The DCU Constantly Shifting Tones Is GOOD or BAD?

  • Today is one the topics I am most intrigued about when it comes to the DCU. James Gunn’s and Peter Safran’s plan for the DCU is to have something for everyone. Meaning some projects will be light hearted comedies, others will extremely dark and serious movies and others will be somewhere in the middle. But is that a good or bad thing? Now I ask this because I really think there are great arguments for both sides. And today we will go through the pros and cons of this decision to hopefully come to a conclusion by the end of it. But before we get into this discussion, let me know your initial thoughts on this decision in the comments below. I want to see if by the end of the video, your opinion has changed.

Not that difficult for a good writer/director. People in real life have different personalities. It’s not that hard to imagine someone like Batman meshing with Superman or Flash. JLU did it masterfully and seamlessly.

Shifting tones from movies to movies will most likely be beneficial. We tend to forget that Barbie and Oppenheimer released on same day and still managed to make a billion. One being r rated and other being a family comedy. So the audience is very large and they aren't really looking for the things that worked in 2010s anymore. Audiences have changed and they are going for varying tones in recent times. So to make movies in different tones that serves the characters best is best decision. It all depends on execution. If they make a bad r rated movie it wouldn't matter or vice versa. Just make good movies and Market them well

It’s hard but even in comics when DC comics had a mega saga every issue was building a little into the main plot… but you didn’t have to read everything, in the main issues the important details were mentioned so everything could be understood, but for more in depth info you were teased to read the other issues for expanded stories that led to the main epic battle.
You can find movies were important past events are mentioned, events that could very well be its own movie: Miyagui talks about his time in the army during World war 2, In the unforgettables we hear the backstory of the protagonist being saved when he met his wife… DCU/superhero sagas could be like that, if you don’t watch some movies it doesn’t take away of enjoying the current movie.

There is the cautionary tale of dipping in the well too much. Comic book movies are on the decline, I think we all know that, much like how their popularity fizzled out in the late 80's and early 90's as the target audience grew into adulthood. James Gunn, a very good director and writer, though whose talent and vision has never met up to that promise for he continues to build off of the work of others. He lacks originality, recreating Farscape through Guardians of the Galaxy, and I fear he is channeling Smallville for this new Superman movie.

  • @KMJoshiMusic

It will probably work out. You make great points for both sides, but I feel like the tone shifts won't be that drastic. I share your opinion about James Gunn's humor, but I think you'll agree that he's not a bad creative. He writes good stories, knows how tones work, and seems open to collaborating rather than ruling the franchise. If what I believe proves to be accurate, I'm sure his team will figure out a way to keep everything connected and make sense.
The animated movies have done that well. Man of Tomorrow was quite light and funny, but The Long Halloween was very serious. And yet their team-up is enjoyable.

  • @omaridaniels8427
    @omaridaniels8427 3 месяца назад +2

Phase 1 of the MCU was a good example of shifting tones- all different characters and sure, the movies had humor, but the amount depended on the character. Tony Stark was light-hearted despite his decision to become Iron Man and the risks involved, whereas The Incredible Hulk was fairly serious throughout, and Thor was a fish out of water when he came to Earth. I'm not always a fan of Gunn's writing, so my hope is the DCU truly does have variety, in particular James Mangold's Swamp Thing film.

I don't think it's about tone black adam was mostly a serious movie. I think Zack Synder just doesn't have a good visual style. Not just in these movies, but all his movies. He doesn't have a good use of color or lighting. Relies heavily on gimmicks like high resolution cinematic filters. It's subtle but that's what people reject. Something about his movies feel off. He's just not on the level of other directors. He's not quite hollywood movie material. He doesn't get offers for movies anymore for that reason. He doesn't deliver like others do. He's not quite at the skill level of a hollywood block buster.

No worries from me regarding this game plan although if you ask me that’s pretty much exactly what we’ve gotten from the DC movie universe over the past 20 years. Some dark some light some in between. The difference is that it wasn’t planned and just happened as a result of having zero planning. On the note of the humor side of things. I enjoy humor being in the superhero genre but agree that with shows like Peacemaker it went too far. It was just too too much. I was once told that cursing/swearing makes you sound unintelligent and although I don’t completely agree with the comment I do feel that cursing and swearing over and over does make you sound unintelligent. Overuse of vulgar comedy gets to be too much as well. Not everyone understands it all and I become uncomfortable for those people.

I think the tone needs to be the same to a degree. People can BE funny in a dark movie. But you can’t have people act like they’re not living in a different world between each movies.
For example bystanders in Superman 2 acting campy is funny but not how people in the real world act. For that to work in a series of movies I think it needs to be the same.

  • @cjkalandek996

If each movie has a different tone depending on the story, that'd be fine. It'd keep the movies from being too repetitive (Looking at you, MCU).
But if the tone constantly shifts within just one of the movies, THAT'S a problem! Because I hate it when a movie is inconsistent in its tone, because it gives the implication that the writer and/or director of the story has no idea who the story is meant for (Looking at you, MCU, first Raimi _Spider-Man_ movie, and 2017 _Power Rangers_ reboot movie).

At the start of video: i think the best thing is to have different tones based on the character and story.
*and this is what the mcu has and is doing. They have projects that are more serious such as winter soldier, the Falcon and the winter soldier, civil war, thor the dark world, etc. And thrn they have more clear lighthearted things like ms. Marvel, spider-man homecoming, thor love and thunder, she-hulk, etc. And they also have others that are a mix of both like the guardians movies, avengers, the iron man films, etc.)
Yea im still with my same opinion.
Also while some may disagree (and i dont wish to have any arguments please) i think the mcu is a clear example of doing multiple different tones and styles as i have given examples with. And it works. Personally i think with the DCEU it was that they went hard with the more serious tone (which is fine) but they committed to that. Then like halfway through they changed it to be all more lighthearted (again fine) but i think that sort of sudden pivot was jarring to some and made the audience feel like there wasnt a plan and instead it was just the studio reacting.
Its fine to make changes to your universe to make it better. We can see with the MCU (though ive really been loving the current saga myself and ik others have been too) they are making tweaks and improvements BUT heres the kicker its happening a little ahead so it feels more like a smooth transition rather than sudden pivot.
    Thats just my take.
Again please i dont want to start any arguments i just want to have fun and talk about all our favorite characters and stories

Creating a "Batman Brave and the Bold" when you have a highly successful and masterpiece in Matt Reeves "The Batman" really makes little sense.
Gunn coming in and wiping out the good with the bad, is a bad decision. And leads me to believe they aren't learning from their mistakes.

I can guarantee you there won't be a single "serious" or "dark" movie in Gunns DCU. The closest they will get is gore like TSS. Other than that i only see this universe filled with nothing but cheap humor

I'm sorry. But you saying the MCU was targeted towards people who wanted funny Superhero films is so false. Perhaps it is now, but at it's peak that definitely was not the case. And to call the DCEU grounded instead of what it really was. That right there shows your bias.

The irony in you saying I’m bias through you being biased yourself is very funny

So me describing how I saw the early DCEU, is biased? Okay mate, thanks for pointing out what an opinion is.

Of course his bias. Synder films are not good but he will praise it regardless

Who says Snyder's films are not good? The critics? Well they were the once who said Captain Marvel and She-hulk were great. Does that sound reliable to you? Plus, je never said that Snyders films were the greatest DC films or anything. He said he liked them and he has a right to say so. You people are just mindless Snydr haters.
