Let's just pause for a moment and reflect on just how incredible this music is. Verdi walks a tightrope. Everything pared to its essence. What a genius. Now, this voice is fantastic. Absolutely love it
This is tremendous!! I have never heard of this soprano before but she is absolutely wonderful.Such drama, such powerful depth of emotion, such total immersion in the psychology of the character.Wow! I will certainly keep my ears open for Miss hong!
Yes, thank you for stating this. I whole heartedly agree. I do enjoy Hong a lot, have heard her quite a few times live at the Met. She is superb. One thing people often remarked about her career has been how difficult it is to record her true vocal color and make her into a recording artist. However as a live performer, there's just something so incredibly beautiful about her voice, musicianship, and performance as whole. She released several albums later with Jennifer Larmore
Hei-Kyung is fabulous & film-star_quality gorgeous. And like her compatriots from S.Korea (e.g. Sumi Jo, Kim Eun-Kyong etc) her Italian is authentic - the S.Koreans show the rest of the world how it's done. BTW, interestingly, the conductor is Elina Garanca's husband Karel Mark Chichon
Are you native Italian? Personally, I was in awe of her perfect, colloquial, pronunciation and clarion diction. True, it's different from most non native opera singers. That's because it's way better.
Indispensable artist of our times. Was happy to hear and see her Violetta rather than Dessay's when Natalie called in sick one Saturday afternoon not that long ago...
btw... I am studying vocal performance. Maria Callas was known for her superb acting abilities and interpreting music... That is wat made her voice more greater. The visualness that carries out the voice. Hong Hei-Kyung was taught at Juiliard since the teens. She is greater than Sumi Jo and was taught all of Maria Callas teachings because Callas was a teacher their for years before her death.
Wow. It's true what they say. People really do have more bravado in cyberspace. I only came around to Opera two years ago and I'm learning day-by-day. With encouragement like yours, I'm sure I'll rise beyond the shoebox level and move into the rude, elitist, super-snob ranks that you so humbly occupy.
Hello :D I would like to know something....how should i put this......how can it be that you are a vocal performance major and you say things like "sumi jo is not that good" O_o? that girl was forced to practice her vocal skills since she was 10 for like 8 hours a day! by the time she was 19 she was a COMPLETE soprano and pianist and then went to study at the Santa Lucia! and millions and millions of experts keep on saying that her technics are so far the most flawless in the history of music!
Hei-Kyung Hong sang a fiery and gutsy Musetta in Boheme at La Scala in '03 opposite Alvarez, Servile and Gallardo-Domas; her performance there pales--so to speak--in comparison to her flawlessly doomed Violetta.
I was talking to those who were putting hong hei-kyung down so much.. and those are comments down there... and of course i know they are two totally different voices..
Hong Hei Kyung is also older than sumi jo and isn't going around showing off her voice like sumi jo does.. only elite opera goers know here and she is more well known in America than in korea. She is very well known in NYC.. She is also considered one of the first soprano to be on the Opera News magazine.. If you see her credits and her studies.. I don't think anyone can talk badly of her.. because she was taught from the best..
@rubberduckie5 I like what you say but I wonder what you think of this: opera as a collaborative art. If you agree that opera is a collaborative art then how could you say that she is completely, and by that I assume you mean solely, responsible for her own performance?
OMG! SHE IS AMAZING! Her diction is def. better than sumi jo.. I am a vocal performance major so I would know. Her voice is soo rich and sounds soo pleasant. her legatos are phenomanal.. AH! I LOVER HER VOICE! sumi jo is not that good of a coloratura. if you want to see a good coloratura... watch Edita Gruberova.. Good day everyone.. =D
i just didn't like the way she reads the letter of Alfredo's father, even her native tounge is not italian ,the sopranos ususly learn these foreighn languages, cause it sounds not nice otherwise. I like very much the riding of the letter from Anna Netrebko. She sounds so natural, like an Italian.
Ridiculous, are you a Korean? Why are you comparing with Hong and Jo together? Their repertoire is quite different. Hong and Jo, both are excellent sopranos. They cannot be evaluated by your funny nonsense opinion. Even if you are talking about diction, Hong's diction cannot be perfect as well as Jo's since their native tongue is not Italian or whatever.
Is it just me or does she seem visibly disappointed with her performance. Look at the expression on her face just after she finishes the last note. I thought she did OK.
A medium class interpretation, I find no real dramatism. Sustains too long some notes to show off the capacity supposingly she has, almost no p or pp. Bad recitative may be due to her mother language.
Am I the only one who can actually hear how wrong this is. Her technic is bad, the voice sound is in her nose. This is probably the worst Violetta i've ever seen.

She has been indespensable to the Met for 25 years, for her purity of tone and beauty. This is wonderful!
Christopher Lucier you damn right
So Beautiful!
Absolutely wonderful!

The best!!!!👍
This is exceptional singing! beautiful tone and legato.
M b t❤❤❤っp😊
I am in Awe of her voice - wow!
What a beautiful voice!!!
I have also heard her sing in German, French....her diction is admirable considering she is Korean.
PERFECT
Beautifully done.
She's unbelievable!
Bravo

Not really Robert Valence. Listen to Sutherland in this if you want to hear how it should be sung. Hong isn't bad, just not great!
Sutherland! Listen to Anna Moffo instead.
himsingz no listen to callas
Nor great???? Really???? :D :D :D
Great voice. Yes, she has a pretty strong accent, but the voice is gorgeous.
Are you native Italian? Personally, I was in awe of her perfect, colloquial, pronunciation and clarion diction.
True, it's different from most non native opera singers. That's because it's way better.
BRAVO!!!
Brava!!!!!

I'm no expert when it comes to opera but I'd challenge anyone to find a more perfect rendition of that song. I'm not joking, find it for me!!!
and absolute blinder of a performance!
btw... I am studying vocal performance.

Perhaps she is just still in the emotion...very nice interpretation, I don't see why she should be disappointed... :)
I was talking to those who were putting hong hei-kyung down so much..
and those are comments down there...
and of course i know they are two totally different voices..
Is she still alive?
Yes

the final is pp
2:30
It seemed like the conductor rushed her at "Della Traviata." She might have lost her concentration after that.
Beautiful !!!! Thank you very much.

I LOVER HER VOICE! sumi jo is not that good of a coloratura.

Ignore Andante peter he is this boorish everywhere on RUclips.
Loupé!
too strongly sung. listen to Anna Moffo to understand how this should be rendered.
A medium class interpretation, I find no real dramatism. Sustains too long some notes to show off the capacity supposingly she has, almost no p or pp. Bad recitative may be due to her mother language.
Sorry but the Italian is ridicolous, horrible !
Good passion, good voice but I don't know what you're saying !
Am I the only one who can actually hear how wrong this is. Her technic is bad, the voice sound is in her nose. This is probably the worst Violetta i've ever seen.
This is wrong and you should feel bad for being this wrong.
Ridiculous, are you a Korean?
