- For my Presets visit: johnnathancord... @BOSSinfoglobal are of course very well known for a great number of legendary pedals, and are still reasonably priced. Ross from Yamaha recommended I check out the OD3 a while ago, and I think it's a little bit of a hidden gem in the Boss drive pedal line up. Please leave some comments of other pedals that you think folks need to know about?
Also in use here, the Walrus Audio ACS1 for the first couple of bits, then the HX Stomp, and a Vox AC15 during the actual video.

Whenever somebody puts out a video praising OD-3, I give automatic thumbs up! I seriously love the OD-3 and people are missing out - yes, even compared to ever popular BD-2, my first choice. Johnathan, when I first found you I thought your tone would be a perfect match for OD-3, seriously. Man it sounds even better with your playing. Cheers!
The OD-3 is a great lesser-known Boss pedal 😊
I think a lot of people at the moment seem to think that Boss isn’t good because it’s cheaper. There’s some real gems in their lineup and they’ve gotten to the status that they have because of how good they are
Thanks for the recommendation for this. Literally the OD pedal I never knew I needed.
Perfect!!! Beautiful!!! congrats from Brazil !!! Paulo
The pedal certainly sounds excellent, but your blues runs are incredible, love the melodic touches you add ❤
what a lovely lullaby, at least for a middle-aged guitarist like me...,thanks...💓
The OD-3 is my go to overdrive. It’s always on my board. I’m a huge, long time Boss fan.
I just got an used Boss OD-3 at a local shop. And after just 1 minute of trying it with my amp, I was so happy with this beauty... it´s a keeper, and it will throw way some botique pedals. It has been very hard to find a good match with my amp, and only a very few OD have been working with my rig. No more expensive OD pedals for me for the next few years hopefully.
I´ve had 2 Jan Rays, 1 Barbeshop, some Timmy clones, a Blues Driver, some Ibanez TS. And so far, the OD3 sounds really good. I am very impressed. Finally could found an OD that does very well almost everything, boosting, light to medium overdrive, and it´s very pleasent harmonically thru the all spectrum. I almost don´t use my strat bridge pup and with the OD3 it´s so musical. It made me remember me some nice tracks from the 90´s.
Most folks underestimate the genius behind Boss pedals. And 9 times out of 10, you can't beat their price point. Never owned an OD-3 but have used the SD-1, OD-1 and BD-2.
Nice demo.
A very refreshing video. Wonderful to see a video focusing on a classic, yet, inexpensive pedal. This pedal has been on my mind for a while. Your tone with it is beautiful through whichever amp. I have a silver sky, so I guess it would sound similar with the OD3. Thanks for posting. Oh, your intro tunes were gorgeous.
Seriously, I had the OD3 on every board iteration for at least 10 years.
I had the OD3, loved sooo much but had to sell it. I'll get another as soon as I can.
Great playing!!! love your videos.
This guys playing is unreal. Well done sir !
Love both OD3 and SD1.
I just got an SD1, it seems to only sound good at higher gain? What are your thoughts
@@hosoiarchives4858 you mean it sounds better with a cranked up amp, as a boost? Or that it sounds good when the gain knob is almost at max gain? Sorry English isn't my mother language 🤣😅
@@Lalairu lol it’s all good bro. I have an SD1 and really I want an overdrive that works well into a clean amp with low overdrive gain on the pedal. The SD 1 isn’t that great with low gain on the pedal, when you set it past 12 it starts to sound good though. Just wondering how different the OD3 sounds
@@hosoiarchives4858 I see! I tried the OD3 a long time ago. The SD1 might work better as a boost for a cranked amp (I got some nice sounds with from clean settings though), but the OD3 might work better as an overdrive. I remember a friend of mine told me that sometimes the SD1 didn't feel "enough" , like it needed some punch. You might also want to try the BD2 or the Fulltone OCD. Which amp are you sing btw? Cheers :D
He can play thru a Tuna-can and make it sound good = such a tasty guitarist. I did an extensive overdrive comparison and I was very-impressed with: Boss Blues Driver Waza, Way Huge Green Rhino, J. Rockett Blue Note-Pro, and (my all time favorite) Barber Gain Changer S.R. - no shortage of great overdrives these days. Loads of choices & options.
Beautiful, melodic playing.. reminiscent of Eric Johnson’s tone, phrasing and use of unusual intervals ❤
My current favorite "overdrive" is what I got on my HX Stomp by dialing in the Ventoux Amp. I added the Minotaur on one of my Snapshots for a "grunting" lead, and combined it with a little Helioshere Delay and Dynamic Hall Reverb. The results are absolutely stunning - The best I've ever gotten, and so easy to dial in. Sounds like a real Boutique Amp. Played on a Strat with noiseless stacked single coil pickups (i.e. humbuckers).
I'm defining "grunting" as overdrive that is somewhere between breakup and saturation, where it sort of sounds like the guitar and Amp circuits are having a low pitched, growly, dynamic conversation.
SD1 and OD3 are great. Boss makes great Pedals
I love the tension that builds all the way until the drums hit. Wow.
The OD3 is just so damn good, I can't see myself ever taking it off my board.. btw absolutely beautiful playing! Will be "borrowing" some of your lines haha.. :D
beautiful demo and incredible playing. long time od-3 fan and advocate here. i have 3 of them that i use in difference rig configurations.
I have two of them. One for backup.
I have so many delay options, but my dd-3 lives on the board because it just does that thing that I can't get over. So good.
I bought a Boss OD-3, looking forward to trying it with my Squier Affinity Strat. Cheers.
The OD-3 is an excellent pedal, as is the Boss BD-2 Blues Driver. The OD-3 matches best with single coils and the BD-2 is better suited for Humbuckers on tube amps. To my ear the OD-3 creates a fat, smooth and creamy overdrive that rings out like 70's rock. The harmonic chime is spectacular with great sustain. On humbuckers I keep the gain all the way down and push up the level and it's an awesome sound on a clean amp. On the bridge pickup it sounds best on the hummies. Too tubby and muddy anywhere else. And it sings beautifully throughout the gain stage on single coils. It's a great overdrive.
Long time fan of the OD3. So much versatility from just level, drive and tone. Check out Chellee pedals. Totally impressive, not overpriced - no affiliation.
me too, got 2 of them ,just in case...someone wrote he would like an OD-3 with the Metal Zone EQ, I myself have thought about the Waza Metal just for the EQs sake, but even combined with the OD-3 methinks the result for me( cleanish Jazzy to (possibly heavier leads) wouldnt be perfect cause the Metal is quite sharpish...: and:
the Boss OD-3 is soo well designed!! I have put accentuating pedals after it, but I do prefer it as a darkish Jazz pedal!
( the only pedal after it I like is the mighty DOD Looking Glass, a FET-pedal itself! It makes the Jazziness of the OD-3 a bit cooler! without changing too much character...)
I have my Mad Prof Simble always on( Clean) before it, an optional Fender Engager Boost for boosting and EQuing/sculpting, but:
SOME pedals are just so good by themselves( and my fav/fab 3 even go together!):
Mad Prof Simble > Boss OD-3 > DOD/Shoe Looking Glass 😎
about SUSTAIN: just realized I dont have to buy the Metal Zone Waza: my Boss OD-1X has sustain even at lower gains! ( someone was even comparing them 2: no wonder!...)😎😎
I think the SD1 is another under-rated work horse of a pedal
The Tube Screamer “wishes” it was an SD-1! 😜
Awesome playing man , im actually thinking buy one of these..sounds amazing :D
I love the boss blues driver. I don’t think I’ve seen you play that, but I think it’s a quite popular pedal. And a pretty great one too.
Yeh I've not tried one of those.....good shout
Wish it had some sort of voicing switch that'd cut some of the low end. I love its gain character, but man does it have an absolute excess of mud when turned up
@@dicecard921 keep the tone, like not ever a quarter turn up, and play everything else wherever. Super good clean boost/edge or break up into whatever amp I’m using in my hx stomp.
@@John-e4p1x yeh doesn't the waza version have a switch for sumat?
@@John-e4p1x the Waza "custom" switch actually adds more bottom end lmao
Beautiful, dude! Awesome play as always
That strat sounds great. I'm jealous.
Great stuff always. You inspired me to get one a while back! Truetone vs-xo sleeper…
Might be controversial, but I’d go for the ProCo Rat! Most tend to use it as a high gain distortion or even fuzz… and it certainly does those brilliantly, but if you turn the gain right down, it does a beautiful light overdrive. The filter knob is also an incredible tone shaping tool. Also, they’re pretty cheap and built like a tank! About the only thing you can’t do is use it as a boost the way you would a TS or a Klon(e).
Yeh the filter control is wild!
Definitely ! It reacts super well to single coils when the gain is low and filter high !
I use a T-Rex Mudhoney in this manner which is a RAT-based circuit. This topology is very underrated for lighter to medium gain stuff.
People drool over the 1981 DRV... sometimes I wonder if they know it's a Rat
The more I watch this the more I love the od3. Mine is a pedal board staple
I've acquired several boss pedals over the last year. Really liking the dd3 digital delay at the moment
Nice Strat. Bit of Larry Carlton/Eric Johnson in the playing too.
Wow! Awesome. Enjoyed your playing. Well done.
Great playing and great tone, thank you
Sounds nice, beautiful playing.
DS1 can be a bit tricky but gain all the way down and tone very low works great with me strat and tele
Agree. For years I used just and OD-3 and DS-1 side-by-side and would toggle between them for variation but the trick to using the DS-1 especially is as you wrote, to keep the tone control low (i usually have mine at about 9:00 by default) and distortion/drive to taste. It really works quite well and is very sensitive to guitar volume control and cleans up really well when backing off on guitar volume. I'll try something else for awhile and I always come back to it.
It’s one of the most popular pedals of all time, and for some reason one of the most underrated pedals as well.
I own two that I picked up dirt cheap. Not that one really needs a “backup” when it comes to Boss pedals since they’re extremely durable, and widely available.
The XXXL long sleeve is cool. Understated look.
Boss OS 2 overdrive/distortion. Don't see many people using it. It's not great but I thought I would mention it since it covers kind of like 2 pedals in one for like 140 bucks. Kind of like having a ds1 and sd1 with a color knob that goes from overdrive to distortion.
Also Nobels ODR 1 or mini
I recently bought a BOSS BD2 and I am surprised how good it is. Never used a BOSS pedal before but I consider trying more of those. Also I would like to try a NOBELS ODR (would love to see this implemented in the HX stomp) ….
This playing and tone are absolutely delicious. Is it available anywhere outside of RUclips?
Both the od3 and the nobels odr-mini are sub 100 and nice drives
Completely out of context John, I strongly recommend you try the brand new Hiwatt DR103 plugin by Nembrini Audio. It is in sale 70% off until feb 28 (39,99$). This is honestly my favorite amp sim of them all. It’s similar to a Marshall Super Lead, but a LOT richer/fuller/thicker. Seriously INCREDIBLE! Personnaly, I’m using it with Archetype Tim Henson before and after for the pedals. Please get at least the demo, and i would love to hear your thoughts!
Cheers man!
Never tried the OD3, but my SD1 is slammin
My fave overdrive is the SD-1 as well! Underrated boost for JCM 800s and especially my Dual Rec.
thanks for showing the pedal with the VOX, I play thru ss amps, that might be a bit bright, so I`ll keep my BOSS OD-3!😎
THANK YOU AGAIN! been pondering about this pedal on and off..., for its EQ: for jazzy strat neck pup( well for my very balanced Yamaha Pacifica 112Vs.pickups..) and just a few nanominutes ago I tried it again: and: THE GUITAR VOLUME A BIT LOWER AND VOILA: perfect balanced EQ! still sounds a bit strat but VERY BALANCED JAZZY! I know guitars volume turned lower can make differences, but I always considered it kinda last refuge of the tone shaping, and Im sure theres better volume pots around than the ones in my Yamahas, but to get this Marvellous BOSS OD-3 do the thingy I wanna the pot reacts fine! also my treble pots can be adjusted a bit lower so thanks Yamaha! ( of course these are small exchangeabale parts...),
ordered a second Boss OD-3 due to all this meticulous trying out and for YOUr J Cordys vids, especially thanks for this AC15 vid, and keeping pushing the good 100€ Boss pedal...,
these Boss pedals( amongst others)are getting harder to buy new, due to worlwide component deficiency...,
just got lucky and found one new in Finland( my country)!
Jon, take care and thanks for : wondeful playing( Ive been around enough to know its not all in the gear except for them guitars that stay in tune whether play them or not((( sorry Mr Floyd Rose, tone too metallic...ha ha))),
Thanks Leo Fender for the floating bridge thou: I still use the springs, i think its the tone...and the orgaanism Strings/springs............, you can adjust the strings` playability and eq and tuning much more ( well I never use standard string sets but 9-11,5-15-22-30-42 and string last longer than in a locked setting, I never liked the locking tuners , evn the electric strings are meane to be bent and played and EACH string is different, so the balance is of importance...
SUMMA SUMMARUM: alea jacta est: I have orderd my second Boss OD-3, thanks to me and youJOnnathanc..., love, K
( I currently have 4 Yamaha pacificas 112V, if I had money Id buy a5th one, cheeriows, K the same
health wealth n happiness or was it the other way round, yey it was the other round in my youth, LOve!😎😎🎸🎸
I have one that I'll keep as much as I can, is very nice pedal
Ok that was tight I’m buying one tomorrow
Wampler Pantheon is worth checking out.
Yes,it’s a phenomenal drive…the Pantheon is worthy every penny!!!
so the recipe for swellness: Yamaha Pacifica 112v neck pup > Mad Prof Simble > Boss OD-3 > DOD Looking Glass ( Pheewy: finally got my FETness to work ( both Boss and DOD are FET-peds..)😎😎😎😎
Are you running the pedal on an amp or helix? It sounds great!!
Glove by EHX is pretty amazing if you wanna try it.
That's a clone of the Fulltone OCD apparently?
@@johnnathancordy yeah if you use the compulsive drive on the helix it sounds similar but it has more low end and is abit more aggressive in its character ☺️ I use it for crunchy rythmn or as a boost instead of the tube screamer variations because it doesn’t axe the low end.
Damn good playing! And it does sound great!
Excelent!!!!!!!!!!!!!! How do yo use rhe volume and the tone knobs for the first song in the video? ( beautiful)
Hi again, have ordered a second Boss Od-3, with gtrvol down a bit great EQ, hear:
with a Mad Professor Royal Blue Overdrive before it its even kinda cooler! I ve been wonderin about my two Mad Prof Royal Blues, but now: Perfect with Boss OD-3, cool n warm Jazzy witha strat neck pup!
( mind you; I have the Mad Prof Simble always on, but its quite neutral as my Zoom G2s eq is 10-0-10, go figure,
you asked us special pedal, maybe Mad Prof s are boutique, but You jc must try Mad Prof Royal blue tothe Boss Od3, they fit in that order,
I wasnt overly happy with the Royal, too rocky..., BUTT to Boss OD-3 its cool jzz even eq!
gonna shop for one now.....not overly happy with my Tube Screamer....too much mid....
My vote is for the Caline Pure Sky for something in the “transparent OD” vein… I’ve heard it referred to as a clone of either the Timmy or the Jan Ray, but having never played either of those, I can’t really comment on that.
I used an OD-3 for a short while… this video makes we want to dig it out again!
I've done a couple of vids on the Pure Sky - ruclips.net/video/rRYin_-Yys8/видео.html
one more pedal to dumble-coat this pedal:DOD/Shoe Looking Glass: first Boss OD-3, the nThe Dod: I was wondering if it woul be too much, both ofthem being FET-peds, but no: perfect finesse to the tone! ( kinda funny getting a wondrous boutique tone with two 100€ pedals!!) 😎😎
You talk about the Boss SD- 1 being the ask of Tube Screamer ...but do you prefer much more this one ? Don't You??
Holy hell - amazing. What strat is that!? Vintage? Custom Shop?… and is it for sale!?
May I know what delay/Reverb pedals and settings you used while playing solos ?
Que bien video, disfruté escuchando como toca la guitarra 🎸 muy bien tono
The TImmy is an all time great OD. But, even being affordable, compared to other boutique pedals, is still expensive to get. The MXR mini, is a licensed version of a V2 Timmy, and is just a great OD. And for Boss, the SD-1 is my Boss OD pedal of choice. Why? Because it can work with both Humbuckers and Single Coils.
Yeh the MXR Timmy was in the back of my mind when editing this!
I like the way you play. Do you plan to make a online course to teach how to play those licks?
Just… wow :)
It’s a good one!
I would love to see you when compare the od3 against a budgetfriendly dumble pedal like the Joyo Taichi for example
Love mine!
That strat is crying out for aged pickup covers !
Never mind the pedal - what model is the guitar? Sounds real nice.
On my PB forever i guess..., the bd2, ds2, RV6, a MD500 and a looper RC10...guess i'm a Boss geek, LOL
Teach me! Also what setting is the walrus on?
Nice strat
wow, what Strat do you have there though? 😍
Do you feel is harder to play in maple than rosewood?
Wow 👌
A comment on boutique pedals to any new people to the pedal world. They are all usually based off a classic pedal with additional features and or slight variation in sound.
On that note:
1. If you have a classic or basic pedal and think that the boutique version would sound better, that’s not necessarily true, it will sound different but if it better depends on if you prefer what they changed in the pedal.
2. Boutique pedals will come with extra features, if you see your self using those features then they are worth it. Otherwise, you might end up with all these features you’ll never use and would have been happier with the original classic of a different variation.
I hope this helps someone not make the same mistakes I did 😅 (sank a lot of money on pedals I regretted)
Go on Yobany let's talk some specifics? Would love to hear more?
@@johnnathancordy Yeah sure. A good example of this would be the Ts808 and a lot of the pedals based off of it (in this example the Paisley drive by Wampler). I used to think the Paisley drive was a clear "upgrade" to the Ts808, however depending how you use it, the slight change in tone may not be what you originally expect, or the extra controls on the Paisley drive might not even be engaged at all. Not saying the Paisley drive isnt good at all, in fact it very good at what it does. However, my point is, just because a pedal is a boutique version of a classic, it doesn't not guarantee it will do the job better then the classic pedal depending on your needs. Hope I made sense :) (in my personal guitar journey, this was the case with the EHX Russian muff and the EQD hoof. Where the EHX Russian muff fit my needs better then the boutique EQD take on the same pedal.)
Its good but lil to flubby at lowend, i luv my bd2 more
Need to try that BD2
What do you think about the Boss SD-1 compared to OD-3 ?
BOSS SD1 is quite Tubescreamerish with more low end...The BOSS OD3 is kind of a different thing - check one out if you get a chance
Is it noisy?
❤✌️✨
Do you feel that the OD-3 gives something significantly better than what you get from the Helix distortion models?
I can’t answer if it’s different. But I can answer that the OD-3 has a buffer, while you can fully by pass the helix model if that makes sense.
This can be a pro or con depending on your needs.
I've not really compared it side by side with anything, as far as my experience goes (king of tone/prince of tone/Klon/timmy etc) the helix models have been very close but I've not always been able to match stuff that there isn't an emulation in there for. Specifically I tried to do something in the Nobels ODR1 ballpark but I fell short and ran out of patience (I'm sure it could be done by someone less incompetent).
So the short version: if I could find a starting point that was relatively close, I might be able to do some sort of match?
@@johnnathancordy "Incompetent"... LOL, I've been trying to replicate certain solo sounds, but I just always get lost in the jungle. In addition to a HX Stomp I have a Blues Driver pedal and a TubeScreamer clone, and I get different nice things out of them, just never the thing I set out to replicate. For example this solo sound - no idea how he manages to sound like a trumpet or something ruclips.net/video/2CjTXtyaObA/видео.html I think there's a distortion pedal in the soup.
@@yzimsx I'm hearing some sort of chorus or something going on there too?
€120 all the same. Is that cheap? Maybe it is but people keep going on about this pedal like it's €80-100 range. Still want one though!!
Used these are pretty easy to find for like £50?
@John Nathan Cordy ya, in fairness guys are looking for 75 to €85 second hand here in Ireland. Been trying to beat a few down in price over the last couple hours but not working 😄😄
😍🥰❤️
the older DS1's sound killer into a dirty amp.
I've been playing guitar for almost 20 years and only recently bought my forst overdrive pedal, the Boss SD-1. Supposedly a classic. Everyone always praise it to the highest degree. My opinion, WHAT A PIECE OF CRAP! Sucks all the body and meat from the tone. I've read a lot of forums and people say that the Boss OD-3 is supposed to retain the body and low end of your sound/tone, being a more "transparent" overdrive than the SD-1. Maybe I'll give it a try at some point. I'm just so utterly disappointed on that horrendous SD-1.
❤️🙏🏻🕊🌿🌻🕯️🪶🎸🎼
Great playing, but I can’t stand anymore the “neck moving” guitarists, to me it’s really annoying, so yes… I will move to the next channel 😊
This isn't a band rehearsal, you don't need to announce your departure
