- Guillain-Barré syndrome, also called GBS, nursing review lecture for NCLEX and nursing school: This lecture covers symptoms, causes, nursing interventions, and treatments for Guillain-Barré syndrome.
Guillain-Barré syndrome is an autoimmune neuro condition where the immune system attacks the nerves in the peripheral nervous system and cranial nerves.
What specifically on the nerve cell is the immune system attacking? The immune system, which was attacking an illness, starts to confuse the cranial and PNS nerves for the illness and attacks the myelin sheath (demyelination occurs), which affects nerve transmission. The myelin sheath normally functions as an insulator to help nerve transmission, but when they become damaged this leads to a decrease or complete loss of nerve signaling.
Why is this happening? Guillain-Barré syndrome can happen in any person at any age! There is no cure, but treatment (IV immunoglobulin therapy or plasmapheresis) can help decrease signs and symptoms.
Guillain-Barré syndrome tends to peak with its signs and symptoms at about 2 weeks, and then remyelination starts to occurs (so the patient's signs and symptoms will start to resolve). Most patients will fully recover to their baseline in 1-2 years. The road to recovery can be long and difficult for many patients.
In GBS, most patients report experiencing a previous infection. This is usually one to two weeks from the onset of signs and symptoms associated with GB. Illnesses reported are either an upper respiratory or gastrointestinal infection.In addition, experiencing the Epstein-Barr virus, HIV/AIDS, or receiving the flu or swine flu vaccine have been associated with Guillain-Barré syndrome.
There are various types of GBS and cases can vary from mild to very severe. The most common type in the United States is called
Acute Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy (AIDP), which is what we will concentrate on in this lecture. Patients who experience this type of GBS tend to have paralysis/weakness or a tingling sensation that starts symmetrically in the lower extremities that will migrate upward over time. It can progress to where the patient actually becomes paralyzed.
How is Guillain-Barré syndrome diagnosed? An electromyography and nerve conduction study along with a lumbar puncture (elevated protein without elevated white blood cells)
Guillain-Barré syndrome symptoms include: tingling or numbness in lower extremities that spread upward over time to other areas of the body (paresthesia), absent or diminished reflexes, paralysis, facial paralysis, dysphagia, dysarthria, severe muscle pain/cramps, respiratory failure, autonomic issues etc.
Complications can arise from Guillain-Barré syndrome which include: respiratory failure, infection, blood clots, pressure ulcers (injuries), facial paralysis, aspiration, difficulty swallowing or speaking, urinary retention, autonomic dysfunction (orthostatic hypotension, paroxysmal hypertension, dysrhythmiasetc.), constipation etc.

@Jmac Blaze Oh my gosh. I hope you are fully recovered now. I am going into nursing so thank you for sharing your story. It must have been really scary for you to have gone through this. Especially having almost choked on your belt. I do not know if I will end up caring for someone with GBS, but this was really helpful to hear what the experience was like from someone who went through it. I will definitely be sure to check my patient's belt or take it off when possible for someone with GBS or any other paralysis.

RN here and severe AIDP (GBS)-2020 survivor. You never know how grateful you are to be able to walk your dog, walk around the unit, etc until you’re nearly paralyzed from the neck down.
I'm not a nursing student. My aunt was recently diagnosed with GBS. This video gave me great understanding of what is happening (without having to dig through webpages and articles for information), so that I can give my family hope and the strength it needs right now. Thank you.

Please pray for a boy in a hospital in Dublin who has been diagnosed with this Syndrome . It can be very for the scary for the patient . It seems to take a year or 2 to heal. Praying for complete healing

I had GBS when I was 10 years old. I was misdiagnosed by my doctor and it wasn't until 3 weeks later the right diagnosis was given. By then I was almost completely paralyzed and my left lung collapsed. When they had to do a emergency trake (idk how to spell the full name) and they nicked my thyroid glands and I almost bled to death. I was in the hospital for 3months before I could be released. Took an additional 4 months to walk on my own. I actually got it 2 more times after that but never as bad. My insurance wouldn't cover me in the second and third time because they claimed it couldn't come back, so the doctor diagnosed it over again as cidp only because my insurance wouldn't cover me otherwise. It was so painful to the slightest touch. At the time that I had it, it wasn't a very known condition, so the nurses and doctors thought that pumping me full of enough pain killers to knock out a horse would help, but it didn't, because it was nerve pain, that kind of pain cannot be relieved with pain killers. The nurses actually told my mother that I wasn't feeling any kind of pain, thankfully my mother knew better and paid attention when I was bawling my eyes out as the nurses were tossing me around the bed when changing the bedding. I had no problem peeing and pooping, aside from not being to move to be able to walk. Now I have no reflexes, nerve damage so I don't feel pain as easily, and asthma.
I never received any shots nor did I have any infections to trigger GBS, only infection that happened was a bladder infection I got while I was paralyzed in the hospital. It just happened. I also had 3 spinal taps in order to detect if I had GBS.
I'm 28, almost 29 now, so it's been so many years since I had it.
Treatment I received was immunoglobulin, PT, OT, and speech therapy.

How long did it take for you to be better?
Yeah I came down with Gilliam Barr syndrome in 2007, Spent 4 months in ICU, three of those months were in a coma. After that I was transferred to a nursing home where I spent seven years. But in the last seven years I've been in my own apartment. I'm still confined to a wheelchair, my fingers are warped due to the Gillian Bar syndrome. I have nerd damage in my face, Still have nerve damage in my legs, and arms. But I'm alive. And the few doctors I've talked to that are well versed in Gilliam Bar syndrome, said I had the worst case of it they seen with somebody surviving. But good video!

My mom too. She’s still in a wheelchair a year later but walked in to get the vaccine.
I am recovering from GBS. I was I the hospital for 68 days. This video describes my experience exactly. After 5 months I’m still having tingling in my feet, and numbing in my face.
My tingling passed after 5 to 6 mo i think. Pretty much recovered everything besides the face. Had it last year. I was about 35 days in the hospital because of respiratory failure for the most part.

The last time I have seen a "Nurse" was when I went for my appendix removal, it had burst. This was a few years ago maybe 2015 or so and the care was very professional. But since then my wife has been in the same hospital for fractures a couple of times because of osteoporosis. Her care was lousy at best. The last fracture she asked to be released because I could do as well as they did. I was 67 or so and she 66. I can only assume most were not certified as Nurses. I think a lot of the Nurses had retired and replaced with whoever was available for hire .When this video started I thought you were a doctor or at least a P.A. You are a great teacher so I assume a great Nurse.
Diagnosed with a severe case of GBS in Aug., 2021. Still recovering. Tingling still in my feet, and learning how to walk again. I was a healthy female, that exercised and ate healthy foods. Also, still dealing with partial face paralysis. All the symptoms described in this video are what I experienced. I am hopeful for a full recovery.

I am in nursing school studying this now and my daughter had this in 2005 when she was 11. This is the BEST explanation I have EVER heard. I’m 5 months out now and yes these descriptions were exactly what I had. Almost went to ICU it got better. Had the facial issues too. I’m walking decent and back to work over a month now.

I had my bout with GBS in September 2020. I was on a ventilator and paralyzed. Thought i would never walk again. Scary disease. I still have the tingles in my hands and feet.

Interesting and important information. I have a 72 year old friend, suffering with this right now. They put a trach, so he can do therapy. Kind of interesting though he was having some neuropathy issues last winter as well. Chronic alcoholic. He may have had some intestinal issues I don't know I'll have to ask him about that. Generally he stayed home and drank he rarely went out. So I'm kind of wondering how all this happened. Learned a lot thank you

This video is beneficial for the post-lumbar puncture precautions ALONE, especially for those with a heart for neuro or emergency nursing from the jump, not to mention the thorough delivery on GBS! Well done, Sarah! 👍 Guillain-Barre can be REALLY INTIMIDATING for a new nurse, but you'll absolutely come across at least a patient with a history of it. It's important to keep an eye on the progression of active GBS, prioritizing things like respiratory distress over rehab for muscle atrophy. I absolutely LOVE the "Gradual Block of Sensation" acronym as well!! 👌
Gotta study diseases for revalida, your videos help me understand the pathophysiology better.

all i can say, i wished you can make and published a n NCLEX RN review book. i compared your lectures to other review books but yours is far more better. ex. GBS everything is there with medications and lab test, with drawings. looking forward to that.

I think I may have this. Numbness on belly area and Dow both legs very little under arms and see on groin area. IDK what to do it's been about 6 days.

This is terrifying. I had a horrible reaction to the 2018-19 Influenza vaccine. I was so afraid I would have GBS.
I had the flu vaccine, nearly 12 hours later I spiked fever. It grew to 104.5. I was better the next day. The only reason my doctor could give me was possibly having a reaction to the preservatives in the vaccine.
I had a buccal swab to determine any allergies. It came back eggs were highest sensitivity. So now I am scared to death to take another vaccine, ever again. Thanks for this valuable information.

I had gbs in the 80s. Even now I still have no dorsi of plantar flexion.. I have very little movement in my toes, almost indiscernible, and of course atrophy of the lower limbs
