Makes me think how hysteria was a female psychological disease for unsatisfied women. I thought we grew beyond that. That we understood that there were other underlying dissatisfactions for the "symptoms".
If we are going to reason like this and let toxic masculinity become a disease we have to at least reintroduce hysteria since the underlying reasoning of neglecting someone's dissatisfaction because of their inability to express themselves is the same.

This sounds like a good comparison on the surface, they share similarities but it's a false equivalence. You cannot equate the current mass ideological indoctrination program, globalised through both the globalisation of culture and technology, and being driven by a slew of logical fallacies and manipulative double-think from the majority of the populace who censor and shutdown any allowance of conversation with the systems of a primitive mental health "service" (for lack of a better term) who performed abhorrent acts of control and probably gaslighting under the guise of what we now retrospectively consider bigotry. One is a mass mechanism of social control affecting every soul on the planet for better or worse, and one is you moralising over the actions of people long dead. If you thought more critically and a little deeper perhaps you would not behave in such a way.

@@chideraalexanderdex547 well the toxicity I'm talking about is specifically gendered.
Like toxic masculinity would be a guy not being able to cry publicly because it would make the people around him uncomfortable to see a man cry.
Toxic femininity would be a woman crying loudly in public to get attention and have someone else solve their problem. Not a common thing, for sure but I hope it gets at what I'm saying. Or another example that is more common would be a woman that constantly infantelizes herself so she can be taken care of by a stronger man.
People who have toxic gender traits are woman and man and are both vapid and annoying people who overly rely on gender characteristics to keep a sense of self and control.
Now why do we only talk about toxic masculinity? It's because the feminist movement is organized, woman are aware of the problem they face (rape, abuse, financial reliance) these are all problem that guys don't really have and these are problems caused mostly by gender expectations on the guy side.
On the other hand, There is no man's rights movement for man's rights. It's mostly just opposition to women's rights which is weird and nothing else. That's why masculinity is so weird nowadays.
We know it needs to change but no one wants to point a direction.

That being a potential healthy instinct that is being acted on inappropriately. No one is medicating it but they are defining it so therapists can discuss it.

This is a weak point by Slavoj Zizek, it's not a philosophical question it's a scientific one. You can justify this point either way, (lo and behold he's justifying his bias) what you need is an objective measuring stick.
That said, I think the term "toxic masculinity" is idiotic, because it describes how other people see it, not what it is.
If we called a wild animal growling at people "Toxic animality", we would be ignoring the fact that it is an animal in distress.
If you call it what it is, something like masculine emotional retardation, you would understand it's a social construct that specifically stunts men's ability to effectively convey emotions in a way that instills empathy.

When he mentioned courage, he meant that the person is angry because of a difficult situation but that person is not willing to disclose the details of the issue to others ... why? There are multiple "why's", for example, to avoid wasting time, or because he already knows how to solve it but hates what he needs to do to resolve it, or does not want to worry/trouble/bother others with his problems, etc. Being under pressure can make you say things and behave in a way that while being ok, you would not ... and the troubled person only wants to solve the issue .... so yeah, it takes courage to decide to face your own big problems by yourself without anyhelp, this is done by both men and women and it is not toxic masculinity as they say.

@@vapingfury4460 you're wrong men are taught to have self control about their emotions and to be resilient. What's actually lacking is not that men are taught one or the other is that they aren't taught feminine traits too. They aren't considered important.
They are only taught only one set of qualities. The boys shouldn't cry is a symptom of that not a cause.
Also you have to consider that parents can't really expect society to change.
For boys crying in public or even in private like women do (unless it's for a very specific reason like the death of someone ) does more damage than good in the long run. I personally have had that experience and because of that I was treated as lesser and bullied in middle school. Stopped doing that in highschool and became tougher at least in appearance and I didn't get so.
A classmate did what I did at middle school and became the joke of the class and the one who bullied him the most. Girls did that too and sometimes yes he did get sympathy just like I did at middle school especially from girls but eventually in the long run that was turned into disrespect, treated as less and sometimes even a bullying person which you got sympathy from .
Boys who do not cry or show vulnerability are usually much better off because of this.
In order for culture to change you need several years maybe decades even so as individuals boys and men living now in most of the world don't have the luxury of crying or showing too much vulnerability because they will face grave consequences.
One of the reasons why some men become incel is absolutely this because they were hurt by men and women because of showing those emotions and insecurities. It's not men not being able to show these emotions that causes the problem is the treatment they get after showing these emotions and vulnerabilities.
Men who were wiser and at least pretended to suck it up in public have had it much better.
So no in many cases boys as individuals should suck it up ( at least only in appearance ) at because the alternative considering the current culture will give much more severe consequences. Sorry but you can't possibly give an advice like that to boys like many people say it's okay to show vulnerability or not . It's depended on the world being a better place which it's not.
I took that advice and I paid dearly because of it.

Gender is a social construct, there's no use to identify as a helicopter because there's no behaviours or attributes associated with it, unlike genders like man or women there are behaviours and expectations associated with it, like wearing dresses or suits, how you talk or present yourself in general in which society identifies you as a man or woman.

But American psychology isn't trying to medicalize that; they're trying to prescribe mental care to men who enclose themselves and act out aggressively compulsively or habitually even when the situation has no call for said behavior.
At that point it's a pattern of behavior that serves no purpose, marginalizes the male in question, and continues to harm their mental health and possibly the physical health of those around them.

Feeling anxious is a normal thing, but when it becomes a daily occurance, when you find it difficult to function, then its a disorder.
Now i havent heard of toxic masculinity beeing medicalised personally, but even if it is, it doesent mean that masculinity itself is beeing medicalised, and its not.
Toxic masculinity is not when you occasionally act out from frustration, but a persistant attitude that a person has towards the world.
He is conflaiting courage with agression.
What is a mental illness other than a really amped up version of an othrwise normal behaviour?
I think the lable of "toxic masculinity" is misleading, because thease traits in an amped up way can be had by woman as well.
The key is that masculinity becomes toxic when it starts beeing harmful to the person or others.
Is courage when we hurt others and ourselves?
    No.
Sure that might be a concequence of our actions, but it surely isnt a defining feature.

So I think Zizek may be misreading a bit into what APA said about it.
Just like 'rotten apple' doesn't mean all apples are rotten, but rather that 'that specific apple is rotten', toxic masculinity doesn't mean all masculinity is toxic, but rather that there are some things masculinity precribes that are toxic(i.e. harmful, specifically, harmful to those who are masculine i.e. mostly men).
So yeah, being courageous is not something that's a part of toxic masculinity(But remember, if someone demands that men be courageous no matter what just because they're a man, then this will hurt men and by definition, will be an example of toxic masculinity.)
Some examples of toxic masculinity are-
    "boys don't cry"
    "man up"
    "men don't show emotions"
"stop being a sissy. women don't like feminine men"
You might notice that this socialisation leads to many problems in men when they grow up, which is why it's called toxic. It hurts us, it's toxic to us. Of course, there's always positive aspects of masculinity, just as there's toxic femininity and femininity that isn't toxic.
    Toxic femininity-
"don't eat too much, women should not be fat"
    "act like a lady"
    "don't talk loud"
"stop being so boyish, men don't like women who are intimidating"

    • @MyPrideFlag
      @MyPrideFlag 8 месяцев назад +3

So your definition of healthy masculinity is being weak, not controlling your emotions, being feminine.
While healthy femininity is not giving fuck about anything including your own health and looks, not giving a fuck about other people, have no manners and be masculine lol.
Generally all the things you called toxic are good advises, especially those for men if you phrased them differently. Be strong, be brave, be disciplined, be stoic in public places, don't let minor things bother you. All you have to do is not humiliate someone because they're weak but help them get strong.
I'm not a woman and I don't feel competent to give advises but being thin (healthy) and polite (don't talk loud, don't be annoying) are good qualities in both men and women.

    • @MyPrideFlag
      @MyPrideFlag 8 месяцев назад

Also, how do you want to treat "toxic masculinity"?
How do you medically treat someone who's a douche?
In normal countries and normal countries and normal cultures (for example those based on christian values and codex of chivalry) being agressive for no reason is just deemed wrong and that's it.
How do you want to treat that?
And who decides if you're a "toxic male".
      You neo-marxist are going nuts.

Toxic masculinity is for example, our of manliness, refusing to ask for directions when you are lost, or not reaching out to other during difficult emotional times. That is not courage it's self destructive and derives from the social male gender identity

Dude, you're talking out of your ass here. Wanting to do things your way of your own accord isnt toxic. Frustrating to passengers of your vehicle? Sure - but not toxic.
Wanting to handle your emotions on your own instead of being reliant on others isnt toxic.
You wimps literally call everything toxic that you are incapable of doing yourself. Just so you know, most people don't agree with your dumb ideologies, so you can stop and grow up now.
