You don't "have" to create a lather, and that's why I prefaced the video with the following comment "I'm not here to bash or single out any one company but we need to be aware that there are products on the market that may not deliver what traditional which shavers have come to expect... can you shave with these creams? Yes indeed, absolutely". The question was never about whether you can shave with these products or their slickness or comfort. Not all products make huge "Foam"! Many are created to produce "low foam", meaning they have a high moisture content that sticks to the face; thus increasing razor glide. Most of the ones you reviewed explain that on the package... Just a penny for a thought..
I’m new to your channel- brilliant subject. My no lather soap- GBS puck. It came in a kit and it lathered like hotel soap. Not today, anytime soon. I tend to go with softer puck or tube soap .

Hi con I have been wet shaving for a few months now and I'm glad I made the switch. One of the first soap I brought was off eBay Australia called Doug murrays bay rum. It is easy easy to lather and is extremely slick. Worthy of a look imo. Good to see an Aussie wet shaver doing awesome reviews. Thanks 😄
Great video. I have found that to be true with some shaving products. While disappointed with the lack of lather I can still get a good shave. Many of the products are nicer to use while traveling do to easy to carry or to transfer into another travel container. A 5oz shave soap takes up alot of room in a toiletry bag.
So the most important is to find stearate or stearic acid high on ingredients list. Also potassium & Sodium Hydroxide. I made a quick view to my soaps. Razorock, Proraso, Cella, Haslinger, have these ingredients very high, especially stearic acid. And I can confirm that all of them make excellent and rich lather. Well Done Con! You are the best! I practiced several times over the Labor Day weekend. I still haven't got that baby butt smooth shave yet. I just got a tub of soap called Tcheon Fung Sing (TFS) Sera. It has a gorgeous lady on the lid :) I haven’t tried it yet so I checked the ingredients and the first one is Stearic Acid, then aqua, cocos hucifera oil, Potassium Hydroxide, Sodium Hydroxide, parfum etc. It is made in Italy despite the oriental sounding name at the begining. Should be good for a lathering. It smells lovely! I know non, or low lathering soaps, still do the job, but a thick, meringue-like lather feels luxurious on the skin. That’s why I think most guys prefer thick lather.
I've been trying to lather a shave gel I thought that I don't know the method to get a rich lather but now I know thanks for the info and I also bought 3 different brushes just to try to get a lather
Glycerin based soaps lather great, they're slick and cushiony. Infact, one I use is the vander hagen. I melt down 2 or 3 pucks of the amber colored soap in a microwave for a few seconds in a cup. Works great!
Many years ago there was a Williams Brushless Golden Shave Cream. It did a great job on my heavy beard. I used it in the field in the Army. A brush and lather is more fun, but when shaving out of a stream or steel helmet or pressed for time there is a place for these products.
My Best Experience is in my opinion for wet shaving. Is for a perfect clean shave the best shaving creams are Taylor's of old bond street Geo F trumper or the Excutive shaving company there my favourite top shaving creams. Better than what you would get in a store or chemist. Best wishes Robert.
Have been using a safety razor for a few years and shaving for about 45. It is not all about the lather. I like a soap or cream that puts slickness on my face. A lot of a great shave is how you hold your razor. You want to glide your razor on your face. Let the razor do the work. Wet face with a lot of slickness and a good sharp blade is what I recommend. I like Tabac soap, with a closed/open comb razor. (Fendrihan). Good brush I have many and perfur Omega brush. Use an Alum Block and a nice aftershave like Fine Snakebite.
I've used Cremo Creme and have really good results...especially when I need to rush it through...but don't try it with a brush . That would be a waste of time. It's simply not designed to be lathered too much. Arko , on the other hand is the best I've used for both lather and protection. Really nice production. Enjoy all your vids.

I have tried all three of those creams, and unless I'm wrong, I didn't think those are meant to lather at all. In fact, I was surprised at how much lather you actually got out of the Dermalogica. My understanding is that they are meant to be applied in a thin layer with fingers, and not to be used with a brush. If I'm wrong, then they are pretty poor performers alright, but I don't think they are meant to work like a Trumper, etc...
You unfortunately could have included hard soaps such as GFT and T&H, both of which I made the mistake of purchasing when I was new to wet shaving. Now DR Harris thats a different story, in my opinion they are the only one left of the big traditional British shaving houses that have soaps worth buying.

Alas the big soap corporations seem to be developing a new class of shave soap "Latherless" to go along with 6 or 7 blade junk plastic razors. I tried over 50 some different creams and oils, foam free creams etc, but can say that I get the best shave from a can of barbasol. that just works best for me. I hear all the reasons why its supposed to be junk and not good but for me that is what works best.

Nivia is a great cheap shave cream. I like it . But now I am using Nightbridge shave cream made in England. Wow . It is great. OK it costs $20 but will last me a 6 mouths . D R Harris is very nice but costs around $30 here in Toronto.
I have a few non-lathering creams (mainy from gifts and samples) and they do provide good slick protection for a quick shave. Just have to re-apply more cream between passes and can be a little gunky in the razor and take more water to clean off. That said, I will avoid buying them in the future.

I have been testing differant soaps and one that lathers best for me is the Italian Cella that contains coco oil - tallow - sterinsyra - kaliumhydroxid - natriumhydroxid - kaliumkarbonat - mandel oil - perfume and water. I don´t know if Sterin, Kalium and Natrium are the same as you mentioned.
I bought a brush recently, never used one before, and I was trying to do a lather and I couldn't... I'm surprised to find that there are creams that actually don't allow you to lather up, like, seriously?...
I can make a lather with Tide or Dawn or Persil, People don't need lather, they need a product that works. All you need is protection, don't settle for the "lather".
Aside from a probable excess of chemicals, these creams appear to be more designed to apply directly to the face, and are not mean to be used with a shaving brush.

Absolutely awful....You mentioned how the big companies dont seem to care about the views of the wetshaving community and I have to agree. The customer service at Trumpers was awful and disrespectful to say the least. they go on the NO BUY list.
Hello Scott, I made the mistake of buying two GEO Soaps… I bought them at a retail shop and paid more than anyone would want to pay for a couple of soaps. With that said, I can’t afford to let things go to waste, so I am using these soaps by loading my brush with soap, then adding some of The Real Shave Co. cream (which I’m not overly impressed with either) and to that I add several drops of glycerin and mix well… WOW, you mix that all together and you end up with luxury shave lather. (Lemons to Lemonade) I wrote to another Shaver and told him, “If those two products got together and made a baby, I would have to adopt that child and raise it for my own”. Just thought to throw that into the mix, so to speak :) A good day starts with a great shave. Have a great shave Scott! -John

Another great vid Con (& I'm sure I'll get panned for saying so but I think you've got superb taste in whiskey)... Going to make a pain of myself though - oleic acid actually comprises a larger proportion of beef tallow than stearic does (accounts for about 43% where stearic's about 17%). Oleic's not necessarily a sign that a product will be a miserable, sloppy disappointment. Stearic's definitely prominent in the best products I've used, but technically it's not necessarily going to make a perfect lather. The Neutrogena Cream is not made to be lathered, but it is fine if you just use it like any regular shave cream !

There are some shave shop or creams that are not meant to lather some even gels to.

LUSH have got into the shave soap business with "Dirty" and another one - no lather there too!!!
A shave cream that doesn't lather is like a beer without the head..just my thoughts..Thank you for the lowdown, STM..
it happened to me recently . i bought dove shaving cream and this cream is not making any leather 😂😂

Going to make a pain of myself though - oleic acid actually comprises a larger proportion of beef tallow than stearic does (accounts for about 43% where stearic's about 17%).
Oleic's not necessarily a sign that a product will be a miserable, sloppy disappointment. Stearic's definitely prominent in the best products I've used, but technically it's not necessarily going to make a perfect lather.

Making shaving soap/cream is a bit like buddhism - all about striking a harmonious balance between your fatty acids. You need fatty acids that contribute both stable and fluffy lather for a serious shaving cream.
...and sadly, it's often hard to tell from the ingredient list!

These are creams not meant to be lathered. Just apply to your face. Haha.
You now that, and I know that, but too many people get caught thinking these products will lather using a shave brush etc..

You unfortunately could have included hard soaps such as GFT and T&H, both of which I made the mistake of purchasing when I was new to wet shaving. Now DR Harris thats a different story, in my opinion they are the only one left of the big traditional British shaving houses that have soaps worth buying.
Sadly many larger companies are heading this way 1morepassWill. It's very disappointing that they do not consider views of the wet shaving community. I really wished they stopped fooling around with their formulations.
