrack of music and voice, look up the term 'ducking' and make your settings accordingly.
Just use kiwi brand. I use it on my parade boots
You know you made it when this guy is taking care of your shoes.......
lol the music
Who the hell polishes their shoes without first removing the laces.
anyone who's even slightly experienced with shoes. Removing the laces everytime you polish tears the loopholes...
Me
Did he polish the soles too? Wouldn’t that make shoes slippery?
Oxfords not brogues.
which model are the shoes ?
Leon P Most likely a pair from Saint Crispin's.
I wonder if he polishes his head too?
That is quite a psychedelic scene, I must say.
Was not a fan with the loud music in the back round
To use WHAT?
Unfortunately nowadays it's a lot harder to find a good quality shoe cream than drugs.
I can get the same result with kiwi shoe polish
not sure that your shoes will appreciate on long term ;)
Especially if you use only wax and you never cream your shoes.
Kiwi is just synthetic crap, Saphir is made from natural products and the leather loves it.
Aurélien Duplan thank you ;)
Saphir is the highest quality polish and it gives a better ultimate shines
That last phase lost me. What's thy suppose to mean?
Please delete music, great tips btw
i love this video but i hate the music
That music! 😖
Terrible background music. Just awful.
Polish, or any sticky material, may look your shoe look nice, but it attracts dust and dirt. Dust and dirt remove moisture from leather and can act as an abrasive where your shoe folds. Of course, the abrasive action is minimized (or negated) at the toes and heels.
I don't see the point in applying polish or conditioner to the soul. Anything that makes the soul softer will cause it to wear down faster than it needs to., akin to softer compound tires.
Saphir is alright but they don't make an actual conditioner. Even thier beloved Reno doesn't really absorb into the leather, it mostly seems to dissolve whatever waxes or creams that have been applied and as the solvent in it evaporates, surface tension causes the wax or cream to form a smooth surface. Plain old Lexol conditioner or even better, Bick 4, seem to be much better at conditioning leather.
I just cover my shoe soles with rubber protectant
Get rid of the music! Far too loud.
Get rid of the music and repost please
Saphir polish is fantastic. Kiwi is cheap crap. Will work in a pinch, but it's nowhere near the quality of Saphir.
Kiwi always feels synthetic, is used for hard wearing military or work boots. Not for quality dress shoes. Saphir is buttery. You almost feel you can eat it.
Yes but when it comes to bulling shoes kiwi is best
I have tried many polishes, Burgol Palmenwachsschuhcreme und Schuhpomade, La Cordonnerie Anglaise Pommadier und Bees Wax, Kiwi Shoe Polish und Pflegecreme, Famaco Emulsionscreme und Hartwachscreme, Saphir Medaille D`OR Pommadier und Pate de Luxe, while living in Europe. Just a sample of my shoe caring box. But of all of them My favorite is Kiwi!! I was also in the Army and I feel that with very little effort my shoes have a great shine. In fact, this guy is spitshing his kicks. I don*t think it matters what kind of polish you use because with the rubbing, water, alcohol, and don*t forget TIME, you will get a Super shine. In the Army that was an important point when you went to the Board for promotion. How you presented yourself. Each thier own, but for less money you can get the same results. It*s just a matter of TIME!! I bet he spends at least 30-60min. on 1 shoe. And in the beginning alot more because the shoe needs many base coats.
Chris J I've used both. Saphir is presented in nicer packaging, but the difference in quality isn't night and day. Particularly because a firm, wax polish wont seep into the shoe very much anyway
Annoying music!
I disagree. If I can afford to have someone polish my shoes, why not😖
Great meth music 😬
music sucks but great info
Guys dress well all the time..
.. Bu
is it me or that annoying music is irritating and disturbing.
Why is there cheesy porn music?
you use what you are a con man
Who on Earth chose this awful music? How did someone put effort in creating this abomination, choosing the worst organ effects and pitch warps?
