I was stationed at Travis AFB in the mid 80's and I remember seeing Mt Diablo off to the south . One time I rode my motorcycle to the summit one time and just loved the place - it's a beautiful spot . I remember seeing the towers of , I think , the Bay Bridge sticking up thru the fog looking thru one of the telescopes there . Fond memories - I should put a return trip on my bucket list . Nice video .
I grew up in the shadow of Mt Diablo (Pleasanton) in the 1950s to the 1970s. It’s changed a lot since I was there. My Grandparents lived in Danville across the road from a beautiful horse pasture of rolling hills. It’s so populated and changed now that I wouldn’t recognize anything.
Dianna ... it's always so sad to hear stuff like that ... but I do know what you're talking about . Btw , do you know why they call it Mount Diablo ? ... do you know of any eerie stories connected with it ... anything supernatural ?
@@gardensofthegods yes, we also called it Mount Diablo. I remember talking about the name…I heard the Indians named it that. Great video! I live just a few miles from the summit in Concord. Yes I have done a hike all the way to the top just once from Clayton and I’ve been to North Peak a couple of times, the trail gets very steep just before North Peak. Be sure to take plenty of water it does get hot. I was on a search and rescue team and they use Mt Diablo for training and yes there is poison oak up there along with ticks! So beware. Another nice park next door is Morgan Territory.
I grew up in Antioch. My parents always told me it was a dormant volcano, but then I learned in my college geology class, it was actually the result of clashing tectonic plates pushing the land up in that area. Fascinating
Very helpful, Josh. I followed most of your recommendations though I chickened out on Sentinel Rock because the elevation spooked me. However, the Mary Bowerman Trail was great and so was the Fuji melt at Danville Brewing. Thanks for all your efforts…Ed

Amazingly, when I moved from Berkeley to the Motherlode 12 years ago the road to the Mt. Diablo summit was very closely guarded...but now we can see the mountain very clearly from the top of CA HIGHWAY 49 @ MARTELL, CA!✌
Hey Josh I notice you’re always in NorCal but haven’t had a video on Alamere falls its Californias only other waterfall that leads to the ocean besides Mcway. It’s about 40 Ft waterfall with a beautiful hike through pines and with costal views all the way through . You should definitely do it soon .
I've seen Lassen Peak from the summit of Mount Diablo when I was there in 2018. Shasta would be visible if not for the curvature of the earth... however I saw a post somewhere on the internet (I forgot where) that you would be able to see Mount Shasta from Mount Diablo if Mount Diablo was 5,700 feet tall. I think you can see Shasta on a clear day from Mount Saint Helena up in Napa and Sonoma County. Great video as always. I did a video driving down the summit with a photo review at the end of the video showing the pictures I took at the summit (including the view of Lassen Peak).
You can see a bit of Shasta on the clearest of days when the conditions for refraction are just right. Views can be extended when the light bends when the conditions are right for atmospheric recraction.
I grew up with My Diablo as a view from my backyard! If you’re ever in the area again you need to check out China Camp State Park in Marin County and Mt Tam👍🏼
It's definitely worth doing the hike up, if you stop by again. If you park at the Mitchell Canyon parking area (on the North side of the park), you can do a loop hike that hits the summit, as well as 3 other peaks in the park.
That lunch looked great, but my good side says you just killed all the calories from the hikes. Sorry...but I love the informative message. I hope to be up there this weekend. Great video. 😂

Yes, hiking to the summit is more rewarding than driving, but I enjoyed going up other trails more than the ubiquitous summit trail. The CC dudes rocked! I had snow on summit this spring and could see Sierra snow!
I'm new to this subscription and I love your videos but up here in Chico north of Sacramento we have a really cool park called Bidwell park you might want to Google it because it's well worth the trip especially during the fall and on a weekend it's a city own park so try making a trip to Chico if you have the time.

Just curious, Have you been able to knock out all the state parks yet? If you haven’t I’m sure you’re close haha I like how they carved the steps into Sentinel Rock. Crazy how far you could potentially see from the summit on a clear day.
Did anything eerie or supernatural happen there ? The reason I ask is because almost always always when a place has a name with the word devil in it it usually is a place that has been known to have weird or supernatural events going way back to the indigenous people with legends of it .
The best way to see it is to hike from the north gate and go to the summit. There's no substitution for hiking to it. Ohlone and Miwok Indians thought Diablo is the center of the world, where creation happened from. It's thus a spiritually deep hike if you have any knowledge of the cultures that lived there for thousands of years.
Do this on a weekday if you can. I learned my lesson a couple of years ago and I doubt it’s improved. The road to the summit is steep, curvy and often narrow. In a normal situation it would not be a problem at the posted speed limit, but I went up on a weekend and there were a lot of cyclists. I saw no sign of a special event so I believe this was probably normal. I was not concerned about the delay behind the ones headed up the hill, but the cyclists coming down the hill at break neck speed was unpleasant. They would take up the full lane and come close to the center line on the curves. Coming down the hill they would tailgate you and I was driving at least the speed limit. I pulled over several times to let cyclists go by.

It's a little funny how we think our graffiti is so tasteless and makes us mad to see... but if the Indians left graffiti a few hundred years ago, we think its a priceless artifact. Graffiti is graffiti regardless of who left it. We should make up our minds how we feel about it.

Intention makes a difference. The Indians were doing this in the context of performing religious ceremonies. Not equivalent.
