  • In this video, you’ll see lots of rare, never before seen footage of operations at the B&O railroad museum.
The goal for today is to move B&O 5300, a 4-6-2 class P-7 “Pacific” steam locomotive built by Baldwin in 1927. The move will take the 94 year old locomotive from the North Car Shop where it was on display to the restoration shops to be cosmetically restored.
This video took place on 8/28/21.
If you’d like to donate to the B&O Railroad Museum, you can do so here:

A comment from England, this is not a criticism but I am surprised how few steam locos have been preserved in working order in the US compared with here in the UK. You have some fabulous engines that deserve exhibiting in working order. Regards to all from Nottingham England

Some Locs are too large to operate and make money for their museums. Without a heavy loss, no need for a heavy slow 4-8-2 mountain loco or a 4-10-2 or a 3 cylinder 4-12-2 or any 3 cylinder loco to operate. or a high stepping pacific, or atlantic that can go 90-100Mph

I think the big difference is the nationalized rail network you had for so many years after WW2 gave you a chance to have steam run far and wide. Here every railroad is it's own little fiefdom and doesn't want equipment from a museum operating on it's rail without a hefty insurance policy and big bucks to provide protection power and pilot crew. To fix this nation we really need to start with getting rid of lawsuits over every little thing.

Correct comment from England; compare the situation existing in Europe. There are quite a lot of steam locomotives in the Neverlands, Germany, less in France, Poland and even Chech. What about funding a tourist trains all around the world pulled by different locomotives, across the countries. Those train can run profitable in Europa, Asia, Africa, and the USA?

I think one of the biggest problems is that aside from the insurance claims and all that jazz is that we have tons of speed restrictions and the rails aren't as strong as they used to be so taking these behemoths out for a Scotsman like run wouldn't go very well

Awesome video... When I was a kid my parents took my sister's and I to the Smithsonian Museum, and we spent the entire day seeing some of the most amazing things. I'm 64 years old to this day I always remember the large whale hanging from the ceiling in one room and this steam locomotive it was green and black and it was massive just remember the wheels being taller than my father and it was just amazing, and I still remember it to this day. One of these days I want to get back there and go back to the Smithsonian to see that locomotive, I hope it's still there. I still have to Lionel train sets one my parents bought the first Christmas after they got married and I have a second Lionel train set that they bought when I was a baby my first Christmas. I have all the tracks and the buildings and even all the little people that in those days you hand painted them I even still have the little round pallet of colors they came with the set, and they still run. The only thing I need to get her some new Transformers to run them, as you know they control the speed and Supply the electricity to the tracks.

So many safety concerns here with close clearance (walking between equipment and obstructions and in between moving equipment) running to make a tie or throw a switch and not to mention the number of times multiple people are giving hand signals to one engineer! Like a bunch of monkeys screwing a football at times.
Someone needs to hold a safety class! And yes I have worked on the railroad. Three or them in various capacities including T&E.
That being said the equipment while tired looking is running and it’s a great variation in the collection. Thanks for the video.

Unfortunately the Washington will not run anytime soon. The cost to rehabilitate and or restore the locomotive would be estimated around the 2-10 million dollar price range.
Just look at how long and the cost to get the 4014 up and running. I don't think the museum has those kind of deep pockets to get the Washington to run.
Wether the museum has the equipment for a major overhaul and rebuild is another matter along with personel that know how to to the work correctly. Often heavy rebuilds require a steam locomotive engine to be moved to a location that can do that kind of work. Getting it right in restoration is first.
The last thing is having to redo something over because it was not done right in the first place.
I would like to see the President Washington fire up and run but unless some real big bucks are put out it's only going to be a cosmetic restoration. Steam engines are not cheap to restore. They are time and money projects. Who ever has the cash let check be cast.

Remember that when the railroads retired steam locomotives they were pretty much religated to two fates, scrap or a museum.
The locomotives once turned over to a museum we're not maintained for the most part due what forced steam locomotives out, that was expense. No one thought of a retired steam locomotive to be restored to operate so long after retirement. But this has been going on as a resurgence for steam locomotive has been taking place lately.
As to restore the C&O Streamliner that's great but where do you operate it. As far as I know Union Pacific is the only class one railroad that has been open to operating mainline steam consistently, well yes NS but no where like UP.
The B&O only has a mile and half of track to run on so any of the big steam locomotives would never be able to run at track speed. Seems that's a waste of money to bring a large engine to life only to have it not be able to strut it's stuff as it was intended to.
As much as I want to see these grand old ladies returned to operate there's no place for them to run and show there true colors out on the mainline.

@@mid-atlanticrrandairplanes6512 I would say CSX but they are getting less steam friendly. I mean, maybe they could work something out with UP, doubt it though. Maybe BNSF would let them?

    • @mid-atlanticrrandairplanes6512
      @mid-atlanticrrandairplanes6512 2 года назад +3

It boils down to the big L word for the most part, Liability. That's the big thing that has to be overcome.
Second is making room on the mainline for steam excursions. UP is a different company vs everybody else. The best place is going to be say a tourist railroad with the capability to operate a large steam locomotive.
Example is Iowa Interstate they have two Chinese 2-10-2 Steam locomotives in thier fleet, now you just something like that closer to Maryland.
