  • Steve Wynn was invited by the Milken Institute to speak on the topic of creativity. The Milken Institute provides community discussions on a variety of topics, in order to encourage educational and professional growth.
Steve defines creativity and originality, specifically how originality comes into play when ironing out one’s creative process. He delves into the temptation of copying the things that we admire within our own craft or industry, and how despite mimicking another’s success we will always end up with something different.
To further explain, he tells the story of the Golden Nugget, which Steve used to run in the early days of his career, where Willie Nelson, Kenny Rogers, and Waylon Jennings would perform. At the time, Steve had an employee who aspired to be a successful country musician like Jennings and in doing so would attempt to sing exactly like him. He recounts a conversation between Jennings and the employee where Jennings, though flattered, told him that in order to be successful you have to be yourself. Originality is what creates your identity and gets you a stake in whatever industry you’re trying to break into.
