    years ago I ran my snowblower dry to store it for the off season. the following year I turned on the gas and gas started overflowing out of the carb. I'm thinking that there was a small amount of gas left in the bowl that dried up and caused the float to stick. Since then I put STA-BIL in my gas can as soon as I fill it at the gas station. This way I never have to prep any of my equipment for the off season. Everything is always ready to use or store. I have NEVER had a carburetor problem since then! I also use it in my collector car. I highly recommend STA-BIL!!!!

    Stuff works great. I've had no problems with equipment with fuel about a year old. I've also found that using 89 vs 87 fuel helps the engines run better- especially with two stroke. Another trick for long term storage it to run engine till it runs out of gas-then store it "dry".

      Not sure about Stabil, but Sea Foam works by having Isopropyl Alcohol in it, which disperses the water through the fuel more evenly.
      Normally the ethanol alcohol attracts some water into the fuel, and the water being more dense sits at the bottom of the tank. When you go to start it, it's too water rich to start. With dispersents, like I.A. that help to mix the water more evenly in the fuel, the fuel will still burn, though not ideally (and tends to produce more carbon).
      The lazy'ish, but still fairly effective way to take care of this issue, is to in a good dose of stabilizer and detergent in, and leave only a little fuel in, run it a bit with the stabilizer and detergents in.
      Then, when you go to use it again, drain the fuel from the tank, put in some fresh fuel with some detergent/cleaner, and start it up. The stabilizer and detergent/cleaner should have kept the carb from gunking up badly. And with fresh gas, with little to no water content, you won't be adding to the carbon build up once you start running it.
      The more ideal way is to drain everything completely, but sometimes getting to the carb drain can be a pain, or sometimes you have a lot of fuel still left in it and it feels like a waste.

    I'm fortunate enough to have a local gas station that still sells ethanol free fuel. people get it almost exclusively for boats and small engines. there is about a 30% price premium but at least that water issue that occurs with ethanol isn't a factor.

      High octane for a small engine? That doesn't sound optimal.

    • @justinw1765
      @justinw1765 5 лет назад

      @@jeffreyd1701 Depends on the small engine. A lot of scooter and some motorcycle engines (like the older 250 Ninja's, which I have one of), particularly single cylinder engine based ones, are higher compression, high revving, very hard working, but simple engines. They put out a lot of power for their smaller size.
      For smaller, but very hard working engines like these, high octane is pretty much a necessity to prevent pre detonation which can lead to knocking and pinging (which eventually leads to a lot of damage). They don't have all the sensors and equipment to adjust things internally, such as many modern cars can.
      I recently bought a 150cc scooter (single cylinder engine, and scooter has top speed of about 60mph, and revs pretty high) off a guy who used regular gas for the 3700 miles of it's life up to that point (and didn't maintain it completely properly). The manufacturer who made it recommends high octane, premium fuel.
      I was getting a moderate amount of something like back firing at first and for awhile. Relatively soon after, I bought Shell NitroV-power, high octane fuel (which has extra cleaners in it--mainly P.E.A.), did an oil change and put really good oil in it it (and flushed with some Marvel Mystery Oil).
      At different points, I also added some Seafoam, and at other points, some Marvel Mystery Oil to the fuel.
      A couple hundred miles later, and having burned through the old fuel awhile ago, it's not doing the pfff pfff anymore, and running smoother, quieter, and with a bit more pick up and top speed. Part of that is cleaning the carb some, part of it is the much better (and cleaner) oil, but it's also definitely using the higher octane fuel.
      Can't say for sure, but I think it's running cooler than it did as well.
      But yeah, for lawnmowers and the like, regular gas is fine and actually more helpful for these lower compression engines.

    Thanks, Bob. Great reminder around this time of year to do a little preventative maintenance, and save a ton of money and work too. Good tip to change the oil as well...I admit I haven't been doing this. I always use non-ethanol fuel in my small engines so it might not be as critical to use stabil (I still do anyway,) but I was surprised to hear at least one state doesn't allow the sale of non-ethanol fuel, so I would think that makes using Sta-bil much more important for storage.

    • @justinw1765
      @justinw1765 5 лет назад +1

      @@577buttfan That, or they live in a very consistently dry climate. When you live in a very dry climate, the ethanol in the gas won't attract as much water into the fuel, as there is much less atmospheric moisture to begin with.
      I live in a consistently quite humid place (typically ranges from 55 to 90% humidity), and like you, I can't go 3 months without having too much water in the fuel which causes problems especially for smaller, carb based engines. I haven't tried Stabil yet, but I do use SeaFoam, which works if I add extra amounts. A number of times my lawnmower wouldn't start until I added extra Seafoam. It already had some in the fuel to begin with, but when I add extra (and shake it around once in it), it will work.
      Then I make sure to put in fresh gas as soon as I'm able, to dilute the water.
      I don't think it's so much that the gas is breaking down in most cases by 3 months, but too much water. Without any ethanol, gas can easily go a year in most conditions and still be decent. Typically there is only 4 to 10% ethanol in US gas, which is a small fraction of the total, but just enough to attract enough water (especially in high humidity climates) to cause problems.

BTW, one of the cars that wouldn't start was a '87 Buick Grand Nat'l and that is a SFI fuel injected 3.8 and that for sure should have started. The other is my 70 Z28 I bought in 1981 and it has the 780 CFM Holley. And yes I did fill up both fuel bowls before trying to fire it up. I wouldn't use a stabilizer in my cars I store if you gave me a free bottle each yr. Without it the cars fire right up. Both cars use Shell premium with 0% ethanol.

      @@johnmilner7603 Not all Shell Premium gas is ethanol free. At least in my area, no gas is ethanol free. I could drive a hundred miles or so to get it though.

    Are you aware, that if you have some water in your gas tank, that if you add stabil as a fuel stabilizer, it will do nothing to the water in the tank? All three stabil products were tested and none of them removed the water. You can stabilize the gas but you'll still have the problem of water in the gas. A new gasoline stabilizer, called K100, will stabilize the gas and will combine with the water so that you can burn it and get it out of your gas tank. Here's a video of the tests. @

    Doesn't work for me. I tested it by added a TBS of water to a gallon of gas. Nothing happened. Water stayed in the bottom of the tank. Tried the same thing with k100. It did incorporate the water into the gas. I now just remove the ethinol from my gas. Grass and garden TV channel done the same thing, don't work. Anything is better than nothing I guess.

    I can tell ya it's probably unnecessary in dry climates like Western Colorado. It's probably snake oil. But it's not too expensive so it's doable. I use about 50 gallons of portable canned gas and diesel a year.
    The only way to check this product is to get 6 containers of gas from 3 different sources and do a lab test on all before and after. Let it sit 24 months on a shady shop shelf. Test again. And then run them in identical machines to see how it does. Who is going to do that? Much easier to just believe their snake oil is legit! 😆
    The diesel anti-gel may do more. But again, not needed in Western Colorado. Dry climates have those benefits. But I use it anyways.
    I have my doubts that any low mixture ratio of any chemical do anything for fuel. Likely all snake oil.
    When I use fuel system cleaners I fill up with premium and put 1 bottle per gallon of 3 to 4 different fuel system cleaners. Once every 2 to 3 years. I still can't tell a difference at that strong concentration. It has made no noticeable difference in any of my cars and I've had 35ish of them and drive them until the wheels fall off or the motors fall out.
    I drain and run the line fuel dry out of my chainsaws and lawn mowers every Winter. No issues ever. I also use cloth filtered and settled used motor oil and run that through my bar/chain and for anything that uses 2-cycle fuel. No issues. I also dump 2.5 gallon of it in every fill up of 35 gallons of diesel in my all-stock Dodge Cummins. Yes I change the fuel filter more often. That's the only cost. Takes 5 minutes to do that. Cost me $8 every 2 years for a filter.
    I run a quart used motor oil per full gas tank in my cars also. It seems to keep things going good. Lubes the pump a little. Has no negative signs of smell or visual. Probably increases compression a little also.

      Do a test Jerome. Get an old push mower that runs. Put 10% 87 octane fuel in it, run it so everything is saturated with it, then leave it alone for 6 months. Then do a thorough inspection of the carburetor (and tank). I've been a small engine mechanic for the past 25 years and in recent years have had quadruple the fuel related repairs. It's no myth that Ethanol draws moisture and the combination of ethanol and gasoline also has a nasty byproduct once fuel reaches it's half life (90 days) that becomes acidic and eats away at fuel lines and carburetors. Remember when pump gas lasted two years untreated? Those days are long gone. Don't be blind to the reality that things change. Sta--Bil isn't snake oil as you suggest. Being around these engines for 60 years, you should have seen newer engines by now where the fuel cap expressly states that Ethanol voids warranties. There's a reason and Sta-Bil protects against the harmful effects. So don't be stuck in the past please. Open your mind to the reality that new fuel additives are bad for small engines. With kind regards. Zip~

      Up until a couple of years ago I would agree with you. Yes, most fuel and oil additives ARE snake oil. But small engines don't seem to store as well as they once did. Is the ethanol to blame? I don't know. Probably. But I have reluctantly begun to use Sta-Bil with good results. I use it in the tanks of several farm tractors too, tractors that see only occasional use.

    I watch all of his videos and love them, but I definitely don't agree with this video and I feel he is only making this video because they are sponsoring him to do it. Don't use this product, Stabil does nothing for ethanol and that is the real killer. The best thing you could ever do for your equipment is drain it completely and leave the carburetor and tank dry of gas if possible.
