Scott Brown, I speak for Canada when I say you’re videos are great, you’ve got a good sense of humour and the music you choose is stellar. Keep em’ coming eh! 👍
I'm watching your channel for nearly two years now! What a great person (plus your bros!) You are and great content. It's 18 years since I was last in Auckland, getting old now! Well done. Peace and love from Ireland.
Full bed under your slabs dude..... some slabs will actually bleed through where you have spotted your mortor...so when you look at them they will have slight dark patches on top of the slabs...if you full bed them and that does happen the whole slab colour will change slightly but it won't stand out. And it also stops them cracking through the middle over time. Other than that you have done a lovely neat job 👍
Joshua Simoneaux I think it covered way more than just the corners because there were decent hight on the four spots of slab. And it covers more than you saw at first as well when they pushed them down I would imagine.
Another great video, i was taught how to lay pavers or slabs as we call them in Ireland by a builder friend and he told me to wet the side being layed on the sand and cement should be wet so that the dry slab doesnt draw all of the moisture from the sand and cement mix. This is help with the bonding of the mix and the slab .
Your videos are top notch, one thing that I think would be cool every now and then is seeing the customers reaction to your work (I know 99% of them won’t want to be on camera). Keep it up 👍
Hey lads, greets from Edinburgh! Like someone kindly mentioned you'd be doing yourselves a big big favour by laying on a full bed of semi dry sharp sand. Not only is this the right way of doing it, it's also much cleaner. Plus, semi dry mortar is a doddle to lay your slabs on. Give it a try next time.
A short piece of L bar aluminium makes a great base for consistently levelling pavers. It won't bend or degrade over time, so it lasts forever. Just place a short piece along each gap, so each consecutive paver rests on it (one short piece underneath the pavers at each of the gaps)...level them all first, then lay your pavers. The road base will lock the bar in place, and the pavers won't move. Then lay sand, or the gel-lock sand, and they won't move even if the substrate settles.
If you do gravel/dirt work somewhat regularly, you should get a muck rake. Makes life much easier. And I don't know if it's a US thing, but we always spray water on our crushed rock when we compact it, I think it makes it compact tighter/harder.
Doh! You kept talkin' about the sea-shells all around the slabs/pavers. I've not seen that treatment and was wondering what it would look like! Now I'll never know unless I book a trip to NZ! Lol Seriously though, you do great work so a quick shot of the finished product never hurts...
slacking slabs, if you stack them in a start pattern it gives you corners to pick them up again, 90% of the slab is still flat so no danger of them breaking.
Pistol Knight you can’t pick the no crack/chipped ones when the store delivers, looks to me like that customer is paying for top notch attention to detail!
This is a free loan trailer from the store, my guess is he uses it for the 4hours or so, so that he can get his compactor, wheelbarrow etc to the job site without having to pay for a trailer.
I must have found your chan right around that time because I remember going back to watch all your videos and I think it was only like 10 or so. Keep bringing the good stuff!
1- not necessarily wetting the slab just cleaning any spots of mortar that my have splashed onto them. Once the mortar dries any on top of the pavers will stand out quiet a lot 2- yes should always lay on full mud bed not just corners to help spread load and eliminate any weak spots. However as the pavers is knocked down the mortar may spread underneath to even out the bed a bit
Idk if you can do this but I am curious about the cheapest tool kits you guy have available in new Zealand. Just like deals and brands. I know your a professional and thos may not be the most useful tools. In the USA we got a lot of genetic or store tool brands. (Deals you find in store cus support your local business.)
Voids are created with those cow patties of sand and cement that are laid down. Which invites erosion. I hate erosion. Almost as much as I hate cow patties.
Mate love the videos . Quick question is that a hardwood deck ? I'm building a deck soon and not sure if to go with treated pine or hardwood . I live in tropical climate. Any advice I'd appreciate
I know that feeling, back to the project where it all began...now you have over 65k subs and it's well deserved mate. You're inspiring, keep up the quality content and craftsmanship. That said - dot and dab with concrete slabs? Well...I'll let other commentators rant about it. 😉
Great Video as usual, slightly off topic but if you think a concrete pouring channel could be not even slightly interesting watch Odell Complete Concrete channel on youtube, worth a look if your into building stuff, keep them coming Scott...Perth, Australia...

hello Scott I am writing from London, I love all of your videos, just I would like to suggest that the best way to lay slabs is to back butter first and than layer full with sharp sand and cement, and also use a tile hammer mallet.

Cheers PJ! Say hi to Canada for me 🙂
True, full bed. But the spots are quite big and floated out by pushing down. Good job anyhow! Result is good!
Yeah that's the way I looked at it but I'll go with a full bed from now on
65.9k subscribers. Now you are at 237k. Like all the videos! Still working my way “backwards” to also see all the old ones

Cheers man, I took that on board for the remaining slabs
Damn thats the first thing i thought when he put down the first piece i see that cracking in 1 to 5 years cuz he only has the corners supported
Joshua Simoneaux I think it covered way more than just the corners because there were decent hight on the four spots of slab. And it covers more than you saw at first as well when they pushed them down I would imagine.
in the U.K i always put a full bed down because cracks can appear over time, avoid the voids
Hey Scott could you do a video on a few little things like your favourite nails and or screws, tools bits used and things like that.
Very late reply but “project farm” channel covers all types of videos like these that you may like to see
How many did you lay in 1 day
Get a life man

Aah. Back to where I started bingewatching from the start 6 days ago.
Where is the final video of his project? I'd like to see. But i can't find it. And btw you make great videos
how do you bid something like this? Time and Materials? Thank you, you are so inspirational.

That plate compactor is the business, makes a job so tidy. You’re so right about pavers from Bunnings, you have to check them all.
On the bright side, if you're willing to accept some defects, the staff will usually give a good discount just for asking.
That was Bunnings Mount Roskill, my local. Seems a fair hike from Highland Park? Anyway, best channel from NZ by far. Keep it up bro
Power Point bunnings is good for refunds haven't had a hassle yet
67.8 thousand subs now buddy . Good job u came long way u will be at 100k in no time
Thanks for the support bro!

slacking slabs, if you stack them in a start pattern it gives you corners to pick them up again, 90% of the slab is still flat so no danger of them breaking.
Please tell me what Tape measure you use. Is it in millimeters?
Get the materials delivered!! how many trips? (thats not really a trailer is it)

So smoko is like smoke break or lunch break ? But y’all done smoke during it or u do smoke up just off camera ?
If you Think that is heavy. You should try 600x600x80 pavers in 300 m2
Why do you wet the slab after you lay it btw? I'd just like to know as i'm not a builder.
@Gaf Dpo Ow ok, thanks, that makes sense. I was wondering because they looked pretty good.
I must have found your chan right around that time because I remember going back to watch all your videos and I think it was only like 10 or so. Keep bringing the good stuff!
2 questions
¹ why wet the slab after laying it?
² wouldnt laying the mortar on the corners only make the center more susceptible to breaking?
1. to stop any spilled wet cement from setting on the laid paver...
2. He put some in the middle too
1- not necessarily wetting the slab just cleaning any spots of mortar that my have splashed onto them. Once the mortar dries any on top of the pavers will stand out quiet a lot
2- yes should always lay on full mud bed not just corners to help spread load and eliminate any weak spots. However as the pavers is knocked down the mortar may spread underneath to even out the bed a bit
Hmmmm - driving in Auckland is always more pleasant when you can just hit the fast forward button on the dash. Oh, wait a minute......

Its the t shirt that matches the van again 😁
What was first? Bought the van similar to the shirt? ;-)
Oh man what a good tune.
just for future jobs , it is better practice to lay the slabs on a full bed of sand and cement and not dot and dab/spot lay!
Second this! Prone to cracking if you dot and dab!
Was just about to add the same, full bed is better and not much more work involved.
taters isgreaters very weak and makes breakages easier
Voids are created with those cow patties of sand and cement that are laid down. Which invites erosion. I hate erosion. Almost as much as I hate cow patties.
Your ever tried breaking a council slab that's dot and dabbed like he has. It isn't going to crack under normal use put it that way
Mate love the videos . Quick question is that a hardwood deck ? I'm building a deck soon and not sure if to go with treated pine or hardwood . I live in tropical climate. Any advice I'd appreciate
Depends on your budget. If you can afford hardwood, then go with that. Treated pine will work, but it's softer so it's more prone to damage.
I agree, hardwood is the way to go if you can pay for it
Good work SBC& Paerau 😎
Fence and gate still looks mint

why not pour the concrete?

If you are ever back in the UK (Derbyshire), bring Pareau and you can try out one of our loft conversions. I reckon you could do it
Rich Dove do you watch skill builder? They talk a lot about loft conversions , maybe it's a uk thing
Why wet down the pavers?
you might get mud on them while installing and once it sets up, there's no way getting it off, it's no bathroom tiles.
Awesome bro
So place makers is like Home Depot ?
Place makers is building supplies for trades people, Bunnings, Mitre 10 is like home depot.
