Inside of his book, adventurous Harold (Zachary Levi) can make anything come to life simply by drawing it. After he grows up and draws himself off the book’s pages and into the physical world, Harold finds he has a lot to learn about real life-and that his trusty purple crayon may set off more hilarious hijinks than he thought possible. When the power of unlimited imagination falls into the wrong hands, it will take all of Harold and his friends’ creativity to save both the real world and his own. Harold and the Purple Crayon is the first film adaptation of the beloved children’s classic that has captivated young readers for decades.
Directed by Carlos Saldanha and produced by John Davis, the live-action hybrid family adventure/comedy stars Zachary Levi, Lil Rel Howery, Benjamin Bottani, Jemaine Clement, Tanya Reynolds with Alfred Molina and Zooey Deschanel. The film’s screenplay is written by David Guion & Michael Handelman, based on the book by Crockett Johnson.

When I was a child, I had a nightmare about an evil, elderly Harold and his purple crayon. This trailer brings that memory back. Thanks.
What the- Cancel the question.😕
Dude, YOU are hilarious!!!
*UBASHAAAA*
Was your Harold keeping you from getting vaccinations? LOL
And this time it wasn't because the story entered public domain
Shouldn’t Harold be a child and not a 43 year old man 🤔?
That a good question
YES !!
Okay.. What if..
Here me out.. This might be hard to understand but.. Here me out..
He grew up? 🤯🤯🤯🤯
More laws you have to go through hoops for. Easier to have adults than kids on set. (Not as many labor laws)
@maxTheTimeSlasher I was thinking the same thing. Maybe this took place years later?
In India, back in the 90's, there was a TV show for children named "Shakalaka Boom Boom" in which the child protagonist had a magic pencil and whatever he drew with that pencil on a drawing sheet came to life/became real. We children loved it so much.
Yes bro 😂 they are copying us 😂😂
@@techjiteshThis was based on a very old book from the 50s💀

what this trailer needs is more loud taiko drums to emphasize just how AMAZING everything is, and how blown away you should be by all of the action!
It’s so obnoxious lol
they're definitely timpanis lol not taikos
Lmao
It's a stolen idea from Polish animated series "Zaczarowany Ołówek"!!!!!!!
It needs more cowbell.
They won't stop till they squeeze every last drop of nostalgia out of us, huh?

This didn't need to be anything more than what it already was, a great, simple, core childhood memory.
This is not an adaptation because the book itself actually exists within the story of this film and the Crayon gets out of the story and into the real world, causing all kinds of chaos. So it's not actually ruining anything the book established.
@@MrChaotic4 Thanks for the response, this is a very interesting point! I hadn't thought about how it is not technically an adaptation. regardless of what it is though, it stills feel unnecessary.
Thank god for the 5 second clip at the start telling me the trailer was about to start, I didn't know if the trailer was about to start!
So I have a theory.
The trailer says that those who write a story “creates a whole another world”. Well I believe this world has two layers to it. One is its “real world”, where its people live and what not. The other is its “fake world”, the void Harold is in as a child and as an adult. Since Harold is still wearing an adult fitted version of his pajamas that he had as a child, I believe Harold got trapped in the second layer and grew up there. That’s why he drew the “real world” door. Although one wonders why he didn’t drew it earlier (“I don’t do a lot of thinking indeed!)
I wish Purple Crayon drawing should be 2D animation in the real world
*UBASHA*
Or at least go with the style that spider verse did where it looked 2d, but it was actually CGI. Then again, the fact we got a 2D animated segment at all was a blessing
But considering the characters from the cartoon world turned into real life characters, I don't get why the crayon wouldn't.
harold and the purple crayon a new live action movie only in theatres this august
Dear fucking freaky Hollywood don't copy shakalaka boom boom 😎😎😎😎
Is it just me, or does this feel like Zachary Levi playing the role of Shazam, who's playing the role of Harold?
Most actor are one dimensional
Same 😂 it even has a winged dragon like creature like the last Shazam movie
SHAZAM!
Yeah, like Will Ferrell is Brennan Huff from Stepbrothers in every role.

Alright, show of hands: who else thought this was some kind of Collegehumor-style shitpost joke when they first heard about it before discovering that no, they really are making a Harold and the Purple Crayon movie?
I always wished there was a dark rendition of Harold and the Purple Crayon. A child who has a tough life but finds joy in a world where he can solve any problem he has with his creativity. I think that could be powerful.

I'm not gonna lie... this should've remained 2D animated. But we'll see how this movie is

That won’t surprise me since I sometimes don’t trust RT

Another Venom situation, it seems.
TBH is gooing to flop
Looks like Harold finally grew up for this movie. Anything drawn by his crayon in three dimensions resembles a blueprint for a new machine's design and a figure's wire frame! I wish that crayon would grant all miracles, luck, wishes and dreams! It could even suit the special effects machines.
I loved reading Harold and the Purple Crayon back in elementary school; fond memories.
I knew Harold would grow up, but I didn't expect him to grow up in the animated world.
He actually grows up before entering the real world. But I assumed he would grow up too.
Or turn into Shazam
So Harold grows up and ends up in the real world. That makes sense.
Yes, Harold physically grows up. But he doesn’t mentally grow up due to his childish, reckless, and impulsive personality.
Seriously, that's the only thing that makes sense? Lol
@@pseudo2522I know right?!? Haha dude thinks growing up is impossible but a purple crayon that makes anything you draw into reality is normal.
*UBASHA*
I see a lot of comments complaining about it? Here are my thoughts. this is NOT your book made live action, the book exists within this world, and somehow the crayon gets out. this is not changing the book, or pretending to be a movie of the book, it just found a way to use the powers of the book.
I think that's the only right way to DO a live action of this. It's not a remake, its something new. Its a tribute to the original book and a new way for kids to enjoy it, and will probably introduce many more people to the original.
A good thing, right?
It's not something new. It's exactly like Disney turning all of their 2d animated movies into crappy action remakes. This is just another lazy and pathetic attempt for some quick cash.
@@Rucnas It's different because it's not just telling the same story like those movies were.
@@christophersfirstyoutubeca8751 Yeah, it's just using the same name, so it could rely on nostalgia as the selling point. Then, make up a really crappy story for a quick cash grab. This one of those movies that you watch on a plane and fall asleep in the middle of it.
@@Rucnas Curse those smart businesses for making movies about popular things. You can't really "remake" a book, or a one-season tv series. You're probably not their target audience anyway, so why raise a fuss?
@@Rucnas op just said this was not a remake. i also dislike live action remakes but the op gave context that this was not a remake but a live action movie based on the book. i think we could say it was something like the live action hook, it's based on peter pan but it was not a live action remake.
Zachary Levi priorly voiced a rooster and Rapunzel's once-thief love. He even played Dave Seville's nephew. Alfred Molina priorly voiced Double Dan and played Otto Octavious and Maxim Horvath.
Alfred Molina's in this??

Probably the closest we'll ever get to a ChalkZone movie.
First thing I thought of the second I saw the title.
Chalk zone was awesome.
Core memory unlocked. Thank you for that.
Oh man memories
As long as The ChalkZone Movie would be a hand drawn animated movie with a PG rating for mild action brief thematic elements and rude humor
As someone who watched Harold & the Purple Crayon as a child this is quite the surprise but I’m all for it 👍🏻
Zachary Levi is probably one of my favorite actors and he can do just about anything well. Can't wait for this movie! ❤
Kids grew up watched Harold and the Purple Crayon cartoon from 1959.
It live action I guess this look good
maybe he grew up ?
There was a Cartoon from 59? I saw one from the 2000s
The book was back in the 1950s the show was made in 2001.
I remember getting the books in chick fil a kids meals when I was a kid lmao
People talking about Zachary Levi, I'm seeing this just for Lil Rel Howery! Loved him in Free Guy, and I expect to love him in this too!
I’m watching for him and Zooey Deschanel
I know of Purple Rain sung by Prince, the purple dress worn by Rapunzel, the purple tang, several cars that are purple, even some grapes are purple, Ariel's queen dress and several prom gowns as well as Black Panther's suit's fabric lines are purple. My mythical character, Megalo Station (Blaire Rastaneo) wears purple and plum; the darkest purple in the world and there's even Queen Emmaline (Hayley Atwell) with every light and dark purple.
Oh my God after 10 years i get to see harold in a screen not just a screen, but a big screen!!!!
When the guy said the crayon was made of "Pure Imagination," I thought, "Oh no, the Wonka-verse!!??"
I just thought of Wonka.

Good old days
Harold and the Purple Crayon was my FAVORITE story when I was a kid (clear back in the late 80s/early 90s). One of the first books I ever read on my own (although my mom had read it to me countless times before I learned to read). I just saw a movie poster for this just before Easter and I freaked out because it never in my wildest imagination thought that this story would be made into a movie. The movie comes out August 2, and then 2 days later on August 4 is my 38th birthday. Best believe I'll be sitting in the audience with my purple crayon and a huge dumb grin on my face. I am SO excited for this.
An Older Harold is something I never expected as an Child but If I grew up he grew up! Can't wait for this.
*UBASHA*
First "IF" and now this. It was about time for movies that look "for kids" went back to theathers instead of ending up being released directly to streaming. Let the magic prevail. 🖍✨️

Ngl, watching this trailer even if I too were to admit this was quite different from the HBO Family cartoon I use to watch when I was a kid has kinda makes me imagine if I was like Harold, I'd use that crayon to draw a giant mech suit, which would be both awesome and metal.
Sorry if that sounded confusing, I was also a Mech enthusiast ever since childhood too😆
Believe in miracles, create and draw and do everything that works very successfully for the world will mean everything to you, nothing complicated, you just need to believe and love yourself that you can.
I am surprised to see that Harold will be an adult in this movie instead of a child.
Like seriously. Who is this movie even for?
@@kairenatus Everyone, I guess.
0:25 to 0:29 . It's shows Harold as a baby starting to draw and the entire page is blank, then it skips and show him as a adult who drew a entire world. It will be explained in the movie.
@@joey3654 Yeah.
@@joey3654 still lame
Okay, this looks better than I thought. I had my hesitations when I heard Harold was going to be an adult but I like it when a film adaptation can work with the source material and make its own story out of it. What would happen in Harold grew up and came to our world with his magic crayon? Thats sounds interesting. Worst case scenario it could just end up feeling like a 2000s style comedy but just based on this trailer...it doesn't look that bad.
I like how the crayon is purple since purple/violet represents vision and creativity😊
Harold grew up.💜
Hold on. I get it now. The baby is the character but he grew up. Okay that makes more sense.

Gotta love how the things he draw turns out into realistic very stock-looking assets instead of cartoony stuff, good things.
Just a little thing i noticed:
That dragon towards the end is probably the bee the kid drew, only having eaten a lot more than just one butterfly. I imagine it's gonna be an ongoing problem for the cast the more it exists, which sounds pretty entertaining imo

WHY DOES THIS LOOK SO GOOD
My first reaction seeing the poster was bad but the trailer was good, it looks interesting.
I was curious from the trailer. I’m not sure I’ll see the movie yet from my impression here
Not everything needs to be remade or come back, originals are beautiful the way they are
Hollywood made a premium version of "Shakalaka Boom Boom"
Getting some serious Buy More vibes from seeing the clip of Zachary Levi working in a fictional big box store.
I think that I will watch it, even if critics don’t like it. The live-action debut of the director of Rio 1 & 2, Ice Age 2 & 3 and Ferdinand and co-director of Ice Age 1 and Robots. Rio 1 & 2 were childhood movies for me. Zachary Levi is for me a great actor even after Shazam 2 became a flop.
Me 2.
I remember watching Harold and The Purple Crayon when I was young and here I am seeing this trailer and it’s bringing back memories
Being a late 80s and 90s kid, seeing this trailer brings back memories. They're going really old school with this nostalgia piece. Gen Z probably have no idea what this is. This could be the earliest concept from my lifetime that is getting a modern treatment. Sonic and Mario have had several iterations before their movies. This, however, the last time I saw this name was in 3rd grade. I have to see it just out of moral obligation.
Levi: “I don’t do a lot of thinking.”
…Makes sense. He said yes to this script.

Ngl the adult cartoon character of Harold literally looks like the man in the yellow hat from Curious George, it reminds me of him so much idk why.
That's what I just thought and I am glad I'm not the only one but I still wonder how they even came up with his design like that still?

I had this book in the hospital with cancer
This is actually so awsome take my money I love it
This was my ABSOLUTE favorite book as a kid and I can't wait to see this with my kids!
Ngl, I kinda thought it would be alot cooler if this was 2D animated since it kinda makes me think about what Harold would look like if he was all grown up, but oh well, maybe giving this movie a watch shouldn't be too hard when I watch it online lol.
Tho' also watching the HBO show of Harold and The Purple Crayon when I was a kid growing up did kinda make me inspire me to make a trio of magic crayon users kinda like Harold but with the same color as one of my favorite trios Huey,Dewey, and Louie as the magic crayons would be Red,Blue, and Green, best part is that I can even probably imagine my magic Red,Blue, and Green crayon user trio drawing Vehicles and Mechs too😆
Rudy got the chalk, chalk, chalk zone.
We need a sequel where Harold says SHAZAM!!! 😈
I haven't heard this old story since 5th grade. Never thought I see this character again

it's like the entire industry has the same 2-3 guys to make their trailers and those guys has the same 2-3 licensed music that they use in parts in EVERY FUCKIN' TRAILER.
I think the fact that people assume this will be bad and pointless will make it surprisingly fantastic.
HATPC was my favorite book as a child. '60's and '70's.
