I don't expect journalists to be experts on complicated engineering topics, but I think they should talk to someone who does. A lot of these articles are indistinguishable from corporate press releases. The one question that they should ask is "Why has nobody done this before?".
Journalists should research what they are writing about before spewing their uninformed opinions for others to read but real journalism died years ago.
I really like how this device they were selling was basically 1-liter plastic cup with a little solar powered deeliebopper on the top that supposedly filled up this 1-liter cup while you rode around on a bike or something. My daughter, with her high school math and science, understood the feasibility of this kind of project. I wouldn't say so. Critical thinking needs more teaching but that doesn't equate to poor science education. I've had bags of science education but I likely wouldn't have thought this to be snake oil or wouldn't have thought to look into it. I think you need both an investigative mind and the knowledge with which to delve. I don't think it's as clear cut as poor science education
@@joselaw6669 I hope this is satire? DAE STEM subjects guys?
Music, history and language have value. Do you not listen to Music, do we not learn from history, do we not learn from each other across language barriers? Science and technology doesn't exist in a vacuum, the world has so much to offer.

I'm raising money to put this self emptying bottle I invented into production.
It empties automatically without you having to drink from it and doesn't even need sunlight to work.
I already have a crude working prototype but now I need money to put it into production.
Well if it's crude then it's not a prototype at all.
Richard Gates it’s obviously a prototype that only needs a little bit of our support in order for it to function properly and succeed in the market
Where's your IndieGoGo site? I'm willing to back.
Damn. Trying to think of a pun, but I’m coming up empty

It should have offered an included a juice pack squeezer.

unlike the insides of a fontus bottle, that money went right down the drain.

Put an insufficient photovoltaic panel on a swamp cooler and, boom: Solar Freakin' Air Conditioning.
Surely you meant Solar Freakin' Legion-Aire Conditioning. :)
"flexible goal" - that is a red flag for any project.
Step one: get a barely passing grade in physics. Step two: GoFundMe
Quite the opposite sadly is the truth... high grades in physics today claims he solved the dark matter/energy mystery. And the guy with low grade has common sense enough to understand how thermodynamics work... strange world we live in.... the majority believes the liars and accuses the innocent.....
Step one is marketing 101.
@@NJ-wb1cz exactly! And often people who barely pass physics while understanding the principles usually skip marketing classes and don't care about the "science of bullshit" that is marketing.
@Daniel Eliahu Shapiro what you just stated is the exact opposite of the Dunning-Kruger effect and is far less likely than the reverse.

How stupid should you be to write a comment like this?

Lol what does that mean?
No, I'm saying if it were that easy to pull drinkable water out of the air it would have been done long ago.

This event, and this video.
Well, if nothing else they were good at marketing. Kind of impressive to be able to pull in $300,000 for something that a highschooler could debunk.
Yeah, it sure shows the value of eye candy. Conversely, the science nerds (who actually know what they're doing), are lousy are marketing.
To the backer who told Fontus to do research before starting a campaign. Maybe they should've done some research on the stupid product they were backing.

Using dessicants to "collect water" requires separating water from the dessicant, which takes even more energy than simple cooling and condensation, even more impractical.
they do not use actual dessicants as in cat litter boxes... it's more a description of how the dehumidifier works, i think most of the examples shown use something like piezzo elements to cool down air and get its water content thereby to condense
@@Whatareyouareyou I've read tons of old Popular Science articles. It's always been this bad.

Eventually, even stupidity evaporates in reality.
But it is also a zero sum game and ALL dishonest fraudsters need to share in it ;-) Not much is left for every single one of the scammers.
I love these "Busted" episodes!
"self-filling water bottle" goes bankrupt.
Who would've thought.
I really like how this device they were selling was basically 1-liter plastic cup with a little solar powered deeliebopper on the top that supposedly filled up this 1-liter cup while you rode around on a bike or something. And the scammers were too cheap to even give their backers some novelty cups or canteens shaped like the prototypes.
"Pulls water particles from the air". The word you're looking for is "molecules".
I don't doubt theres definitely particles in that molecule soup lol
He's just sarcastically using the same terminology the scammers are. It's a long running joke that flies over the heads of some. Next, solar freakin roadways!
A molecule is a particle in the same way that you can have a particle of dust.

MrJason005 Yeah, thats what pisses me right off.
My daughter, with her high school math and science, understood the feasibility of this kind of project. We made the old fashioned plastic wrap in a square shape pulled taut then a few rocks lay on the surface with the sun condensing groundwater into vapor then back into more clean water dripped into a cup. And there are "engineers" and "professors" trying to make wine from water (subtle jab). I think the credibility of some of our institutions of higher learning should be put on notice. What culture is present to inspire support from those wide-ranging list of science publications who supported this idea???
This is how water was made during the Korean war by some, it only made a few drops, but by God would you appreciate a few drops.
Kids today are pressured into thinking they are discovering things that were in fact already done before and dropped for a reason.
Could you imagine creating a VHS player in today's society, or how about the first black and white television.
In the old days, you would have to build it before selling it, today, ideas of prototypes are the finished products.
It won't end well.

They are laughing their asses off as they scammed people for over 300k
And possibly from people who basically like the content but find it to be long winding and reptitive.
They would have done better buying 100K of the life straw and sending it to Africa, snake oil merchants the lot of them.
Could have used that money laying pipes, building wells, or just buying water filters.
Yeah, better to send, as I remember hearing it somewhere, a lorry of filters and purification tablets.

All of these kickstarters remind me of a device I "invented" as a kid. I drew a handheld laser cutter that had a starter battery, but had a photocell on the other end to absorb the laser energy, and recycle it forever. Basically a laser perpetual motion machine. It was not any less feasible than other kickstarters I've seen such as this one, maybe I should start a campaign? Making the CG rendering would be a piece of cake, that's all you need to get rich, right?
I still can't believe Innovation Nation actually backed this
