Ahead of the third Forum for India-Pacific Islands Cooperation (FIPIC) summit, Fiji Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has made a public apology for his role in the 1987 military coup that overthrew the elected government of Prime Minister Timoci Bavadra.
फिजी के प्रधानमंत्री सितिवेनी राबुका ने दशकों पुरानी घटना के लिए भारतीय समुदाय से माफी मांगी है. फ़िजी के प्रधानमंत्री सितिवेनी राबुका ने कहा है कि 1987 में उन्होंने भारतीय मूल के लोगों के ख़िलाफ़ जो तख़्तापलट किया था, वो सही नहीं था.

This man, PM Rabuka has been less than honest most of his life. His 'mistakes', some may even call genocide of descendants of girmityas has uprooted entire families and communities from their places of birth, where they had lived with the local community for upto 4 to 5 generations peacfully. His actions, including his governments racist policies started a process of ethinic cleaning which hasn't stopped to this day. Some may have forgiven him, but some will probably never, however others see his forever changing chameleonuring as political maneuvering to get votes form the very people whose lives he once destroyed, as they have become kingmakers now.
I say the above with utmost sincerity and responsibility as I am a descendant of the girmityas, a Hindu, and a proud Fijian of Indian origin.
Thank you for providing the opportunity to comment on something very important to me and for the Indo Fijian community as a whole who contributed significantly to the development of Fiji to make it a shining star of the Pacific, however many still feel alienated in the country of their birth, but are hopeful that the process of reconciliation and reversal of rascist policies may very well have started. I do hope you do your research properly, for i live in Fiji Islands. And china is already in a strong position in Fiji. Lots of infrastructure developments are done by chinese administration. So if india needs to strengthen its position it will need to match China in all sectors.
