    The Russian Embassy protested and wanted to Boycott all trade with Sweden for a while .....so no, it wasnt especially popular. Russia even made a parodi song about Sweden......not especially sofisticated though :-) Musicvice... this was WAY better than La Voix , the song Sweden sent to Eurovision! But Tingeling was the song from Meloidifestivalen that everyone remembers from that year. And bear in mind .This wasnt really a song that was supposed to irriteate Russia...This is just typical Swedish humour ...and we do these jokes internally as well.

    It was a side act, not competing. Perhaps it should have been...

  • @olsa76
    @olsa76 3 месяца назад +20

    The background story is that Georgia tried to send a Russia-critical song to Eurovision. It was not allowed to compete, because the competition does not allow politics, but Swedish comedians thought it was funny to do their own "competition performance" about Russia, even though it was only a middle act. Russia did not see the humor.

    I'm surprised no one has mentioned that Tingeling is the Swedish name of Tinkerbell from Peter Pan 😂

    In melodifestivalen there is allways intermissions while the votes are counted. Often they are comedic like Tingeling. Russia didn`t see the comedy in this and the parliament got a letter from the Russian embassy where they complained about Russian stereotypes etc.

    As others pointed out this was the intermission act of the "Mello" final.
    It was Grotesco's take on what the intermission would look like in ESC a few months later, and they got extremely close!

    Sweden and Russia had been in plenty of wars for the last 800 years. The Russians are still pissed because they lost a lot of them when Sweden was a big empire. Even though they won the last one and took the whole of Finland, they have never really forgotten that Sweden kept them landlocked in the west for 300 years.

    To compete you are allowed 6 people onstage, so there were too many people. The song is aloso too long to be in the competition. This was the interval act and the russian embassy didnt like it and wanted to be banned because it was making fun of the russian maffia.
    I love this song, its on my playlist.

    Yeah nah. The Russian didn’t have a great sense of humor unfortunately. At least not officially.
    This comedy isn’t really mocking Russia, but rather the media picture of Russia as it was back then. Today, the focus is off course a little different.

    I dont think it would be seen as ok to send a parody-song like this about another country to Eurovision😊 So like others have responded it was a middle-act. This number upset the Russian regime quite a lot (and no they are not known for seing the humour in comedy like this☺️). And today with an even more aggresive Russia it wouldnt be possible to do a comedy act of this kind for several reasons.
    .
    You asked about our history with Russia and there’s been several wars between our countries (Sweden and Russia) from the 1400’s up until the begining of the 1800s. (11 wars to be precise). And the Soviet Union was of course seen as a major threat during the 1900’s. When they attacked Finland in 1939 we sent weapons to Finland and some swedes volunteered as soldiers on the Finnish side. Both Sweden and Finland joined NATO after Russias attack on Ukraine in 2022.

    Russia and Sweden has had problematic relations since Peter the Great in the early 1700, He eliminated the Swedish Empire. Some 100 years later Russia "stole" Finland from Sweden and actually invaded Sweden. After that Russa and later the Soviet Union has been THE threat to Swedish national safety. Even during WWII Soviet was seen as a greater threat than Germany for a long time. During the cold war with constant uboats and airplanes from Soviet going into Swedish waters and air space. One uboat acually got stranded deep into Sweedish waters, close to a military base r (Called Whiskey on the Rocks). Swedish military was built to fight ONE enemy - guess who.

    • @Merecir
      @Merecir 3 месяца назад +2

      The "problematic relations" go way further back than that. The first war with Russia took place in 1475, but Sweden fought plenty against the Russian precursor state Novgorod, all the way back in 1142. And the fact that Swedish Vikings took Kiev and established the Kievan Rus state has always been hard for the Russians to accept.

    This drives a stereotypical image of insecure, conflict-fearing, naïve Swedes and hard, uncompromising Russians. As a Swede, you thought it was insanely funny, but the Russians took it badly and it became a bit of a scandal here in Sweden. As a Swede, you cannot understand how you can be offended by this. We joke hard with our neighboring countries, and they joke about us. It's like sibling love.
