  • I am giving my impressions of the classic Hyundai Ioniq EV.
Sorry for the focus issues, I forgot to set it to manual + fixed. The video is not the most important today anyway :)

I paid $15,000 (13,760€) a year ago for my 2017 Ioniq EV. I could sell it for more now, but of course I'd have to buy another car, and now is not the time. It works for my 50 mile (80Km) 3 times a week commute. It is a great car, but compare it to today's EV's and it does look dated as far as range and features. Still, for the price I paid, and what I use it for, it's perfect. And my next car will definitely be an EV.
Thank you for your videos on this car. It is because of you and Bjorn that I decided on the Ioniq.

I bought a 3 year old Ionoiq about a year ago.
Agree with your 12v battery criticisms & the lack of an app. In addition I find the Auto Wiper a bit erratic in very light rain & it could do with a rear wiper.
Also difficult to see the extremeties of the car - the rear camera & parking sensors are essential.
As you say there are too many "bongs" but I wish to Active Lane Keep Assist WOULD bong when it disengages!
I'm in the south of the UK & haven't seen any snow this winter.
Apart from these minor criticisms I love this car. The efficiency is really quite astonishing. As electricity prices increase, the efficiency will become more important.

Love these videos! Thanks for making another one. Some things I think should be emphasized:
    - The Ioniq 38kWh does have the bluelink app.
    - Add to the bad: weak high beam headlights.
    - Add to the ugly: lots of old non-LED lamps in the interior.
Sad to hear that you're selling it. I remember seeing a German test where the poor grip on snow was very evident. Lucky that's not an issue here in there Rheinland 🙂 I'm also not bothered by the lack of an app as I can reach it with EVnotify from a part of the house when it's charging in the garage (which is quite warm).
Thanks for the great work making these videos over the last year, helping me decide on the Ioniq last year. No regrets here!

Noooo! Where will I go now for my Ioniq tips videos? Totally agree about this being the best value for money EV. We have had ours for a year and its been great. No traction issues in the south of England where we live though. Hope you enjoy your new car.

Thanks for your informative videos! About the drunk issue, there is an aftermarket frunk you can fit under the hood. It's s small but it works for the storages of the cables.

I know I'm late to the game here but the thing with losing your grip in slippery conditions, at least for me, is that when a tire loses grip, going up a slippery driveway for example, the traction control cuts the power to the drive wheels to the point where the car can't go forward at all. That's a poorly designed traction control system, in my opinion. But there is, however, a button for disabling the traction control. Just press it and moderate the power and wheel spin with the accelerator instead. Just don't forget to turn it on again afterwards.

    Love the video 😀👍
    Comments:
I am really fond of the gear selector
You can disable some of the 'bing-bong' audio feedback
    I like the classic buttons
To help with grip you can review your tyre choice and lower tyre preasure.
Have some storage added in the frunk (I know it is small) and around it (engine bay area, in front of the 12v battery).
I keep extra washing liquid there, the 3 phase charging cable, a bottle of water just in case, tyre repair kit and tow hook, etc...
All this extra weight, combined with a gripping tyre, adequate tyre preassure and the use of Eco Mode (wich slows the reaction of the throttle), makes for a good result. At least I had no issues with that so far.

Yes, the grip is not really an ioniq issue pr se but more a AWD vs FWD issue for us and where we live :)

Great car indeed, worst things for me are the bad sound isolation, especially from the rear, and the lack of an app. One thing i love that you didn't mention is the customizability of regen. I drive on zero regen and love it, my wife drives on mode 1. In the mountains i would probably use mode 2.
    Thanks the vids so far!

Ah, yes I did not mention regen as I just put regen on max on all EVs :)
It makes sense here since it is so hilly, but also on normal driving I tend to save 10-25% of the energy with mode 3.

Hi, just came across to your video. Nice car summary, well done. I'm in the UK (trying to convert all the figures) and just recently bought a 2016 model with 96,000km from the first owner for 8,800EUR to replace our Smart ForTwo City car. Unbelievably It still can do 212km on full charge. I'm very impressed I'm getting 7.89km/kWh on over all average. it can even do better on each trips.
I was first looking at the Zoe's but with a lot of different variations and it was very hard to find a suitable one lot of them still under a battery lease, so only the later models but they where significantly more expensive and some of them even had no fast charging capability. Then I looked the BMW i3's again very expensive if I wanted a decent range I had to go for the later model or with a range extender. Also looked at the Leaf's as in the UK we have a huge selection but I was not impressed with the range or economy. The 40kWh Leaf can do the same range then this 28kWh but with a less and less common CHaDeMo connector and up to 50kWh speed. And very unexpectedly I came across to this car. I didn't know this car even existed, I've seen a few of these previously but most of them were Hybrids and used them as Taxis. I will only use the car on a short daily commuting but its good feeling that if I need to take it for a longer journey to Scotland (up to 400km-500km) I can still do it with confidence and wont have to stop many times for a long charging sections. I'm planning to have another car for long journeys or sell this and get a PHEV with a decent electric range. But for now I'm sure I will keep it for a year or two.

There's a company in Ireland that makes a frunk for the Ioniq. It replaces the motor cover and gives a decent amount of storage.

Thank you for your videos which I love. I have a question, I'm thinking of going to Norway this summer. France Norway. I would even like to go to the North Cape. Do you think this possible in Ioniq 28? Thank you and good day. Axel

Bummer you're selling it. I got a 2019 Ioniq back in November - I like it a lot, for all the obvious reasons.
Regarding Traction Control: Have you tried with TC disabled? Sometimes a light foot (and ECO mode to have a "lazy" throttle) can get better results than the computer.

Hi, Do you use OBD2 for EVNotify every day? What about consumption, will OBD2 dongle makes 12V battery Drain?

Hello did you have studded tires on the ioniq? If not, do you think it would have made a difference in the place where you live / the driving conditions?. I have a gen2 Prius and the traction control really cuts the power to the wheels.
When it's alot of snow and ice on the hill going to my house I sometimes can't get up. But I can park down in the road. Not a real issue whit an ice car. But with an ev I need to charge at the house.

You can try disabling the traction control. The Ioniq has a button for it, so maybe the Prius does too.
