The old son was head of a vastly successful publishing company for a long time, they all had enough money to afford quite a good lifestyle, and even without their inheritance they have the networks, resumes and education to make a living; except possibly the influencer and her daughter.
It's scene's like this that remind me Harlan wasn't 100% a good guy either. I'm sure in his mind he saw it as an excellent "twist" (at this point I'm pretty sure he saw everything like a story he was writing) but never considered the pressure that would put on Marta or how much attention that would draw to her family- which I'm sure would cause a lot of distress to her mother with her being undocumented
It also makes sense that Harlan, despite being "kind," probably though "HA! I'm leaving everything to my nurse! Take that!" was this big gotcha, not seeing Marta as a person like the rest of the family but as some kind of bargaining chip in his slight vendetta against his kids and their spouses.
I'm sure he knew that a slight inconvenience of the family fighting Marta over the will is worth all his assets and could change the life of a worthy person like her. Harlan bitched throughout his scenes about how worthless his children were.
i think its made pretty clear that the reason he left his family out is because they'd all become spoiled off of his success, and he hoped that by doing so he might help them to find their own peace. Giving it to marta specifically was likely because she was the last person he truly saw as a friend. it had nothing to do with him setting up a twist, at least not based on the story thats actually told.
On the good side, now Martha can fix that much easier with her new found money, as she said in the movie. On the other side, Harlan choose to give Martha the money not because she had anything especial, but mostly because he wanted to cut out the money from his family.
It never sat well with me the way the cops let the family swarm her. At this point Harlon's death is looking more and more suspicious. One of them was a murderer and you just let them go after this young woman?
To be fair, the police probably can’t do much without using force which they want to avoid. For starters, the family was just crowding Martha (the one who got the inheritance) and not causing harm, so them holding back the family and giving her time to escape was the best they could do. Second, they probably concluded that it would be better to watch and save their energy in case it does get violent because remember, they are a team of 3 vs a family of 6. Also, the family probably couldn’t/shouldn’t do anything to her because the inheritance all went to her. So if she dies, then all her inheritance probably could go somewhere else. (But I’m not too sure about this).
The cops weren't there for the Will reading, were they? Legit asking, I don't remember and didn't see them in this clip. I think it was just the P.I. and he doesn't have any real authority there.
The same with the "Eat shit!" scene, you can rewatch this scene and focus on an entirely different character each time and each character (even on the background) have their own moments like Jacob Thrombrey being scolded by Walt for using foul language or Walt crashing down the stairs and his wife tending to him. Absolutely brilliant.
Jacob Thrombrey is a little fresh mouth creep, got that from his mother! "You Dirty anchor baby!" I would have slapped that little shits face for speaking to a lady that way and make him apologize!!
The "anchor baby" line spoken by Jacob was an improv from Jaeden Martell - Michael Shannon (Walt) loved it and lobbied Rian Johnson to include it in the final cut.
I love Glass Onion and excited for more but this kind of scene is what I was looking for, the chaotic, funny and satisfying feeling. Even the ending where they look up at Martha is so good compare to the ending of the sequel. Storywise I think both are interesting it was just the chemistry of the Disruptors is lacking while the Thrombeys could literally just sit and talk and I'll be enjoying it so much.
But glass onion excelled in this detachment from each other that all the disruptors had. That's the point, they don't care about each other and have zero reason to even still talk to each other. I think the joy of glass onion comes from Blanc and Helen's interactions- those two I could listen to for hours.
I love how although Ransom knew in advance that he wouldn’t get any shares and it would all go to Marta, he hated the family so much that he STILL went all the way back to the house just to see his family get duped
Knives Out was so well made. Classic example of family feeling like their being swindled out of inheritance even though they don't deserve it. Well done l, Director Rian Johnson, well done👏👏
Damn right they didn't deserve it! Entitled pricks, Leeches, thieves, killers and philanders the whole lot! Marta was the only decent person in Harlan's life. He made the right call!
Despite her outburst, Linda is by far the most likeable in the family. Yes, her dad gave her money to start her company but thats not exactly unordinary for a parent to do. She is really the only one who stayed in touch with her dad and cared for him the most out of her siblings, even though her brother works for him. She's the only one who cried and you can tell they had a good relationship to use nicknames and secret codes as a way of bonding. I get why she was pissed but went too far in the name calling.

1:10 Rolls to family members that desire a specific part of the will. Richard wants the house, Joni wants money, Walt wants the publishing company. Brilliant.
Yeah I kinda figured that too. Btw, Lynda actually wanted the house since she's a real estate mogul. Tbh, I thought Harlan should've given her the house while everything else goes to Marta. That would've been a last, good father-daughter moment.
@Jon John I think had Ransom been written to be close to his mother (and been a "spoiled mommy's boy" ) this would have made sense. If his side of the family was the only one that benefitted, it would be even more believable that he would be willing to help Marta- which would have made the betrayal at the end even more dramatic.
And they all could've gotten it if they'd shown Marta any sort of decency. Walt probably would still be running Blood Like Wine if he hadn't threatened Marta, for instance.
Harlan knew that all his family was just a bunch of hangars-on and leeches who only saw him as a dollar sign and just gave him lip service to that end. Marta, expecting nothing went above and beyond in her service to him, Harlan recognized that she was the only one who cared despite not expecting anything. Pity Marta had to endure such stress. That family is despicable. Never did I expect the true antagonist in this adventure though. Well played.
All of them said she was a part of the family but when the will is announced, they suddenly all gang up on her because she is an outsider. They all treated her like shit to steal back a fortune they lost and she deserves. “Knives out! and beaks bloody” Even their reactions prove it. This shows how Harlan was right to leave everything to a kind, beautiful and hardworking nurse and not to his lazy, racist, sexist and xenophobic family who were living on his money.
When the Thrombey's said she was like family that was more of a courtesy for Harlan's benefit than out of any kindness for Marta. They showed how they truly felt when they didn't allow her to go to Harlan's funeral with the rest of them and said it was put to a vote. They always made a show of being nice to her for Harlan's and the police, but they didn't have too anymore after Harlan died. The most Marta could hope for from them was enough severance pay to last until her next job since Walt said they would to that much. Even Harlan's granddaughter Meg, who before this was Marta's only real friend in the house; later clarified the distinction that just because she was "like" Harlan's family, but they were his family.
Yeah scenes like this to me show that though Ransom is technically the main villain and the one who was plotting on offing Harlan and orchestrated this entire thing... the entire Thrombey family was rotten. Not quite AS bad but not really good people either which Harlan clearly knew thus why he was fine leaving it all to Marta.
One thing that stuck with me is the phrase "any one pf them could jave done it" the entire family was selfish and entitled enough the have killed harlan but ransome was the only one who did because he was the only one who discovered the secret of the will early (and maybe because he was the only one who understood the art of a mystery)

They're all smiles after the first part of the will is read. He's preparing them for bad news, but it's like no one was listening because they were too excited to hear what they got in the inheritance.
Dude I remember seeing a story like this irl. It was a few years ago but there’s a channel that reads Reddit posts and one was about a family *exactly* like this that got “cheated” out of their inheritance. Now I don’t remember all the details, but what I can remember was that there was this guy who was the grandson of a very wealthy dude, and his best friend (the author of the post). The grandfather was a super nice person and the two of them loved hanging out with him and shooting the breeze just for the heck of it several times a week. The rest of the grandfathers kids and grandkids though were absolute 🐩💩, never visiting, being rude, and just generally not giving two f*cks about the guy except for the money he had. Fast forwards to the grandfathers death and will reading, the entire family is there not out of respect for the patriarch, but because they wanna know what their cut is, and we’re even bragging to each other on how fast they were gonna spend it. The one good grandson and his friend were also there out of respect/the grandson invited his friend because again, they loved the old man. Then the will reading comes and it turned out that 2 years before he died, the grandfather changed the will, and to decide how the money would be split up he came up with a point system. For every call he got from someone he gave them like 1 point. For each physical visit he got, the person received like 3 points. As a result of this, the grandson and his friend ended up with like over 1,000 points each (whereas like 3 other family members got 1-3 points total over the entire 2 years he’d been keeping count), with entitled the both of them to like 97% of the grandfathers wealth. To say the family was shocked would be an understatement, and them then accusing the two of them about knowing about this system was of course inevitable. The old guy knew this would happen too, that the family would fight his decision (he even told them how horrible they all turned out to be, especially his two sons who I think he said were like the biggest disappointments in his life for the snooty/rotten way they turned out despite him trying to teach them the right thing), and so he also put in a clause saying that if any family member tried to challenge the will, they would immediately loose all claims to the (very little) shares they actually *did* “earn”.
I remember hearing about that Reddit story. Apparently, the family wasn't aware of that clause against challenging the will. That is, until it was too late to take it back.
One of the best scenes I’ve ever seen in a movie theater. I can’t tell you all the emotions that flooded through my body in this scene, and everything is perfect. The plot twist, the acting, the cinematography, and the beautiful score in the background is the cherry on top.
Honestly, the family is dependent on the old man’s wealth. They present themselves as “good people” but when Marta was left with everything they lost their marbles and went on to accusing her of nonsense. I’m glad Marta inherited everything.
I love that when Ransom's parents learn he was cut out of the will they tell him "this might be the best thing that's ever happened to you" but when they find out *they* were cut out too they flip out. That says everything you need to know about this family.
I wonder... did Harlan leave anything for his mom? You know, the super-old great grandma who actually witnessed both Ransom and Marta climbing down the backside ladder?
Yeah, Harlan surely wasn't thinking of him mother when she had to be pushing close to 100 years of age or even beyond that. Just looked and Harlan was 85 so for her to be under 100 she would have had to have Harlan when she was 14, which does happen sometimes though it shouldn't because 14 year old's aren't ready for children physically and mentally. She was the most decent member of the family though by far so Marta probably let her live there it's a big house and she had little time left.
Absolutely love how the camera work goes from cinematic and smooth to shaky to emphasise just how confusing the whole situation is for Martha. Rian Johnson is a beast!
i love how you can also see the exact moment the person behind the camera picked it up off the tripod (or whatever is holding the camera up i'm not an expert on film) and started moving it to a handheld shot. most other movies would smooth out the imperfections but this one doesn't shy away from keeping the human element
there are so many things i love about this scene that need to be said: 1. i love the handheld shake of the camera as marta leaves the house, trying to flee from the family. 2. marta’s genuine reaction as everything is read out and her little “oh my god.” 3. i love the detective protecting marta immediately the second they started coming towards her, and his standing in the way so they couldn’t get to her right in her face. 4. the smile on ransom’s face because as anyone who has seen the movie will know, he already knew what was going to happen. he was just along for the ride. 4. and ransom’s little - *I THINK THIS IS THE BEST THING THAT COULD TO HAPPEN TO ALL OF YOU.*
I know he’s a piece of shit, but my favourite line in the film is when Ransom drives off and says ‘I think this is the best thing that could happen to all of you!’ with sheer JOY and they don’t get the irony of it 😂😂😂
Some of the muppets!? Miss Piggy, Fizzy Bear, Grover, Sam Eagle, Animal, Bert, Cookie Monster, and Alice Otter. He was Jim Henson's right hand man and there from the beginning.
It’s official. Chris Evans surpassed The Joker in this scene. When he was cut from the will, his greedy, dysfunctional family took sanctimonious pleasure from it. Then, he sat back and watched the said family’s world burn when they found out they were disinherited too. Secretly knowing of his family being excluded from the will, he smiled, chuckled, and laughed victoriously when they showed their true colors after the will was read. Plus, how is it that British actors, like Daniel Craig, could pull off Southern accents so well? They must have the vocal chords of Superman.
4:01 why do I feel like immediately after saying that line Jamie went to rigorously apologize to Ana even though they are acting?😂 You see here in interviews she's so nice and her performance here is so visceral and I love it.
I forgot how good this scene was and while I was watching, I noticed one shot where Marta was directly center of the family indicating the house going to her instead of everyone else
In retrospect, the moment he says he was cut out of the will, that was a big red siren saying he did it. Why else show up at the will reading if you know you're not getting anything?
To see his family get their “just deserts” and cause he needed to get Marta on his side by “rescuing” her. He should have left after he stormed out but he was waiting for her to run, probably did something to her car. So he could swoop in when he knew the family would chase her.

No. It's entitlement, lack of humility, and greed that rips apart families. Poor people squander their money, that's why they don't have it, and that's why they're so desperate to get it. They showed their true colors in this moment, supposedly calling her family and then accuse her of sleeping with Harlan. If they would have been nice to her she would have shared the inheritance, but they all were selfish and egocentric.

@@879SCSPI dont think that. he really loved her as a friend and thought she deserved it. and he probably knew that with the money her family was safe.
On the good side, now Martha can fix that much easier with her new found money, as she said in the movie.

One of my favorite parts of the movie.
the horrible question of "Is it?"
This is the moment that Laurie Strode realized that she fucked up.
This was my most favorite line in the entire movie
Wrong Linda! It was Harlan's house, money and company and now it's marta's!
Good call! 👌
This is the Harlan's house he bought in 80's. His relatives are guests, and that's all. How the house can be theirs ?
Was so disappointed when i saw glass onion, so much worse than knives out imo :(
nah, glass onion was like a chinese version of this one.
Only Knives Out felt like there’s stronger family chemistry in that movie.
But glass onion excelled in this detachment from each other that all the disruptors had. That's the point, they don't care about each other and have zero reason to even still talk to each other. I think the joy of glass onion comes from Blanc and Helen's interactions- those two I could listen to for hours.
Glass onion ending was so bad lol. All the chemistry too and acting in this was a million times better than glass onion

Brilliant.
Never noticed that before, good catch
Yeah I kinda figured that too. Btw, Lynda actually wanted the house since she's a real estate mogul. Tbh, I thought Harlan should've given her the house while everything else goes to Marta. That would've been a last, good father-daughter moment.
@Jon John I think had Ransom been written to be close to his mother (and been a "spoiled mommy's boy" ) this would have made sense. If his side of the family was the only one that benefitted, it would be even more believable that he would be willing to help Marta- which would have made the betrayal at the end even more dramatic.
And lastly to Marta because she only cared about HIM.
And they all could've gotten it if they'd shown Marta any sort of decency. Walt probably would still be running Blood Like Wine if he hadn't threatened Marta, for instance.
The way Ransom sits there just laughing his ass off and having the time of his life has got to be one of the best things I've seen on film 🤣
“Knives out! and beaks bloody”
Even their reactions prove it.

@@rasmus9595 sometimes. An “anchor baby” is a child born in the US to illegal immigrants. Because the baby was born here, under the US Constitution they are American citizens and thus cannot be deported.

See how wealth, money, and greed rips apart families?
No. It's entitlement, lack of humility, and greed that rips apart families. Poor people squander their money, that's why they don't have it, and that's why they're so desperate to get it. Wealthy people have learned how to hold onto and create their money so they're not in a desperate position to be shitty people.
Most people are not rich, so they don't know what rich people are like, so they assume that they're just like them but with money. But the truth is, they aren't them at all, and that's why they have money. Money doesn't make you terrible. People are terrible before they have money. He got them a pie, but they all wanted a different slice.
Not to mention Joni scammed the fuck out of him for hundreds of thousands of dollars, so supposedly the last thing she should want from him is more money
3:42 that face 😍😍😍😂🤣🤣🤣🤣
I wonder why linda was the angriest one. Sure it was a giant finacial loss but she's the only one who still has something of her own, her company started with a small loan of 1 million dollars 😂😂
That was my cousin and uncles reacting when they found out my grandma left everything to me 😂
They accused you of boinking grandma?
@@skyereave9454I didn’t mean to laugh but I did lol
I don't know how did they make it to keep a straight face after the "boinking my father" line
