    If there was a worldwide best kit lens ever, this lens would win in a no contest knockout. This lens is simply a must. I know there there is the 32 to 64 constant aperture F4. But seriously, that is four times the price of this lens, and that lens is not four times better than this lens, I've only owned my 50 S Mark two for about two weeks and I've taken a heap of photos already with this beautiful lens and I've got another lens coming but wow it's blowing me away and I actually really like the focal length as well. It's simply wonderful piece of glass that you must own.

      I can totally not agree it’s way worse than the performance of my canon R8 combined with the 24-105 mm f4 lens. The R8 is a 1200 Euro camera and the gfx 100 s II 5500 Euro. I just don’t get it…maybe I got a bad copy but that’s weird. Did you have another camera before to have a comparison on full frame?

      @@nevvanclarke9225 I agree cause the canon files are way better than least with that gf 35-70 mm lens attached. I don’t think that you know much about the new sensors of the canon… btw I was hoping to get excellent images with the Fuji it just didn’t happen

      @@captaincook6283 can you maybe back that up with sample images? I mean the GFX is twice the resolution. Is the lens so bad that the image-quality is worse than with the canon setup?

    Seems like the 35-70 does a good job of resolving detail on the high resolution 44x33mm sensors to make it useful for stopped-down landscape use. Portraits are better served by the 45-100, or better yet one of the 80/1.7 or 110/2 primes. This lens will pair well with either of those primes and a wide angle - the 23/4, or the upcoming 20-35/4 - for a comprehensive medium format kit.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  2 года назад

      The 110 has been my favorite for portraits thus far, and my review of it comes Friday.

  • @ryanchambers7378
    @ryanchambers7378 2 года назад +13

    My experience is that it’s not a “kit lens” but a very sharp “pro” zoom lens with limited zoom and max aperture. If you are willing to pump up the ISO, it is super capable.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  2 года назад +6

      Fair enough, though a kit lens doesn't necessarily have to be a pejorative. The 24-105mm F4 lenses on full frame are often sold in kit but are pro grade zooms.

  • @stevechan5569
    @stevechan5569 2 года назад +3

    Another great insight of the GFX, this time with the “kit” lens applied to the 50S II. I really enjoyed seeing the landscape pictures with deep fresh snow and really cold temperature which remind me the years I went to school in Winnipeg over 40 years ago. Well, your reviews and mostly great complements on the subject camera and lens keep flipping mind mind back and forth if I should go for it? I am still debating if I should go for the 50S II with the kit lens or the 50mm f3.5 prime or just simply pass the great Fujifilm Canada promotion on the subject equipment? Have a great day.

    I'm guessing this was shot on the GFX50. The GFX100S has phase detection auto focus with over 400 points. I see that was mentioned in the video, but despite it being a "kit" lens with the 50 series, not sure so much of the video should have been spent on the autofocus of the camera when this is a lens review. (I am buying this for a GFX100S) - I appreciate the chapterization though so I can find what I need. Thanks

    • @DustinAbbottTWI

      The autofocus comments are relevant, because there’s a lot of variation in focus performance from lens to lens whether you are using the GFX50S or 100S.

    I appreciate your videos, cheers. I just picked up the GFX 50R for a steal, body only, so now I got to get some glass for it. This lens seems like a good pick up for its general flexibility and reasonable price. Would you still say this is a good value unbundled from the body (ie. ~ $1300 CAD)?

      Very well for the money, but if you are willing to carry the extra weight and pay a little extra, the additional reach and f4 constant aperture as well as the aperture ring are definitely worth it. Also close-up performance wide open is more consistent with the 32-64. as a Gateway drug or „small“ walk around lens, the 35-70 is hard to beat in the kit for 500$. However, if you are looking for very creamy backgrounds, look elsewhere. 😅

    Thank you. This lens needs good light and think of it as an F8 lens and use accordingly. The high resolution of the camera body is not otherwise exploited. But still, never seen a Fuji lens that is not very usable. It's a Fuji lens!

    pretty much not understanding you, you talk about the focus issues with the GFX50 that camera as focus issues with whatever lens is on it, and that the lens was made for that camera, and you also mention that it would work better on the 100 and the 100S, because its offered as a kit lens with the 50 but works better on the 100 and 100S , don't make that camera shortcoming and issue of the lens, I have the 35-70 and the 32-64 and for the cost part the 35-70 is the lens I use 90% of the time if that focal lent is what I need.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI

      I can only comment on what I see, and I mentioned the slightly better AF system in the 100/100S bodies in hope that the autofocus would perform a bit better.

    Looks like a lens perfect for landscapes. "F/8 and be there" is usually my mantra anyways, haha. Most of my scenic work is shot around f/8-f/11, so I'd have no problems with this Kit glass. Wish they offered it discounted with the GFX 100S though.

      I just two weeks of landscape photography with this lens on my 50r and had it glued at f/8 most of the time. Images are tack sharp corner to corner. There is nothing "kit" about this lens.

      @@yukonpeter Good to hear, they just put rebates on it in the US, so it's a done deal. So much smaller, lighter, and less expensive than the 45-100mm, and has a wider end too. All I need is F/8-F16. Seems like the perfect hiking landscape lens. I'm sure it'll work for group/family shots too.

      @@Clint_the_Audio-Photo_Guy Wow, $500 off! This lens replaces the 35mm equivalent of carrying fixed primes of 28mm, 35mm and 50mm. My 50r + 35-70 weighs in at 2.7 lbs, so not light, but reasonable for a long day hike or backpacking trip. Sometimes I throw in

    I just got the lens and did some pictures on the gfx 100 s II and I’m very disappointed. Inside a room on a sunny day I can’t take pictures with less than iso 1600 cause the max shutter without blurring is around 1/15 and my canon R8 without any ibis does the exact same framing with iso 100 paired with the rf 24-105 mm at the same equivalent focal length AND the pictures on the canon are so much sharper at the same f stop…! I’m very disappointed…

      I'm not sure comparing a 24MP camera with a 100MP camera is fair unless you downsample the 100MP to the 24MP standard. You might be surprised by what you find then.

      Coming from a Fuji GA645 medium format, this AF is a dream on medium format. If you need the phase/fast tracking, go get a Sony A9.
      Reason it's not on the 50 is that it's an older sensor.
