We have heard a LOT of reports of T-Mobile dealers selling these plans at RV shows - straight out telling people that mobility was fine, despite knowing that the terms of service said otherwise.
These dealers are pocketing the sales commission - and leaving T-Mobile in the awkward spot of needing to enforce terms that were in writing from the start.
      A rotten situation.

I have been using the home plan locked in at $55 per month in our RV for over a year. We are RV travelers and only travel part time. We rarely boon dock or travel to remote locations. While I am not at all happy about the price increase I am happy that I can continue the service with “AWAY”. We have the WiFi linked to our Thermostat, Auto Gen Start and Dog monitor. I leave it plugged in and it operates all the time. When we stop anywhere it’s already set up and ready to go. No cables, no alignment, no box, , nothing for anyone to steal and it works while the RV is in my inside storage so I can monitor it from home. Can’t do that with a StarLink
There may be other options but this one was easiest for me.
I will get StarLink eventually but for me the T-Mobile option remains my top choice. I do like that I might be able to toggle it off a couple times a year which could help equalize the cost but I most likely will not.

Here's the rant. I have been a TMO customer for a number of years and generally considered the service the best out there. I had 2 Magenta 55+ lines, A tablet line and a Watch line. Then I started having problems with calling certain numbers - they would fail and engineering couldn't figure out the problem. Still I was considering TMO Home internet(currently have FIOS . But after announcing the price increases occurring across the board i think Ive had enough. Since I'm going Nomad i went with Star Link but haven't set it up yet. Also got the PepLink B One 5G with their data plan. So I think I'm all set. Thanks for all the info. Never would have found some if this stuff without you.

I'm from Sacramento, but when I was in Las Vegas a couple months I went to a T-Mobile and talked about home internet, and she was like, technically you aren't supposed to get it in Las Vegas, but she would let me get it anyways and T-Mobile doesn't enforce this. I know things are probably going to change though. Something that might make a difference is starting to use your T-Mobile gateway in your home area first, instead of using far away in a different state. I just got my gateway and service a few days ago and I will go cross country pretty soon hoping it will work OK.

We've asked our PR contact if they will have a way to switch betwen TMHI and AWAY as needed for part time RVers. Hopefully they have a solution in mind beyond having to start / stop plans and return to the device each time.

    • @mikeholczer

@@MobileInternetResourceCenter nice. If they are interested in actual customer examples, you can share our situation with them which is that we would like to use our TMHI 49 weeks a year at our normal service address and 3 weeks a year an a different fixed location where TMHI currently isn’t offered. If there isn’t a way to make that work with reasonable cost and effort we’ll probably switch to Calyx and fully drop TMHI, which I think would have the same impact to their network, cost us slightly less, but force us to use a device with a worse cellular antenna.

Many RV’ers have been sold their home internet as a mobile option. We were sold this in a T-Mobile brick and mortar location as such. We’ve since seen booths at several RV shows and they ALL market it this way and tell you straight out that they don’t enforce the home only location. We RV with it AND we are remote employees who are required to travel and work remotely on occasion. If they push this rule enforcement, someone should start a class action lawsuit since their own salespeople marketed it this way for the last couple years to build up the subscribers. Misleading people and then pulling this bait and switch. At least they should grandfather the people already subscribed.

@@MobileInternetResourceCenter After I saw your response, I called them (I was on for over an hour) because I knew I had not lost my mind and saw the comment mark - lol. This is a quick way of explaining what they said. They said I would not be penalized if I used my device remotely. They explained that two customers could go into a store and leave with the same type of device. One customer has the Home plan, and the other has the AWAY plan, and even though the devices are the same, the account configuration determines the service on the device. She explained that the Home Service is receiving what she calls HOME internet access, and the Away Plan is receiving a combination of Home internet access and CELLULAR access (she said it is like a hotspot). The home plan will only ever receive HOME internet access no matter where you go, and your service may be limited due to limitations of obtaining home internet access where you may take the device with you. The Away Plan is charged more because the system is switching back and forth between its services to ensure a stable connection no matter where you are. You may receive the home internet access signal because in a particular area it is clearer for the AWAY customer while traveling and when you move to another area (city/state) you may be consistently on cellular internet access because it is more stable. Because the Home Internet plan only receives Home Internet Access, when customers want service, they have to have their address checked to ensure the area can receive the Home Internet Access signal. She said, yes, the old way has worked for some people who travel , but there have always been limitations and people complained; the new AWAY plan resolves this by using two types of services to service the customer, making it a better plan than the HOME Plan and why it costs more.

I realize this is not part of the TOS but the T-Mobile employees outright lied. I know I was lied to. My home address is in the service area, but I travel most of the year in my RV. I specifically asked and was told that traveling with the service was completely fine. I was told that Internet might be slower in busier areas, but that the plan allowed me to take the service with me. Going forward they are fine, locking the service, but not for those of us who were sold we could travel. It’s the right thing to do. In no way will I ever purchase a $160 a month TMHI.
