- In a previous video (link below) we treated 4 oscars with extreme hole in the head disease, 3 of which did not respond to treatment. Further testing was done and we discovered the fish were severely infected with fish TB. In this video we show you the test results and discuss Mycobacteria, know as fish tuberculosis.

You did a great job healing the little guy up for him having mycobacteria!
I hope he goes to a good home & lives a decently long life with minimal suffering (considering his condition) I'd love to see updates on him in the future- I know the seriousness of mycobacteria & how degenerative it can be.
I think you should start doing videos on specific ailments and really go in depth on how they're contracted & how to treat effectively- Getting advice from a reputable veterinarian would be really helpful for some people out there!

You can find the zoonotic ones there on the internet under medical studies and bits. Fish tuberculosis is also catchable 😅 that’s why I never handle always try and wear gloves

Can you do a video covering fish TB in general? How contagious it is, what to do if you suspect one or more of your fish showing symptoms of it, and how to eradicate it from tanks?

Why did these oscars get such severe disease? Live foods ( including tubifex, mosquito larvae and 'feeder fish') are known to transmit mycobacterium? Tubifex carrying mycobacterium have been proven to cause mycobacteriosis in ornamental fish. Did the owner feed these oscars any live foods? Do you recommend the feeding of live foods to aquarium fish?
Please I need help I went to so many forums no one can help me my fish has a curvy spine and sunken face not really sunken belly I have no idea what to do ... someone told me is Tuberculosis and that I’m gonna loose all my fish I have no idea what to treat them with
I don't understand about it being incurable because I see Kanamycin indicated for fish "Tuberculosis". However, I've read that it's Gram Positive, so I don't understand why Kanamycin would be recommended.
Mycobacteria are notoriously difficult to kill because of their thick, waxy, hydrophobic cell wall, and the presence of drug degrading and modifying enzymes. They also evoke an immune response in the host, being encapsulated by thick granulomatous inflammation, which makes it difficult to get drug penetration.
What to do about this disease? Aything to worry about if you have alot of fish?
Id like to hear more from him about this.

Have you ever tried to take the blood sample in EDTA? probably the aspect from red and white cells could be better, some anticoagulants like heparin cause interference to stain.

Olá Marcelo Santos Patricio, tambem adorei o video dele e por passar a experiencia de graça e sem frescura, estamos realmente precisando de alguém assim no BR.
Esclarecendo sua duvida 3 dos 4 não responderam ao tratamento, porem ele não diz que morreram, mais acredito ser o procedimento de fala em modo medicinal quando se perde o paciente.
Ele ainda fala sobre uma outra bactéria incurável que pelo que eu entendi abrangeu os outros 3.

Doctor so it could be infected to human.. does it dangerous ? This kind of disease only infected freshwater fish or could be on saltwater fish ?
And if somehow people eat the infected fish meat what could possible seen on people skin or any symptoms ? Does the disease or bacteria be killed if the fish cooked properly ?

I have a blue gourami, and he was fine until about 2 days ago, when a dark spot appeared on top of his head. it looked like a hole or an injury of some kind, and I thought maybe he ran into something but I have ruled that out. his right abdomen also appears to be a bit swollen, and he has been lethargic and staying near the bottom of the tank, only to swim to the top on occasion, then float back down to the bottom. he seems to open and close his mouth faster than the other fish in my tank. the rest of the fish appear to fine. i'm afraid if I don't find out what is wrong real soon, he won't make it. any help is greatly appreciated. thank you
Did you ID the Mycobacterium species?
I used to look into all my discus problems. I had wild discus in the late 1970s and there was very little to go on. Rember, 1970s didn't have the internet so we would all share our info through discus importers and clubs. The funny thing is, I used a lot of the same meds. Our success rate wasn't as high as yours Doc. But I did have a bad-ass stereo microscope! lol
if fish with tuberculosis have eggs and the eggs separated and hatched in their own tank. does that mean the fry will also have it ?

Dr my oscar laying down from last 2 days not swimming and eating
I suspect my 50 gallon planted tank with guppies has TB as I removed two sick fish (red dots and bloated male). So far all the 3 adult guppies and fries show more symptoms for 1.5 months. How long should I wait to conclude that the tank has no TB? I want to be careful as my hand are always have cut with allergy
Hi Ricky, sorry to hear. First thing is to confirm whether there is fish TB by submitting sick fish for vet lab testing. If there is fish TB, it's difficult to eradicate, short of depopulation, cleaning and disinfecting. Then start anew with species that are not commonly diagnosed with fish TB. Some of my Discus fish have been slowly dying off. They all have slight popeye which spreads to my other fish quickly.They all eat fine and look the picture of health apart from the popeye.Can you pleasetell me if it is likely to be popeye?Thank you very much....Jim

Now I have only one left..Please can u suggest some remedy for me to contain it as I want to add more new ones.. Water is changed periodically and food and fungicide given as required..what else should I do.?? TQ.. WAITING for a reply.
I medicated my fish but they still have those ugly scares. Do they heal by themselves or could I buy a type of medication

My oscar been jumping out the tank, even with 3 inches in the middle. Now he hasnt eaten in awhile, an this am found me upside down barely swimming, an a bend in the body.
What the problem
Sounds like he sustained a broken back from jumping out of his tank and is bent, barely swimming and upside down from exhaustion or exposure to air when out of his tank. actually yesterday I saw my dwarf gourami and he was having a wound and finally I figured it out that he was having fish TB I just separated him but while getting him out I used my right hand which was having a very slight cut and now I am worried that will I acquire TB or not !!?? 🙁

Albino Oscar. Like 2 or three years old.
looks more like a lutino golden-red oscar. Lutino cuz it has black on the fins and not completely red eyes.

someone told me fish with TB should be treated with 1 month of antibiotics.. to administer in the tank water or through foods??
I've not heard of anyone successfully treating fish TB.

I'm concerned after watching a few of these videos. None of them seem thorough. The fish with the dropsy died, most of the Oscars died, and it doesn't seem like this vet is thorough enough before recommending treatments. Fish TB can be passed to humans.
The fish dropsy video he explains the fish is beyond saving, and the purpose of opening it up is to determine the cause to see if it can be prevented from happening to the rest of the pond population, when he opens up the fish he shows the kidneys completely failed and gives advice to the pond owner to prevent reoccurrence. At the 2 minute mark in this video he explains that fish TB can be passed to humans and gives a warning, maybe if you watch it a couple of times it might help you to absorb it all properly?
He gives ample information on why he takes the courses of action that he does.
Dropsy is not a disease, it's a symptom of organ failure. Usually kidney failure or polycystic kidneys (which he covers in the video)
He's literally said that mycobacterium is zoonotic, which means it can be passed to humans IF you happen to have an open wound when you come in contact with the water.
Fish tuberculosis is EXTREMELY contagious & once it enters an aquarium, you have to throw the entire setup out once the fish passes or is euthanized, to avoid passing it on to other fish.This includes all the filters, buckets, the tank, substrate etc. that have EVER came in contact with the water, Because mycobacterium can survive outside of the water.
So this one that only had the early stages is now destined for a life of isolation- as any fish that come in contact with him or his water will contract the mycobacterium.
The fish he put down were suffering from advanced stages of fish TB, which means they would have suffered tremendously & their tissues would only continue to degenerate over time, the kindest option for a fish with advanced TB like that is euthanasia.
When vets take scrapes & samples at the scene or in their practice- they send them off to an offsite lab for testing & analysis, this testing can take days or weeks depending on what they're attempting to find / culture. So it's not a case of Dr. Loh being incompetent, It's a case of sample & pitri dish testing & analysis taking time to determine the cause of the visible symptoms.
I think you've just overlooked the scientific explanations that Dr. Loh gives for his courses of action. As a fishkeeper with over 15 years of experience, I personally think he did the right thing.
Just because you are incapable of understanding something, does not mean he was not thorough enough. There is no scientific 'cure' for mycobacteria for a start, so what would you suggest he do? Make something up and sell it to the owner like a snake oil salesman? The fish with dropsy was basically already dead. Really, if you're gonna be critical, at least pay attention while watching.
